● Dry erase marker
(5 min) Begin with a story with things inflating and deflating my balloon
throughout the day.
● (Inflate) I got Starbucks this morning
● (Deflate) I spilled my coffee on my shirt on my way to school
● (Deflate) I was late to class and got a tardy
● (Inflate) On my way to class, my friend told me she liked my skirt
● (Deflate) I forgot to charge my Chromebook so it was dead
● (Inflate) I got an A on my Math test that I was stressing about
Introduction/ ● (Inflate) I went to internship
Hook After completing the story, ask the class what the realized was happening
throughout my telling it
● The balloon gets bigger (inflates) when something positive happens
● The balloon gets smaller (deflates) when something negative happens

Give each student a balloon and ask them to show how inflated or deflated their
balloon is right now
● Have them hold up their balloons to show the class
**At the end of the lesson, ask them to do this again!
1. (10-20 min) On the main whiteboard have a column for inflate and
deflate drawn
a. Each group will have 4-5 balloon-shaped magnets with different
examples of inflators and deflators
b. The groups will have a few minutes to discuss with their
teammates
c. Then I will call them up by groups (everyone will put one
magnet on the board, that way no one is left out)
d. After all the groups have gone up, we will all discuss if they are
placed in the right spot or not and why
2. (20-30 min) I will the put a pile of small pieces of colorful paper on
each of the tables
a. I will explain to the class that everyone will write notes that
inflate their classmates’ and teachers ballons
i. They must write who it is to on the note, but they don’t
Instructional Activities have to put their name on it if they want it to be
anonymous
ii. Make sure they understand they can ONLY write
positive things on these notes, not anything negative
b. While they are writing these, I will put all of the individual paper
bags with each of the students’ names on it
c. Tell the class that once they are finished with ALL their notes,
they can go place it into that person’s bag
i. There should be a bag for each of the teachers in that
class as well (Mrs.Whyman, Mr.Louis, Mrs.Boyd,
Mrs.Boyett)
d. They will get their bags back next class
i. If they ask why they can’t have them now, tell them its
because we teacher still have to put in our notes
1. They really can’t have them back because I need
to check that all the notes are positive
[The next class day] Students gett back their bags and after they have read
Closure Activity them, I will ask them to re-hold up their balloons to show everyone how
inflated or deflated their balloon is now
For this lesson, there are no accommodations needed
