1. The document describes an experiment to determine the acceleration due to gravity (g) using a simple pendulum. Measurements of the period of a pendulum swinging through small arcs were taken for different pendulum lengths. 2. A graph of the period squared versus length was plotted, and the slope of the line gave the value of g as 10.8 m/s2, which is about a 9.6% difference from the accepted value of 9.81 m/s2. 3. The uncertainty in g was calculated to be 0.1 m/s2 based on the uncertainties in period and length measurements.

INTRODUCTION:

The simple pendulum is a favorite introductory exercise because Galileo's experiments on

pendulums in the early 1600s are usually regarded as the beginning of experimental physics.
where g is the acceleration of gravity. This expression for T becomes exact in the limit of zero
amplitude motion and is less and less accurate as the amplitude of the motion becomes larger.
From this expression, we can use measurements of T and L to compute g. Many things in nature
wiggle in a periodic fashion. One such example is a simple pendulum. If we suspend a mass at
the end of a piece of string, we have a simple pendulum. Here, the to and from motion represents
a periodic motion used in times past to control the motion of grandfather and cuckoo clocks.
Such oscillatory motion is called simple harmonic motion. It was Galileo who first observed that
the time a pendulum takes to swing back and forth through small distances depends only on the
length of the pendulum. The time of this motion, called the period, does not depend on the mass
of the pendulum or on the size of the arc through which it swings. Another factor involved in the
period of motion is, the acceleration due to gravity(g),which on the earth is 9.8 m/s2. It follows
then that a long pendulum has a greater period than a shorter pendulum. Near the surface of
planet, all objects experience the same acceleration due to the force of gravity. This constant
acceleration due to gravity appears in the relationship of the period of a simple pendulum to its
length. Therefore, by measuring the period of a simple pendulum as a function of its length, the
acceleration due to gravity may be determined.

OBJECTIVE
1. To determine the acceleration due to gravity, g, by means of a simple pendulum.

APPARATUS
Stop watch Meter rule Pendulum bob
String Retort stand Clamp

1
PROCEDURE:
1. A small metal annulus was suspended by a thin thread from a support which allowed
them length of the thread to be varied.
2. The length, L of the pendulum was measured from the point where the cotton emerged
from the cork to the center of the bob and was adjusted by drawing the cotton through
cork.
3. The free end was secured on the clamp and the pendulum was given a small
displacement, L.
4. The time of 20 completed swings that was measured against a fixed mark on the bench
was taken and the periodic time (T) was obtained. The reading must be rejected if the
swings become elliptical.
5. The data was recorded in a table.
6. The step 1,2, 3 and 4 was repeated.
7. The T 2 for each length was calculated.
8. A graph of T 2 versus L on graph paper was plotted.

RESULTS / DATA
Length (m) Time for 20 oscillations (s) Period T (s) T 2( s ¿¿ 2) ¿
t1 t2 t3 Average
0.6 31.84 31.94 32.03 31.94 1.60 2.56
0.5 29.47 29.81 29.68 29.65 1.48 2.19
0.4 26.66 26.81 26.63 26.70 1.33 1.77
0.3 24.19 23.53 23.79 23.84 1.19 1.42

DISCUSSION
With a slight change, the forms to enhance the quality of learning for the pendulum bob
are replaced. First, adjust the frequency of a large pendulum's oscillation. Only in a vertical
plane, the basic pendulum oscillates. Other than that, switching off the fan to reduce air
resistance so it won't affect the pendulum bob's oscillation. Simple pendulum length is directly
proportional to the oscillation period square. T^2 is directly proportional to l, the line graph
passing through the origin.

CALCULATIONS
Give all the answers in SI unit.

1. Determine the gradient (slope) of the graph and calculate the value g.

2.5−1.4 4 π2
m= 0.6−0.3 g= m

=3.67 =10.8m/s 2
2. Calculate the percent difference between the value of g calculated in part (1) above
(gexperiment) and the standard value of gstandard = 9.81 m/s2 by using the following equation:

percent difference = ¿ x 100%

¿ 10.8−9.81∨ ¿ ¿
Percent difference = 10.8+ 9.81
2
x 100%

=9.6%

3.Calculate value of uncertainties of g (∆g)

2 22 2
4π 4( )
g= m
= 7 =10.8
3.67

0.1 0.001
∆g= ( 10.8 + 9.81 )(10.8)

=0.1m/ s2

CONCLUSION
Acceleration due to gravity by means of simple pendulum, g = 9.8 ms-2.
