4
INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRY

Global scenario
Global solar market demand in 2017 was driven by China. for the first time,
China installed more than half of theworld’s solar capacity in one year – to be
exact, 53.3%. But the low cost of solar has been attracting many countries to
look seriously into this unique, flexible and distributed clean power technology.
While in 2016, only seven countries installed over 1 GW, in 2017, the number
has increased to nine (see p. 47, Chapter on GW-scale market overviews from
national associations of these countries).
2017 was another historic year for the solar power sector. More solar PV
capacities were installed globally than any other power generation technology.
Solar alone saw more new capacity deployed than fossil fuels and nuclear
combined. Solar added almost twice as much capacity as its renewable peer,
wind power.

In most emerging markets where the business environment deviates from the
ideal state, solar prices will remain considerably higher. However, development
financing institutions can help significantly to the financing side. The World
Bank Group’s Scaling Solar Programme has enabled a sub-5 US cents price
for two projects in the 60 MW Senegal tender, which French utility ENGIE and
its investment partner Meridiamwon in April 2018. Due to technical
improvements, solar power cost and price will quickly continue to decrease.

5
Key players in the industry
1. Tata power solar systems ltd.,:Tata Power Solar Systems Ltd is part of
the Tata Group and the largest integrated solar power player in the
country. It has three separate business segments – manufacturing of
solar cells and modules, engineering, procurement and construction
(EPC) for solar power projects and other solar products.
2. Suzlon,(powering a greener tomorrow):Suzlon is one of India’s leading
renewable energy companies. Its services span the entire life of wind
energy projects. It designs, develops, manufactures wind turbine
generators (WTGs). It also provides allied services, providing it a strong
presence across the wind power value chain.
3. ReNew power:ReNew Power Ventures operates as an independent
power producer. The company engages in the generation of non-
conventional energy through solar and wind power. It sells its power to
state electricity boards and large industrial companies in India.
Solar Water Heaters (SWH) are becoming increasingly attractive in sustainable
development. India is blessed with solar energy in abundance at no cost. India
is having high solar insolation of 46.5 KWh/sq./day for an average of 280 sunny
days and most of that resource has been left untapped. One of the popular cost-
effective devices that harness the solar energy is Solar Water Heating System
(SWHS). SWHS heating system is a commercially viable and technologically
mature product, exists in country for many years with enormous potential.

History

There are records of solar collectors in the United States dating back to before
1900, comprising a black-painted tank mounted on a roof. SWHS has been
widely used in Greece, Turkey, Israel, Australia, Japan, Austria and China.
Israel is a country, where solar water heaters are being used since 1950s.
There was a fuel crisis and restrictions were imposed on heating water using
fossil fuel. Since then the Israelis are accustomed with heating water using
SWHS. In 1980, the Parliament of Israel introduced a law on mandatory solar
heating for new residential buildings

6
India has tremendous potential for generating clean electricity through
Renewable Energy Sources (RES) namely Hydro, Wind and Solar. This
potential has been duly recognized and shows India's consciousness for
reducing carbon footprint as a developing nation. Government of India with an
aim to promote clean energy launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar
Mission(JNNSM) on 11th January 2010, which is one of the eight missions
under National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC–2008). This mission
visions to install 22,000 MW through grid connected and off grid power plants.
Achieving an installed capacity of this quantum is a task full of challenges. To
list the possible challenges and suggest a way forward, there is a need to study
solar energy sector in India in the past, which has motivated the authors to
discuss the evolution of solar energy in India since independence. Through this
paper authors have tried to outline the journey of solar energy in India since
1950 till date and highlight the potential issues as barriers and challenges which
could impact the ambitious mission taken up by Government of India.

Opportunities of solar energy

India has a varying climate extending from extreme to moderate due to its
unique geographical features. Normally in the countryside, wood or biomass is
used for heating and in urban areas electricity or fossil fuels are used for this
purpose. This practice is either expensive or degrades the environment.
Therefore, solar water heating system can be a suitable alternative to meet the
growing demand of hot water in the country without exerting further pressure
on electricity or cutting of forest trees from the forest areas. The SWHS has the
potential to save millions in energy costs in our country.

Government support for solar industry

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), government of India and

some state-level agencies have formulated many schemes for promotion of
SWHS. There are also provisions of providing soft loans under the interest
subsidy scheme through a network of financial institutions and tax benefits on
all investments in solar energy technologies. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency
(BEE) as per provision of the Energy conservation Act 2001 has prescribed
guidelines for Energy Conservation Buildings Code (ECBC), which sets

7
minimum energy standards for design and construction of buildings. SWHS is
one of the components covered under ECBC to enhance energy performance
of the buildings. With the objective of contributing to India’s Energy security and
sustainable development, the Prime Minister has launchedJawaharlal Nehru
National Solar Mission (JNNSM) in January 2010. The objective of the mission
is to establish India as a global leader in solar energy.

Scope of solar energy

Solar energy is powerful energy source by the sun and this energy source can
be harnessed by installing solar panels. The energy sun gives to the earth can
be used for one year for this reason the higher demand in market makes
improvement in technology turning into significantly efficient source of clean
energy. This motivates us to consider the solar equipment’s manufacturer for
our study.

The addition motivational points for our study are:

• Renewable energy:
Renewable energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources, which
are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain,
tides, waves, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy often provides energy
in four important areas: electricity generation, air and water heating/cooling,
transportation, and rural (off-grid) energy services.
• Eco friendly:
Products that contribute to green living or practices that help conserve
resources like water and energy. Eco-friendly products also prevent
contributions to air, water and land pollution. You can engage in eco-friendly
habits or practices by being more conscious of how you use resources.

• Saves electricity:
More sun means more energy produced and a greater potential to save with
solar. Certain areas have average more sunlight hours per day. Home’s
orientation toward the sun, the amount of shade and its roof type also affect a

8
solar system’s output. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can
be used to run household appliances and lighting.
• Improvement in technology:
Smaller appliances as they take less energy to power. This includes items like
toasters and microwaves rather than an oven. This is an easy way to cut costs
while you’re home for long stretches of time. If you do have to use the stove,
use lids on pans to speed up cooking time on the stove top. Even when you’re
home, you can take simple measures in order to reduce energy consumption.
Karnataka is the eighth largest states in India, rich in natural resources. It is
bestowed with high potential of Renewable Energy Resources especially Wind,
Small Hydro, Biomass, Cogeneration and Solar which offer great possibilities
of exploiting energy without polluting the environment and is effectively
implemented in all parts of the State, thereby improving economic condition of
the farmers and creating employment opportunities. Electricity is one of the
most vital energy sources for economic development activities. The economic
development of a country by and large depends on its efficient supply of power
which can help in transforming the many people and work.

Based on REN21's 2017 report, renewables contributed 19.3% to humans'
global energy consumption and 24.5% to their generation of electricity in 2015
and 2016, respectively. This energy consumption is divided as 8.9% coming
from traditional biomass, 4.2% as heat energy (modern biomass, geothermal
and solar heat), 3.9% hydroelectricity and 2.2% is electricity from wind, solar,
geothermal, and biomass.

11
PORTER’S FIVE FORCES ANALYSIS

Threat of substitute products (High)

The market for alternative technologies such as fuel cell technologies is

developing rapidly.Hydrogen fuel cells capable of producing high level of
electricity are becoming an economically attractive option due to low upfront
cost. Also, the cost of electricity generated using coal is still far lower than that
of solar energy.

12
Bargaining power of buyers (High)

There are many established players in this industry from PV module

manufacturers to multinational organizations, as the industry is maturing. Thus,
buyers have plenty of options to choose a solar solution provider. Also, solar
products are mainly differentiated based on cost/KW of efficiency, and thus, low
product differentiation in this industry makes buyer more discriminant.

Threat of new entrants (High)

The barriers to entry are relatively low, given the premise that manufacturing
PV modules is labor intensive, and requires limited technology. Also,
government subsidies and cultural interest in renewable energy are making this
industry lucrative, and lately this industry has seen many new entrants.

Bargaining power of suppliers (Medium)

Limited number of suppliers for crucial raw material such as Cadmium Telluride
gives suppliers a medium to high power of bargain. Demand for such type of
raw material is rapidly increasing, since many countries are adopting renewable
energy solutions.

Rivalry among competitors (High)

The Solar PV market is competitive and rapidly evolving. Many new firms are
entering this lucrative industry and existing established firms are diversifying in
solar energy, given the premise of various subsidies provided by governments
and increased customer awareness about clean energy. Thus, this industry is
a fiercely competed industry, and does not show prospects of high profitability.

However, by adopting vertical integration strategy, and focusing on innovation

through comprehensive R&D, it becomes possible to achieve economies of
scale, and sustainable competitive advantage. To sum, today’s global solar
industry is characterized by evolving technologies and standards that is leading
to improved features, such as more efficient and higher power output, improved
aesthetics, and smaller size panels.

• Concentrate on bulk order from government :
This is one of the great opportunity for the company because currently
government is coming lots of schemes about solar energy and that will useful if
company concentrate more on government projects.
• Future Scope for Solar equipment’s :
There is really scope for solar equipment’s presently and in future also. People
are more concerned about solar energy and utilization of that, not only in matter
of water heater they are finding many other thing.

Threat:
• Duplication of production :
In every sector this problem is very common. The company has faced
duplication of their product few years back and they complaint about it to related
departed and solved. So duplication can be done on brand name or with
individual parts of product.
• Local competitors :
As this is one of the common industry at present so there is more number of
competitor. So it is difficult to establish the brand name of the company.

SERVICE PROFILE
List of Disol Solar Systems manufacturing products

1. Solar water heaters

All domestic and industrial systems upto 4000LPD (liters per day) @ 60 deg.
C.; works on the principle of thermosyphon. Industrial systems beyond 4000
LPD to any capacity will work on forced circulation principle. It works same
as domestic solar water heater

2. Heat pumps.

A heat pump is an electrical device that extracts heat from one place and
transfers it to another. The heat pump is not a new technology; it has
been used in Canada and around the world for decades. Refrigerators
and air conditioners are both common examples of this technology.
Heat pumps transfer heat by circulating a substance called a refrigerant
through a cycle of evaporation and condensation. A compressor pumps
the refrigerant between two heat exchanger coils. In one coil, the
refrigerant is evaporated at low pressure and absorbs heat from its
surroundings. The refrigerant is then compressed en route to the other
coil, where it condenses at high pressure. At this point, it releases the
heat it absorbed earlier in the cycle.

29
3. Home lights
A solar lamp also known as solar light or solar lantern, is a lighting
system composed of an LED lamp, solar panels, battery, charge
controller and there may also be an inverter. The lamp operates on
electricity from batteries, charged through the use of solar photovoltaic
panel.
Solar-powered household lighting can replace other light sources like
candles or kerosene lamps. Solar lamps have a lower operating
cost than kerosene lamps because renewable energy from the sun is
free, unlike fuel.

30
4. Evacuated Tube Collector System (ETC)

Easy power introduces high efficient MIRACLE solar water heaters for domestic
& industrial applications, which is as per international stardards and made of
high density borosilicate tubes and coated (triple coating ), which are
vaccumised/ air evcuated to prevent conduction and convection heat losses.

1. Parabolic cooker

The purpose of a solar cooker is to convert sunlight into heat energy to cook
food. There are three main types of solar cookers: box, panel, and parabolic.
This particular parabolic solar cooker is also useful because it has an expansion
pipe which allows the angle of the reflective dish to be adjusted while cooking.
It is also large enough to capture and concentrate enough sunlight to boil water
in 10 minutes.

Today, solar cookers are globally used and continue to grow in popularity.
People are moving away from other fuel sources such as wood, coal, or natural
gas because of their harmful by-products and unavailability.

31
6. Bio-mass boilers

Heavy gauge metals and latest technology is

used for longer durability. It requires low
investment, No maintenance and less fuel
cost. It is easy to install and easy to shift.
Electrical power, gas, conventional power is
not required. Energy efficient, low smoke and
eco-friendly. Designed and manufacturing the
boilers as per the customer requirements and
site conditions.

Inward store

Key responsibilities:

• Provide the relevant entry pass for the incoming vehicles

• Unload the vehicles and handover the materials to area controllers
• Quantity check of the incoming material
• Issue goods receipt note, which is unofficial confirmation indicating that
the company has received the goods from the suppliers.
• Manpower : 3

35
Constraints:

• Manpower shortage is slowing down the operations in this department.

• Most entries are done manually which is time consuming and can cause
human errors.
Suggestions:

• Allot few more people for the quick operations

• Use barcode scanner instead of manual entry
• Provide more space for parking of incoming vehicles near unloading
yard.
Challenges for implementation:

• To implement bar coded documentation, all documents from suppliers

have to be printed with barcodes
• Providing for more space of vehicles need high initial investment.

Internal Quality Function

Key responsibilities

• Quality inspection of incoming raw material

• Clear or reject the raw material based on the inspection conducted.
Man power: 1 per shift

Constraints

• Man power shortage is slowing the functions of the quality department

• Single person cannot manage the entire material quality check in a less
time
Recommendation suggested:

• Increase in man power can help better functioning of department.

Advantages from the proposed recommendations

• Pace of material flow into plant increases as the quality inspection takes
much lesser time

36
Store

Key responsibilities:

• Receive and store incoming parts, and issue them when needed for the
production
• Monitor inflow an outflow of material
• Categorize material based on priority while storing so that retrieval of it
becomes easy.
Constraints:

• Difficulty to track incoming and outgoing goods. Since it is an assembly

plant there are too many components to handle and store.
• Chances of material going missing are high since there is no standard
procedure to collect material after unloading. There are different area
controllers for different types of materials and there are chances that
material gets misplaced at a different location.
Recommendations suggested:

• Adopt Warehouse Management System (WMS) for better

management of warehouse.
• Periodic review of stocks and reconcilement of physical and book
stocks can avoid discrepancies in the two records
• Slow moving and absolete items should be eliminated from the
system.
Advantages:

• WMS can improve efficiently by suggesting the best routes and methods
for picking and put away.
• Constant review will avoid mismatch in physical and on book inventory
Challenges:

• WMS require high initial investment.

• In a decentralized system, implementing and following a standard intake
procedure for all stores can be challenging.

37
Purchase and logistics

• Identificationand supply of suppliers. Vendor creation process

• Negotiation with customers and cost manage net.
• Release production order
• Monitor the performance of the suppliers by continuous supervision
regarding quality and delivery performance.
• Prepare schedule, communicate and procure raw materials from
suppliers based on this schedule
• Identify alternate suppliers and keep a contingency plan ready for the
parts having single supplier. Presence of alternative suppliers provides
back up option to such products where it is risky to rely on a single
supplier.
• Provide incentives to suppliers performing well on quality and delivery
performance. So that, it motivates them to continuously strive to improve
on their performance.

Dispatch

• Arrange and schedule vehicles for dispatch based on dispatch plan

• Generate invoice and package slip

CHAPTER 4

BUSINESS LEVEL PROCESSES

McKinsey’s 7’s Framework

Introduction:

McKinsey’s 7’s framework was developed by McKinsey, a well-known

consultancy firm in the United States, in the year 1970. 7s model provide an
effective way of analysing an organization, in terms of dynamic relationship
among 7 key elements namely structure, skill, style, strategy system, staff,
shared values.

The 7s framework was first mentioned in the “the art of Japanese management”
by Richard Pascale and Anthony Athos in 1981. They had been investigating
how Japanese industry had be so successful. At around the same time that
peters and Robert Waterman were exploring what made a company excellent.
The 7s framework was born at meeting of these four authors in 1978. It
appeared also in “In search of excellence” by peter and waterman and was
taken up as a basic tool by the global management consultancy company
McKinsey. Since then it is known as 7s model.

Hard element include:

• Strategy
• Structure
• Systems
Soft element include:

• Style
• Skills
• Staff
• Shared values
Hard elements can be easily identified and management directly influence
them. Some of them are organization hierarchy, reporting lines, span of
management, formal processes. IT systems and strategy statement. Soft

44
element like style, staff, skills, shared values are as important as hard element.
They are more difficult to describe, less tangible and more influenced by culture.

➢ Structure
Organization structure refers to the levels of authority in the organization.
It simply defines the superior and subordinate relationship in the
organization.
Functional structure

The functional structure groups positions into work units based on similar
activities, skills, expertise, and resources. Production, marketing, finance, and
human resources are common groupings within a functional structure.

45
Critical review of the design

As the simplest approach, a functional structure features well‐defined channels

of communication and authority/responsibility relationships. Not only can this
structure improve productivity by minimizing duplication of personnel and
equipment, but it also makes employees comfortable and simplifies training as
well. But the functional structure has many downsides that may make it
inappropriate for some organizations. Here are a few examples:

• The functional structure can result in narrowed perspectives because of

the separateness of different department work groups. Managers may
have a hard time relating to marketing, for example, which is often in an
entirely different grouping. As a result, anticipating or reacting to
changing consumer needs may be difficult. In addition, reduced
cooperation and communication may occur.
• Decisions and communication are slow to take place because of the
many layers of hierarchy. Authority is more centralized.
• The functional structure gives managers experience in only one field
their own. Managers do not have the opportunity to see how all the firm's
departments work together and understand their interrelationships and
interdependence. In the long run, this specialization results in executives
with narrow backgrounds and little training handling top management
duties.

➢ Systems
It is the procedures, process and routines that characterized how the
work should be done. It refers to the policies, norms developed to
support the organizational structure. Various systems are used in the
process of planning, production, accounting and also in maintaining
human resources information, like systems for evaluating performance
of employees, to maintain T and D records and for payroll.
Management information system: provide all hardware and software
and other facilities connected with data transmission.

46
INVENTORY CONTROL SYSTEMS
DSS allows just in-time inventory, here customer of DSS places order
and the production is based on these orders.

ATTENDANCE SYSTEM
The company has a register book that has to be signed by the employees
attended for the day and the other shift.

➢ Strategy
Strategy is an action that managers take to attain one or more of the
organization’s goals. A strategy is all about integrating organization
activities and utilizing and allocating the scarce resources within the
organizational environment so as to meet the present objectives. The
following are the core objectives of the company.
• Investigation of potential renewable energy resources
• Inviting applications from other private sector developers for
development of proven projects in the sector.
• Assisting the developers in obtaining statutory clearances. Being
a spokesperson on behalf of the community of developers before
the company
• Publicity of renewable energy usage.
➢ Skills
Skills are the distinctive capabilities of personnel of the organization as
a whole. The managing director is the sole empowered authority for
decision taking in the organization; the power have been delegated by
administrative board to the managing director.
Skills that they use are:
• To prevent obsolescence
• To prepare employees for higher level task
• Increase productivity
• Improve organizational climate
• Improve health and safety

47
➢ Shared values
Shared values are which guide decisions and behaviour of its
employees, management and the members of the organization. Shared
values mean that the company shares the same guiding value. Values
are the things that would strive and even if they were demonstrably not
profitable the value act as an organization conscience, providing
guidance in times of crisis. Company gives importance to both its
customers and employees, it is reflected by the mission statement and
moto of the company is to satisfy its customers.
Every employee of the company has a policy of respecting the
employees according to rules and principles.
• As a company, and as individuals, we value integrity, honest,
openness, personal excellence, constructive self-criticism,
continual self-improvement and mutual respect.
• We are committed to our customers and partners and have
passion for technology.
• We take on big challenges, and pride ourselves on seeming them
through.
• We hold ourselves accountable to our customers, shareholders,
partners and employees by honouring our commitments,
providing results, and striving for the highest quality.
• Passion for excellence
• Provide quality work line.
• Identify and reward the committee employee.
• Staff counsels are done to identify the problems of employees.
• Ethical practices with an emphasis on transparency.
• Equal opportunity.
• Credibility for better dealing.
• Core and compassion for others.

48
➢ Style
Characteristics or elements combined and expressed in a particular
(often unique) and consistent manner. Style here refers to the
management style or the leadership style followed by the superiors in
the organization to carry out different activities in the organization.
Leadership style is followed in the pattern of behaviour which a leader
adopts in influencing the behaviour of his followers in the organizational
context.
Style includes two things:
1. Management style
2. Organization style

➢ Staff
The entire group of employees who work at a company. Those
employees who work under a given supervisor. The act of holding a
position at a company.
Good and hardworking citizens play an essential role in the development
of nation and employees are responsible for the success or failure of the
company.
The company employees are well discipline and hard workers have full
commitment to the training.

49
CHAPTER 5
FINDINGS, SUGGESTIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
FINDINGS:

▪ It is currently making profit but when we analysed the balance sheet.

▪ Profit and Loss account, profit is declining year by year it’s because of
organisation witnessing less sales.
▪ Reason for decrease in sales in the organisation is because of less
concentration on marketing of their products.
▪ Basically in solar industry Disol is a company which is more into research
and development department.
▪ Solar industry has a very bright future compare to other industries
because it is a renewable source of energy
▪ By taking it as advantage they can come up with new solar products.

SUGGESTIONS

So, to overcome this issues they can implement suggestions like updating their
website time to time, concentrating on new areas, and implement of new
services, targeting online customers and also concentrating on their key
products.

CONCLUSION:

During the pilot study, the response given by company was really helpful for me
to understand the current problem of the company, I immensely appreciate their
involvement as they were very co-operative. The main aim was to do something
and bring out our management skills through this project. Also came across
many phases which made us work together and it was an excellent experience
being in this organization.
