Who started it?
The Socratic method of case study
is a form of argumentative but
cooperative dialogue between
individuals based on asking and
answering questions to:
• stimulate critical thinking
• draw out ideas and underlying
assumptions

Where was it popularized as a teaching method?
•Law School (1870) - use of cases pled before courts
•Business School (1920) - 1st applied in marketing
•Medical School (1985) - basic science to practical
problems

What is a case study?
•Reflects real-life situations that present a dilemma, opportunity, decision point, or
uncertain outcome
•Based on historical events and information
•Describes events, people, and factors that influence decisions
•Written with specific objectives in mind
•Not intended to ‘prove’ that a situation was handled well or poorly
•Emphasis is on decision making

Why use it?
Using the case study method, instructors cultivate a safe,
educational environment where students experience all of the
miscommunication, time constraints, biases, information gaps,
and interpersonal conflicts common to real life while putting
theory to work.
