Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) sentence transformations practice of comparing/

contrasting language
Use of English Part Four/ Speaking Part Two
For questions 1 – 7, complete the second sentence so that it has the same meaning as
the first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. You must use
between two and five words, including the word given.

1. Tom thought that the party would be more exciting than it turned out to be.
NOT

The party was not as exciting as Tom had thought it would be.

2. Tom doesn’t speak French nearly as well now as he used to.


MUCH

Tom used to speak French much better than he does

1. The answer is that one because ¨Than¨ is a comparative in the first sentence, but in
the second one we use ¨as¨ which takes the same place.
2. It is comparative, because he used to speak French much better ¨Than¨.
3. The sentence tell us that there is not much difference, so there are similarities indeed.
4. Again, we found similarities about their opinions, so they have a lot in common when
talking about climate change.
5. This is a similarity and also here they already gave us the answer, because they say
¨absolutely identical¨, so they we use the expression ¨exactly the same¨.
6. Here we can notice a huge difference among the ideas of how to change the
company, so they have ¨very different ideas¨.
7. Comparative, because the speaker says that compared to the other holiday, his one
was ¨more luxurious than¨
8. Here they compare how teenagers feel before and nowadays, so we say that
¨teenagers are more stressed than they used to¨.
