CahyaltiDik19A - Paradigmatic and Syntagmatic

1. Syntagmatics refers to the linear and sequential relationships between linguistic elements within an utterance or sentence. Paradigmatics refers to the substitutable relationships between elements that can occupy the same structural position. 2. In my opinion, syntagmatics and paradigmatics define how language works according to structuralism. Syntagmatics describes the structure of language through sequencing, while paradigmatics describes the function of individual elements through their substitutability. 3. Examples of syntagmatics include analyzing the structure of scientific texts or sequencing competencies. Examples of paradigmatics include analyzing substitutable elements in fairy tales or competencies.

Jawaban:

1. Syntagmatic
Hartmann and Stork (1972: 231) menyatakan bahwa syntagmatic is The ‘horizontal’ relationship between linguistic
elements forming linear sequences, e.g. in the sentences Come quickly there is a syntagmatic relationship
between the words come and quickly, and on a different level between the phonemes /k/, /Λ/ and /m/ in the
word /kΛm/ → paradigmatik.
Syntagmatic relation is a type of sematic relations between words that co‐occur in the same sentence or
text(Asher, 1994).
Paradigmatic
Paradigmatic relation is a different type of sematic relations between words that can be substituted with another
word in the same categories (Hj⊘rland, 2014).
tataran tertentu.

2. In my opinion they are the two relationships between linguistic elements that define how language works,
according to structuralism. They are complementary. The syntagmatic relationship is how linguistic elements can
be sequenced. It's syntax. And morphology. And phonotactics. The paradigmatic relationship is which linguistic
elements behave in the same way in syntagmatic relationships. It's lexicon. And phonetics. And the... other bit of
morphology. The syntagmatic relationship gives you the structure of language; the paradigmatic relationship
defines the function of individual bits of language.
