REACTOR DESIGN - Docx Fyp My

The document summarizes the design of a packed-bed reactor for the oxidation of ammonia to nitric acid over a platinum-rhodium catalyst. It is a heterogeneous, exothermic reaction. The design calculations determine the weight of catalyst needed is 6900 kg for 95% conversion. The volume of the reactor is calculated to be 16.7 m3, with a length of 4.35 m and diameter of 2.17 m. The space time is 0.698 hr and space velocity is 1.4 hr-1.

REACTOR DESIGN

Ammonia react with oxygen in the presence of catalyst (oxidation of ammonia to nitric acid over
a catalyst gauze of 9:l platinum/rhodium alloy) which is heterogeneous, highly exothermic, gas-
phase catalytic reaction of ammonia with oxygen. So, we select Packed-bed reactors that are
tubular reactors filled with catalyst particles. In PBRs it is the weight of catalyst W that is
important.

REACTION:

NH3 + 1.25O2 → NO + 1.5H2O

 Weight of catalyst

dW F A 0

dX

W= ∫ dX
−rA 0

 Reaction is first order

So,

-rA= k CA

C AO (1−X ) T ∘
-rA = k
(1+ ℇX ) T

CAO = Po / RTo

AT

Po= 10 bar

To=519K

R=8.314*10-5 m3bar K-1 mol-1

10% NH3

CAO = X 0.1
(8.314∗10−5)(519)
CAO = 23.175 mol/m3

 For First Order Reaction ( from literature)

Kcat= 0.0858 s-1

Pcat = 2.06 g/cm3 (density of catalyst)

for k

kcat = pcat * k

Kcat

k = 0.041 X
g.s 1 cm3

k = 4.1*10-8 m3/g.s

-rA= k CA

At

TO = 519K

T = 1133K

X = 0.95 (for 95% conversion)

So,

W = 6900 kg

D3=V*2/ π

D= 2.17 m

L = 2D

L = 2(2.17)

L = 4.35 m

 Space time

We know relation for space time is,

 =V/Vo
V0 = FA0/ CA0
FAO =555.3 mol/hr
CAO = 23.175 mol/m3

VO = 555.3/23.175
VO = 23.96 m3/hr
V = 16.7 m3
 =V/Vo
 = 16.7/23.9
 = 0.698 hr
 Space Velocity
It is reciprocal of space time,
S =1/
S= 1/0.698
S=1.4 hr-1
Table 1 : Specification sheet of Reactor
Weight of a catalyst 6900 kg
Volume of a reactor 16.7 m3
Length 4.35 m
Diameter 2.17 m
Space Time 0.698 hr
Space Velocity 1.4 hr-1
