Certification for New Lecturers

in
English as the Medium of Instruction

Offered by
AAU Language and Communication Services (LACS)
in cooperation with AAU Learning Lab
Language and Communication Services (LACS) welcomes you to the
English certification programme:
AAU’s English certification is a guarantee that you master the oral English needed to
communicate complex concepts clearly in university instruction. Once you fulfil the
criteria, you will be awarded an internationally recognised certificate that documents
your skills at the C1 level on the European Framework for languages (CEFR). C1 is the
second highest level tested.

Why is certification necessary?

AAU is an internationally-oriented university offering an increasing number of courses
in English. For the students’ sake, lecturers must speak the language at a high level,
even though they are not native speakers. This is so vital that the AAU management
has made certification obligatory for new lecturers.

But my English skills are

already excellent…
If you already have the required
skills, certification will not take
much of your time. You probably
command more specialist jargon
than 99% of native English speakers.
However, you still need to be able
to ‘unpack’ ideas in advanced but
straightforward English. Using
English to teach involves a full range
of language and communication
skills in oral academic English.

Do I need to speak perfect

English?
CEFR level C1 certainly demands
high-level skills, but you need to
use English as a ‘lingua franca’ to
communicate clearly with other
non-native speakers, so other factors
are equally important. You don’t
have to speak exactly like a native,
but AAU certification checks your
ability to use English strategically
to full communicational
effect. In other words, effective
communication is the central
criterion.
More than a final evaluation…
As part of their pedagogical training, new AAU lecturers receive free instruction
before certification if they need it; certification is also available for
other AAU teaching staff at a fee (for details, contact LACS).
Preliminary screening will identify your needs and place you
in one of three bands. Band A candidates need a great deal of
help over two semesters before attempting certification. Band
B candidates are offered courses for just one semester before
certification. Band C candidates are so close to C1 level that
they are offered no further free instruction before the actual
certification. If you follow our recommendations but do not
manage at the first attempt, you will be offered further help and
a second attempt to get the final certification.

In brief, all new lecturers who participate in the AAU pedagogical programme
are initially screened. Those who need help attend free recommended courses,
most of which take place during the spring semester. The certification of C band
participants takes place in May and June. Certification for A and B band
participants takes place in September and October. If you have not yet reached a
sufficiently high level to achieve certification at the first attempt, you will be
offered more free intensive coaching late in the Autumn Semester to help you
prepare for a second attempt at certification in January. If you still have not
reached C1 level at the second attempt, you may continue with coaching
and make further attempts, but please note that your department will have to
fund your certification activities after attempt 2.
Please note that if you cannot participate on the dates offered this year, you will
have to wait until the following year.
