1. 4th Edition of India-USA Joint Air Force Exercise Cope India-18 conducted at Kalaikunda and Panagarh Air Force bases in West Bengal.
2. Inaugural edition of Africa-India Joint Field Training Exercise (AFINDEX-19) between Indian Army and 16 African nations conducted in
Pune (Maharashtra). AFINDEX-19 aims to train the participating contingents in Humanitarian Mine Assistance (HMA) and Peace Keeping
Operations (PKO) under United Nations Charter through practical and comprehensive discussions and tactical exercises.
3. 10th Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) held in Kochi (Kerela), to discuss maritime issues pertaining to cooperative capacity-
building to deal with common security concerns in region. The theme for this year’s seminar was “IONS as Catalyst for SAGAR’. SAGAR
stands for ‘Security and Growth for All in Region.
4. 10th edition of Russia and India Joint Navy Exercise INDRA NAVY 2018 conducted off Visakhapatnam coast.
5. 11 Days Joint India Russia Army Exercise Indra 2018 began at Babina Field Firing Ranges in Uttar Pradesh.
6. 25th edition of SIMBEX (Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise) held in Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal.
7. 2nd India-Indonesia coordinated patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) Joint Naval Exercise held in Belawan (Indonesia). Ships and aircraft from
both countries undertook patrolling on respective sides of 236 nautical miles long International Maritime Boundary Line.
8. 2nd edition of India-Myanmar bilateral army exercise IMBEX 2018-19 begun at Chandimandir Military Station (Haryana). Objectives of
IMBEX 2018-19 are to Train Myanmar delegation for participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations under UN flag.
9. 2nd joint logistics node of tri-services become operational at naval base in Mumbai (Maharashtra) to enhance interoperability, improve
maintenance of military assets and provide logistical support to all the defence services. In 2018, first joint logistics node (JLN) was set up
at Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
10. 33rd edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) began at Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), to be held
till 04 Apr 2019.
11. 3rd Exercise Al Nagah III, bilateral joint exercise between India and Oman held at Jabel Al Akhdar Mountains in Oman.

16. About Rafale Fighter Jets Deal -
India in September 2016 signed an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) with France to procure 36 Rafale fighter jets
(Manufactured by Dassault Aviation), for €7.8 billion. Under the deal, it was decided that India will pay 15 per cent in advance.
Earlier deal -
In June 2001, Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved procurement of 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft. In
January 2012, IAF announced Rafale as preferred bidder and contract negotiations began.
It was proposed that 18 Rafales would be supplied to the IAF by 2015, while remaining 108 would be manufactured by
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India under transfer of technology agreements.
Deal stalled due to a lack of agreement on various terms of RFP compliance and cost-related issues.
Current Controversy is that India’s main opposition party raised an issue over Dassault partnering with Anil Ambani's Reliance
Defence, a private company instead of state-owned HAL. However, Both French government and Dassault stated that it was
Dassault's decision to choose Reliance Defence instead of HAL.
17. Armies of India and Myanmar conducted a "coordinated operation" named Operation Sunrise, against insurgents in Myanmarese
territory to avert a possible threat to the Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project. Indian Army did not cross border during the
operation.
Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project is being viewed as India's gateway to the Southeast Asia. India entered into a
framework agreement with Myanmar in April 2008 to facilitate implementation of the project. Phe project will help connect
Mizoram with the Sittwe Port in Rakhine State of Myanmar.
18. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor, as India's 2nd Defence Industrial Corridor.
It will link leading military manufacturing units in five cities of South India, including Chennai, Hosur, Coimbatore, Salem and
Tiruchirappalli. Investments worth around Rs 3,038 crore were announced for this defence corridor during its inauguration itself
First Defence Industrial Corridor was launched at Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh) in August 2018.
Also, Nashik in Maharashtra will be site of the country’s second defence innovation hub after Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.
19. Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful Anti-Satellite (ASAT) missile test “Mission Shakti”
from the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island (earlier, Wheeler island) in Odisha, taking 3 minutes.
This is India’s first successful Anti-Satellite (ASAT) missile test.
Target was hit by the DRDO developed Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Interceptor Missile, in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in a “Hit to
Kill” mode at a height of 300 km from earth’s surface. A Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is an Earth-centered orbit with an altitude of 2,000
km or less
A-SAT capability has so far only been been demonstrated by 4 countries - United States, Russia, China and India.
Mission Shakti does not violate 1967 Outer Space Treaty of which India is a signatory. The treaty prohibits only weapons of mass
destruction in outer space, not ordinary weapons.
20. Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) test fired PINAKA guided WEAPON rocket system from Pokhran range in
Rajasthan.
DRDO ALSO successfully test-fired indigenously designed and developed Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM), a
third-generation anti-tank guided missile (ATGM), developed by DRDO in association with VEM Technologies Ltd.
21. Fast patrol vessels of Indian Coast guard, Amrit Kaur and Kamla Devi (named after freedom fighters) have been launched.
22. First Indian Army Mountaineering Expedition to Mt Makalu (8485m) has been flagged off. It is located in Mahalangur Himalayas, on the
border between Nepal and Tibet (China).
23. First batch of 4 Boeing (US) heavy-lift Chinook Helicopters, CH-47F (I) inducted in Indian Air Force (IAF), to boost airlift capabilities of
IAF and work along with Russian machines Mi-17 and Mi-26 helicopters. Remaining 11 Chinook helicopters are expected to be delivered by
2023. These helicopters have airlift capability of 10 tonnes.
24. First batch of 4 Chinook military helicopters manufactured by USA based Boeing arrived at Mundra port in Gujarat, for induction into
Indian Air Force. Chinook Helicopters are multi-role, vertical-lift platform, which is used for transporting troops, artillery, equipment and
fuel.
India had placed a mega contract to Boeing for the procurement of 22 Apache helicopters and 15 Chinooks for Indian Air Force in
September 2015.
25. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited became first Indian Shipyard to make and deliver 100 warships, which it has delivered
to Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and Mauritius Coast Guard. Its 100th Warship is a Landing Craft Utility, L-56, made for Indian Navy.
26. Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) signed contract with Ministry of Defence for construction of 02 Project 1135.6 Advanced Missile Frigates for
Indian Navy. The ships would be equipped to operate in littoral and blue waters; both as a single unit and as consorts of a naval task force.
27. Government reconstituted Security Policy Group (SPG) to assist National Security Council (NSC) in Nation's security Operations. SPG
will be 16-member body chaired by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.
28. ICGS Varuna (Indigenously-designed training vessel built by Reliance Naval and Engineering Limited) launched for service in Indian
Coast Guard.
29. INS Khanderi, second of the 6 Scorpene Class Submarines, will be inducted into Indian Navy by May 2019.

14, 2018. Indian contingent will be represented by 6/1 GORKHA RIFLES while Japanese contingent will be represented by 32 Infantry
Regiment.
37. India and Russia signed a USD 500 million deal for construction of two Talvar-class missile frigates in Goa for Indian Navy. MOU was
signed between defence PSU Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) and Russia's state-run defence major Rosoboron.
38. India and Russia signed agreement for leasing of a nuclear-powered attack submarine for Indian Navy for 10 years, at cost of 3 Billion
USD. Russia will deliver Akula class submarine, to be known as Chakra III, to Indian Navy by 2025. Chakra III weighing around 8,140-ton
will have submerged speed of 30 knots and an operating depth of 530 meters and will be capable of carrying a crew of 73.
India earlier leased christened INS Chakra which is first Russian nuclear powered submarine in 1988 under a 3 year lease. 2nd lease
was INS Chakra in 2012 for 10 years.
39. India and US Army Joint Exercise named Vajra Prahar 2018 began at Mahajan Field Firing Range (MFFR) in Bikaner (Rajasthan).
40. India and US agreed to elevate their bilateral ‘Cope India’ air exercise to trilateral format by including Japan. Next edition of this exercise
is scheduled to be held in December 2018. The three countries already are conducting trilateral naval war games under expanded Malabar
naval exercise.
41. India signed $950 million contract with Russia for two upgraded Krivak III-class stealth frigates. The 4,000-ton Krivak III vessels will
also accommodate two multirole helicopters and will be used for anti-submarine and airborne early warning missions.
42. India's Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) concluded Mainamati Maitree Joint Exercise 2019.
43. Indian Africa Field Training Exercise (IAFTX)-2019 will be conducted at Aundh Military Station and College of Military Engineering,
(Pune) in March 2019. It will be conducted with over 12 African countries.
44. Indian Air Force (IAF) concluded exercise codenamed CROSS BOW 18 at Suryalanka in Andhra Pradesh.
45. Indian Air Force held Vayu Shakti 2019 exercise at Pokhran in Rajasthan, showcasing its firepower capability.
46. Indian Air Force struck several Terror Camps in Pakistan, striking multiple militant camps in Balakot, Chakothi and Muzaffarabad,
operated by Pakistan Based Terror Organizations Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen. Over 350 militants were
killed in Airstrike. Its first Indian Airstrike in Pakistan since 1971.
Concerned airstrike is Indian Response to Pulwama (J & K) Terror attackon Feb 14, 2019, by Jaish-E-Mohammad, in which 40 CRPF
Jawans were martyred.
This terror attack triggered huge uproar in India and across gloabe. Indian Govermment decided to punish the accused and Airstrikes
were done to eliminate any upcoming threats to India. Huge number of Terrorists were eliminated in strikes.
12 Mirage 2000 Fighter Jets were used by Indian Air Force to execute the strikes. This Indian Move against terror has been widely
appreciated by major economies including USA, Israel and Russia.
Apart from Strikes, several other developments were followed after Pulwama attack -
India announced that it would fully utilise its share of unused water from rivers Ravi, Beas and Sutlej that has been flowing into
Pakistan.
Under Indus Water Treaty 1960, waters of the western rivers - Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab, was given to Pakistan and the
Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers were allotted to India. India's share of water from Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers came to 33
million acres feet (MAF). While about 95 % of water was being used in Indian after construction of 3 main dams, close to
5 % water or 1.6 MAF would flow to Pakistan. To gain access to this water, India is now building more dams which will be
completed in six years.
Government approved entitlement of air travel on Delhi-Srinagar, Srinagar-Delhi, Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Jammu
sectors to all personnel of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), now extended to ranks of constable, head constable and
assistant sub-inspector.
It gained significance after February 14 Pulwama attack. Questions were raised on why troops were not allowed to travel
by air so that risk and threat of travelling on road, in large convoys in the Kashmir Valley, is eliminated.
India hiked customs duty on all goods imported from Pakistan to 200% with immediate effect, to discourage imports from
Pakistan and hurt its already grounded economy.
India had withdrawn Most Favoured Nation status given to Pakistan, allowing basic customs duty on all goods exported
to be raised to 200%.
United Nations Security Council strongly condemned “heinous and cowardly” Pulwama suicide terror attack in which 40 CRPF
personnel were killed. However, Pakistan Ally China maintained its Double Standards and did not accept that the attack has
been controlled by pakistan or pakistan based organizations.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended discussions with India regarding hosting of global sporting events, after
India denied visas to 2 Pakistani Shooters, which were supposed to participate in 25m rapid fire pistol event in ISSF World Cup
2019 being held in New Delhi.
ISSF World Cup 2019 New Delhi was a qualification competition for Tokyo Olympics 2020.
IOC has withdrawn recognition of the 25m rapid fire pistol event and not whole World Cup.
Pakistan has been under immense international pressure to act against terror organizations operating from its soil.
For the first time, India has been invited to attend Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers Meet. India
will attend 46th Session of the OIC’s Council of Foreign Ministers to be held in Abu Dhabi from March 1 to 2.
Host UAE stated that India has been named as guest of honour in view of its great global political stature.
The invitation is significant as it hs come at a time when India is cornering Pakistan on all international forums due to its
alleged role in terror activities. Pakistan is a founding member of OIC and Pakistan has been blocking all efforts of India
to engage with OIC. This invitation is seen as a signal of changing geopolitical dynamics.
47. Indian Air Force's ASTE (Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment) flew India’s first military flight using blended bio-jet fuel on the An-
32 transport aircraft. This fuel is made from Jatropha oil sourced from Chattisgarh Biodiesel Development Authority (CBDA) and then
processed at CSIR-IIP Dehradun. IAF intends to fly An-32 transport aircraft using biojet fuel on 26 January 2019, in Republic Day flypast.
48. Indian Army inducted three major globally combat proven artillery gun system - M777 A2 ultra light howitzers (ULH), K-9 Vajra-tracked
self-propelled guns (South Korea) and Composite Gun Towing Vehicle (Ashok Leyland -India) at Deolali Field Firing Range in
Maharashtra, as first artillery gun systems to be inducted by Indian Army in three decades.
Last inducted was Bofors artillery gun system procured from Sweden in early 1980s.
49. Indian Army picked Russia’s Igla-S missile system as choice for its multibillion dollar contract for man-portable air defence systems
(MANPADS).
Russia’s Rosoboronexport, with bid Around $1.47 billion, emerged lowest bidder for Indian Army’s Very Short Range Air Defence
(VSHORAD) deal. Other bidders were MBDA of France (bid of $3.68 billion) and SAAB of Sweden (bid of $2.6 billion).
It is designed for use against visible aerial targets at short range such as tactical aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicle
(UAVs), cruise missile, head-on or receding, in presence of natural (background) clutter and countermeasures. As per requirements
of Indian Army, it will have maximum range of 6km, altitude of 3km along with all-weather capability.
50. Indian Army showcased its artillery firepower by using ultra light Howitzers and indigenous Swathi weapon-locating radar at annual
“Exercise Topchi”, held at Deolali Camp near Nashik (Maharashtra).
51. Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted Regional Level Marine Oil Pollution Response Exercise titled ‘Clean Sea– 2018’ at sea off Port Blair
(Andaman & Nicobar (A&B) Islands).
52. Indian Coast Guard (ICG) launched new Offshore patrol vessel (OPV) ICGS Varaha, as 4th in series of 98 MOPVs designed and built
indigenously by Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
53. Indian Coast Guard Ship 'Vijit' became the first-ever Coast Guard ship to visit Indonesia (in Sabang).
54. Indian Navy Participated 15th edition of Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA-19) in Malaysia, with INS
Kadmatt, along with 29 other participating navies. Indian Air Force also participated in LIMA 2019, as its first participation in LIMA.
55. Indian Navy commissioned naval hospital ship INHS Sandhani at Naval station Karanja in Raigad district of Maharashtra.
56. Indian Navy completed refitting of Maldivian Coast Guard Ship (MCGS) Huravee at Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam and formally handed
it over to Maldives. It was originally commissioned as INS Tillanchang in March 2001, and was subsequently gifted to Maldives by India in
April 2006.
57. Indian Navy held largest coastal defence exercise off Indian coast, called Exercise SEA VIGIL. Its being undertaken along entire 7516.6
km coastline of India, involving all 13 coastal States and UTs. It is being held after 10 years of Infamous Mumbai Terror Attacks 2008 by
Pakistani Terrorists, known as 26/11.
58. Indian Navy inducted its first Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) which is deployed to rescue downed or disaster-struck
submarines at high sea. It will be based in Mumbai and will enhance Navy’s operational capabilities.
With this, India joined select list of international navies (United States, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore UK, Sweden
and Australia) with ability to search, locate and provide assistance to downed or disaster-struck or distressed submarines at high sea.
59. Indian Navy will conduct its flagship annual Western Seaboard coastal defence exercise Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise
(TROPEX) from January to March 2019. As part of TROPEX, Navy will conduct coastal defence exercise ‘Exercise Sea Vigil’.
60. Indian Navy's INS Trikand participated in a multinational training exercise ‘CUTLASS EXPRESS – 19’ held at Dijibouti Coast. It was
sponsored by U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM), and conducted by Naval Forces Africa (NAVAF).
61. Indian Navy's first flyaway Deep Sea Submarine Rescue System inducted at Naval Dockyard Mumbai.
New Submarine rescue system was needed as traditional methods of search and rescue at sea are ineffective for a disabled
submarine.
Indian Navy's Deep Sea Submarine Rescue System considered to be the most advanced system currently in operation globally, which
is capable of undertaking rescue from a disabled Submarine upto 650 m depth.
62. India’s first indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant completed its first deterrence patrol, completing its first long-range mission with
live nuclear-tipped missiles.
During deterrence patrol, a nuclear submarine carries nuclear missiles on board, where command and control protocols for its
operations are fully tested by its crew.
With this, India completed its survivable nuclear triad by adding maritime strike capability to land and air-based delivery platforms
for nuclear weapons. It makes India sixth country — after US, Russia, UK, France and China — to have fully operational nuclear triad.
INS Arihant is India’s first indigenously developed nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine. It was launched in 2009 and its
nuclear reactor went critical in 2013 and it was commissioned in 2016.
63. Indigenously upgraded artillery gun Dhanush has been inducted into Indian Army. In February 2018 Ordnance Factory Board (OFB)
received clearance for manufacturing of 114 Guns. Now, Gun Carriage Factory (GCF) Jabalpur has made ready 6 Dhanush guns for
issuance to Army.
Dhanush is a 155mm x 45mm calibre artillery gun, as upgraded version of Swedish 155-mm Bofors howitzers. It has strike range of
38 kilometres which is about 10 km better than the Bofors guns.
64. Indo China Joint Military Exercise Hand-in-Hand held at Chengdu (China), as 7th edition of this exercise.
65. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) received additional $777 million contract to supply LRSAM air and missile defence systems to seven
ships in Indian navy, in a contract with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL). LRSAM is part of Barak 8 family, and is an air and missile defence
system.
66. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) signed agreements worth $93 million with Indian Navy and Cochin Shipyard, for providing Naval
Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) systems to India.
67. Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Exercise called Rahat demonstrated in Rajasthan, jointly by Army in coordination
with NDMA.

Exercise code named SEA VIGIL' was also part of Tropex - 19.
70. Long range surface-to-surface Nuclear Capable Ballistic missile Agni V successfully test fired.
It has strike range of 5000 km.
It was 7th successful trail of Agni V. It is capable of carrying 1.5 tonnes of nuclear warheads.
71. Maharashtra cabinet approved conversion of Indian Navy’s longest-serving aircraft carrier INS Viraat, into India’s first-ever moored
maritime museum-cum-marine adventure centre. It was decommissioned in 2017.
72. Military certification agency Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) approved use of indigenously produced bio-
fuel for use in military aircraft, after various tests conducted on bio-jet fuel.
For use of bio-jet fuel on all military and civilian aircraft, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), in collaboration with the Indian Air
Force brought out a new standard for Aviation Turbine Fuels.
Biojet fuel is produced from non-conventional source that is non-edible vegetable or tree borne oil. The bio-jet fuel has been
produced from seeds of Jatropha plant sourced from Chhattisgarh and processed at CSIR-IIP’s lab at Dehradun.
Increased demand of bio-jet fuel would increase collection of tree-borne non-edible oil seeds, which will help generate additional
income for tribal and marginal farmers. This will also reduce carbon emissions and help India become a green fuel production hub.
73. Ministry of Defence awarded contract for construction of 4 Survey Vessels for Indian Navy to Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers
(GRSE) Limited Kolkata, with order value of 2435 crores.
First ship is to be delivered within 36 months and remaining within an interval of six months for each vessel.

Nuclear, Chemical & Biological warfare to its personnel during their NBC damage control training.
NBCTF Abhedya will help train personnel of naval ships fitted with nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) detection and protection
systems.
Abhedya is the maiden NBC simulator of the Indian Navy.
77. Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) received the bulk production clearance (BPC) for production of 114 nos of 'Dhanush', first ever indigenous
155mm x 45 calibre artillery gun, produced in India under 'Make in India' initiative.
'Dhanush' has been mechanically upgraded to fire standard NATO 155 mm ammunition and can accommodate both boll bags and the
bi-modular charge system (BMCS) which have resulted in increasing the range.

Kauhar, Amethi (Uttar Pradesh).
New joint venture will manufacture world famous Kalashnikov assault rifles of the newest 200 series and eventually will reach full
localization of production.
Plant will produce 7.5 lakh 7.62x39 mm caliber AK-203 Kalashnikov rifles.

Dassault Rafale won MMRCA competition in January 2012 to supply 126 Jet aircraft with additional 63 aircraft to Indian Air Force.
First 18 aircrafts were to be supplied by Dassault and remaining were to be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
Dassault refused to ensure quality of aircraft produced by HAL. In 2014, price of deal increased to $30 billion. This created price
issue and deal couldn’t be signed.
Thereafter, New central government confirmed the deal for 36 multirole fighter aircraft of 58000 crores from France’s Dassault
Aviation.
