Sustainable Tourism Management (HTT 683)

The document discusses the role of museums in sustainable tourism development, focusing on the Black Heritage Museum in Badgary, Nigeria. It argues that cultural attractions like museums can generate significant revenue for communities and countries through tourism. Specifically, the Black Heritage Museum's slave relics are its main attraction and draw potential visitors. However, the museum needs to promote itself more creatively and host engaging events to attract modern audiences. With better management and marketing that capitalizes on its cultural artifacts and history, the Black Heritage Museum could become a major tourist destination and help diversify Nigeria's economy beyond oil.

As stated in the journal, museum and tourism are closely related and attached to one
another. This journal is focusing on culture as a sustainability product that could generate
the revenue of Badgary. It is one of the main product that takes a major role in tourism
development. Furthermore, in Nigerian Tourism Alagoa (1998) stated that the heritage
culture is the strongest product that is capable of forming a firm support of economy. It is
also an identity to the country as the country do not have that much of attraction. Museum is
one of the place that collects and protects all the bits and pieces of the country such as the
scientific arts, artistic or even historical valued items. Black Heritage Museums happens to
be the main attraction in the country of Nigeria especially for the slave relics. In fact, this
museum helps the country to sustain the tourism development. The Black Heritage Museum
could be the most accurate sustainable tourism in cultural parts if the goods and materials
are well conserved and utilized. The journal also studied whether the slave relics in Black
Heritage Museum had attract or could attract the potential visitors.

In my own opinion, sustainable development in tourism should put more focus on the
cultural parts besides the ecological and environmentally product management. This is
because culture of that place illustrate the identity of the place. As trend changes
accordingly, people are not interested to visit museums. This can be seen in the
questionnaire that has been taken out in the study. People visiting museums all on different
purposes. In order to attract people more, the management should do something to promote
the museum. Black Heritage Museum has its own slave relic as the number one attraction in
it, so the stakeholders there have to make use of this thing to make people become attracted
to it. It could be that people do not really want to go to museum because it is just a plain visit.
This is an opportunity for the stakeholders in Nigeria to create something new to catches
visitors’ attention. For example, conducting an event regularly regarding the culture that
could let the visitors join just like all the other countries are doing. For instance, the
Japanese which they let the visitors to act like they are Japanese in their cultural place. On
top of that, the management and the stakeholders have to take part in making it a top
attraction for visitors and the promotions have to be very creative because people nowadays
are all looking for new catchy things.

In a nutshell, it is significant for Black Heritage Museum in Badgary to start earn more
revenue in order to help the country to balance their economy. This will not make the people
depends on the oil sector only because they have their own attraction that could lead in
tourism sector. The operative management and marketing of Black Heritage Museum will
help a lot in making it a tourist attraction place and together will make Nigeria as one of the
tourist destination in the world. Culture itself is a wealth for the country and it is something
that shows how the country manage to have something that is old and yet can be develop.
This is to show that museum is one of the sustainable development that a country has to
focus on too.
