The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is made up of two islands:Great Britain and


Ireland.
Great Britain is divided into three regions:Scotland, England and
Wales.The capitals are:Edinburgh (Scotland),Cardiff (Wales),London
(England),Belfast (Northern Island) and Dublin (Republic of Ireland).
London is both the capital of UK and England.
It’s situated in the southern part of England and it’s one of the
major cities in Europe in terms of size and population.It represents
the economic and cultural heart of Great Britain.It was founded by
the Romans who gave it the name of Landinium and later became
the principal seat of the Royal Family and government.
The river Thames divides London into two parts: the northern and
the southern. London in excellent for its transport like the
underground,which is the fastest of all.Another transport is the
plane,in fact in London there’s Heathrow,the busiest and the most
important airport.

London is full of interesting monuments like:


*Buckingham Palace: It has been the Royal Family’s London
residence since 1837
*Big Ben: It’s a clock tower
*The Tower of London: In the past was an observatory, now is a
prison
*Westminster Palace: is the seat of the House of Commons and
House of Lords.

The UK is a Constitutional Monarchy and operates under


parliamentary and common law dating back to Anglo-Saxon
customs.
The Parliament is made up of three elements:the Queen or the
King;the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
The House of Commons is elected every five years and it’s the
supreme body;
The House of Lords consists in Spiritual Lords and 12 Law Lords.
The Prime Minister nowadays is Gordon Brown.
Scotland

The mainland of Scotland is surrounded by a lot of


islands: Orkney and Shetland to the north-east and the Hebrides
to the west. The east coast of this fascinating country is
agricultural, while the spectacular west coast attracts many tourist
because of the beauty of the landscape and the islands.
The two major cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh, are only a short
distance away from each other - about 50 minutes by train - but
Edinburgh is on the east coast while Glasgow is on the west coast.
Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, but Glasgow, which stands on
the River Clyde and has a population of about 615.000, is the
biggest city in Scotland.
Edinburgh is a beautiful, open city with lots of green spaces. It is a
vibrant, dynamic city which attracts a lot of young people and it is
famous for its castle and arts festival in August.
In the 19th century Glasgow was one of Europe's leading industrial
cities. The main industry was shipbuilding. In the 20th century this
industry declined because modern city offering many cultural
events. Other important cities are Dundee and Aberdeen on the
east coast.
The north is known as the Highlands. This area is mountainous,
inhabited mainly by wildlife. If you are lucky you might see a stag
and you will certainly see lots of sheep and some Highland cows.
The highest mountain in Great Britain is in the Grampian Mountains
near Fort William. It is called Ben Nevis (1,334 m high)
A geological fault cuts the Highlands in two. This area is known as
the Great Glen and it contains four lochs one of which is the
famous Loch Ness.
These lochs are joined by the Caledonian Canal making it possible
to sail from Winter on the east coast to Fort William on the west
coast. Nowadays the canal, which is 100 km long, is used mainly for
tourism.

The Emerald Isle

Ireland, the Emerald Isle, is divided into two parts, Northern Ireland,
or Ulster, which is part of United Kingdom, and the Republic of
Ireland, or Eire, which is an independent Nation.
Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. Dublin is the capital and
largest city of the Republic of Ireland.

The Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland is a mass of more than


40,000 basalt columns left by a volcanic eruption. The tops of the
columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff and disappear
under sea. Legend says that Ireland giant Fionn Mac Cumhaill built
the causeway to walk to Scotland to flight his Scottish rival ,
Benandonner.

Londonderry in Northern Irelnad is one of the oldest cities in Ireland.


It was founded around 1610 by settlers from London. The original
city was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the early seventeenth
century.
At the time of the Industrial Revolution , Londonderry became a
shipping centre , with many ships leaving for the Americas.
Donegal is in the north of Ireland . It has wild mountains and a
rugged coastline . Donegal is probably Ireland’s mostly beautiful
county.

Dublin Castle was the seat of British rule in Ireland until 1922. Most
of the building dates from the eighteenth century. It fulfilled a
number of roles over the centuries , but first and foremost , it was a
royal residence. Today , the State Apartments are one of the most
splendid sites in Dublin .
These richly decorated rooms are used by the Irish Government for
presidential inaugurations, to host foreign Heads of State and for
State ceremonies.

The shamrock is the symbol of Ireland. It was traditionally used for


medicinal purposes. The shamrock was originally chosen as the
national emblem of Ireland because of the legend that Saint Patrick
used the plant to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity.
Shamrock have been considered by the Irish as good-luck charms .
Many Irish all over the world wear shamrock on Saint Patrick’s Day ,
March 17 th.
