The Origin and Evolution of Cities
This article briefly explain how cities had evolved over a period of time. It say that it is
easy to define the urban area and rural area with respect of number of population.
But this idea had changed over a period of time and now each city had a different
standard were they define a city. Initially it says, it was easy to define a urban and
rural area because before cities were bounded by the city wall and each city had
some or the other political power which define the city, with this they attain the
political power like ability of taxes raises, provide services and many more.
Describing about History of urbanisation it says that after agriculture was introduced
in 12000 years ago people migrated from one place to another with their farming
skills. Cities in ancient times were mostly made on formation of states, and as early
state is they would be having the centralized political hierarchy with three level of
admiration. During the period of 7000bc and 5000bc s called formative years and
during this period southwest Asia was urbanised, during the end of the period there
were merchants, administrations, soldiers, farmer’s artisans and slave. With the
development of cities there were need to control all the resources, with this political
power came into picture. With this priests and officials they stared to reside in
substantial buildings while normal citizens still reside in the mud walls this
discrimination led to many problems of diseases, garbage’s, waste disposals etc.
ancient cities of southwest Asia had expanded and flourish in many ways which
resulted into development of that cities like Greek to Europe. With the development
cities were arranged in rectangular grid pattern. The notion of open market found
expression in roman city forum, the focus of public life. the roman expanded Greek,
the collapse of roman empire was accompanied by disintegration of its transport
system and decay of many cities. People started invading the cities which resulted
in environmental determination through expansion of farmlands, pastures, open
northern waters for fishing and allowing several cities like Paris, Amsterdam, Lisbon,
and Venice to revive. But during the period of little ice ae many European cities
were dried up, slum ridden, unsanitary and depressing.
Classification of cities
The cities were broadly classified in four categories (1) folk preliterate (2) feudal (3)
preindustrial (4) urban industrial. So during the feudal times European cities were
town, their houses were modest, streets were unpaved, while in preindustrial cities
there were consolidation of political power and expansion of states resulted in
growth of cities. In urban industrial age the high rise building of financial and
commercial took over the dominant position in the urban cores.
