Feldman's Essay Rubric

This document outlines the criteria for scoring an essay using Feldman's Method to analyze and compare two works of art. Describe -Artist, title, date, medium (1pt each)


-Description: must be elaborate and provide specific examples of what the artwork looks like (2pts)
-Each of the three most important Elements of Art are listed, and specific examples of where they exist within the artwork, as well
as key “buzz” words (organic, geometric, flat, shallow, deep, etc.) are mentioned and explained. (1pt per Element of Art, 2pts per
explanation for a total of 9pts) /15

Analyze -Each of the three most important Principles of Design are listed, as well as the Elements of Art they help to illustrate. Specific
examples of where the Principles occur are clearly identified. (1pt per Principle of Design, 2pts per explanation for a total of 9pts) /9

Interpret -Categorized the piece as being Perceptual, Expressive, and/or Non-Objective (1pt)
-Clearly explained why it was categorized that way, providing specific examples from the artwork (2pts)
-Discussed the artistʼs intent, and justified why you believe that is the intent (2pts) /7
-Discussed the mood of the artwork and provided examples of how the Elements and Principles help to create the mood (2pts)

Judge -Stated the artist, title, date, and medium of the second artwork (1pt each)
-Discussed at least two similar Elements and/or Principles present in both pieces of art and provided specific examples for each
artwork. (4pts) /16
-Discussed at least two major differences of Elements or Principles used within each work of art, and provided specific examples
for each artwork. (4pts)
-Compared or contrasted which category best represents each work of art (Perceptual, Expressive, or Non-Objective), and
provided specific justification for your response. (2pts)
-Discussed which artwork you preferred, and your reasons why. (2pts)
