Seismic Design of Steel Structures, Homework #6 Due: June 8, 2020

This document provides details for a homework assignment to design a two story steel plate shear wall (SPSW) structure. It includes: 1) Geometry, material properties, and lateral load information for the SPSW 2) Design steps to determine steel plate thicknesses, forces on beams/columns from panel action, and selection of horizontal boundary element (HBE) sizes using capacity design 3) Additional notes on assumptions, such as tension field angle, lateral support, material properties, and equations to represent flexural capacity of beams.

Seismic Design of Steel Structures, Homework #6

Due: June 8, 2020

A two story steel plate shear wall (SPSW) with the P2/2 P2/2
geometry and the lateral forces is shown in the figure. The
material of the steel panel LYP100 and the material of beams h2
and columns is SN490C of Fy=3.3tf/cm2. Please design this
SPSW considering the following steps: P1/2 P1/2
(1) Assume the tension field angle α=45° and the two VBEs
resist 20% of the design shear, select the steel plate h1
thicknesses in the 1st and 2nd stories according to the AISC
2016 Seismic Provisions. (Design the thickness to the full
mm, such as 7mm, 8mm)
L
(2) Express the uniformly distributed force components acting
on beams and columns due to the panel action when the panel is fully yield.
(3) Neglect the gravity load effect and apply the capacity design method to select the HBEs so
that the plastic hinge would form only in the HBE ends (using the center line to center line
dimension). Express the axial force and moment demand diagrams first.
(4) Apply the capacity design method to proportion the H400×400×tw×tf column. Same
column size is used for the 1st and 2nd stories. Express the axial force demand diagram for
the 1st story column first. Assume an η of 0.4 for the frame sway action and express
flexural demand, considering both the frame and panel actions, on the compressive column.

Note:
1. P2=300tf, P1=150tf, story height h1=h2=4.0m, L=4m.
2. Assume the lateral support for VBEs and HBEs is continuous in this example.
3. Consider the elastic-perfect-plastic material property. The actual yield stress of the LYP100
steel panel is 130Mpa. The over strength factor of SN490C steel is 1.1.
4. You may use the following equations to represent the flexural capacity of the BEs:

  1 P 
 f y Z 1 −  u 
  2  Pn 
M*p = lessor of 
9   Pu 
 8 y 1 −  P
f Z 
   n 
