Psychologists say that when a person makes a moral choice, two factors are involved: the act of choosing and the psychological factors that provide raw material for the choice. This raw material can consist of either normal feelings common to all people, or abnormal feelings resulting from problems in the subconscious. For example, a natural fear of real dangers is normal, while an irrational fear of harmless things is abnormal. Psychoanalysis aims to address the abnormal feelings to provide better raw material for moral choices, while morality concerns the actual acts of choosing. For example, two men going to war - one with a natural fear that he can overcome through moral effort to become brave, and the other with exaggerated fears not affected by moral effort.
