Research About Tardiness

This thesis examines the factors affecting tardiness of students at Mount Carmel College for the 2019-2020 school year. A survey was conducted of 40 students across different year levels and courses to understand causes of tardiness. The findings showed that students' morning routines before class, such as bathing and getting ready, most significantly impacted tardiness. Other factors were lack of sleep due to late night classes and always feeling sleepy. The study concluded that students need to better manage their morning routines and sleep schedules to arrive at class on time. Recommendations included training students to prepare faster in the mornings or prepare ahead of time to prevent tardiness.

ABSTRACT

Name of the Institution : Mount Carmel College

Title : FACTORS AFFECTING THE TARDINESS

OF THE STUDENTS OF MOUNT CARMEL
COLLEGE 2019-2020

Researcher : John Paulo A. Rivera

Degree : Bachelor of Science in Office

Administration

Date Completed : March 2020

The major purpose of this study is to determine the

Factors Affecting the Tardiness of Students of Mount Carmel

College. Specifically, it will sought to answer the

following specific in terms of: a. Gender, b. Age, c. Year

Level, d. Distance between residence and school and

e. Number of sleeping hours.

This study used descriptive-survey design, descriptive

design which the 40 respondents (10 students per year) of

students from different courses in Higher Education

Department sought to describe the current status of an

identified variable. These research projects are designed to

provide systematic information about a phenomenon. The

researcher does not usually begin with a hypothesis, but is

vii
likely to develop one, after collecting data. The analysis

and synthesis of the data provide the test of the

hypotheses. Systematic collection of information requires

careful selection of the units studied and careful

measurement of each of the variables.

After retrieving the result of the survey, the data

gathered were tallied, tabulated and analyzed through

computing for the treatment of the following formula:

Sum of the weighted scores

Weighted Mean =
N

Findings: Punctuality is one of the virtues beyond reproach.

Much of the time and wealth will be save if this virtue will

be carried out to the system of every responsible citizen.

In Mount Carmel College, student’s tardiness is not a

foreign issue. This lost standing problem plague every

students from Higher Education Department.; and the students

of Mount Carmel College tardiness are greatly affected by

their preparation before going to school. Taking a bath and

fixing themselves are the most prevalent factors that

affects their tardiness couple with always sleepy behavior

due to lack of sleep and night schedule of classes.

Conclusions: The students of Mount Carmel College tardiness

are greatly affected by their preparation before going to

school. Taking a bath and fixing themselves are the most

prevalent factors that affects their tardiness coupled with

always sleepy behavior due to lack of sleep and night

schedule of classes.; According to a study published in

usatoday.com early classes correlates to higher college

grades. Specifically, the study’s co-author Pamela Thacher

told The New York Times, “For every hour of class that you

have later, you get about a .02 difference, so, three hours

of difference between class start times will result in a .06

difference in grades.” Furthermore, according to the study,

a morning class can often be the catalyst for students to

get to slept earlier, complete work more efficiently, and,

most importantly, stay sober-- all of which help their

grades.; The habitual tardiness of the selected students of

Mount Carmel College can be explained by the theory of

incompetence. According to this theory, chronic lateness

reflects the chaos and disorganization in every other face

of people’s existence. Being late is their choice. There are

a lot of possible remedies available if they really want to

come to school early. If other students can make it on time

why can’t they.; and in addition according to the theory of

Anal-Retentive Syndrome, some students are always late

ix
because they want to attract attention from their teachers

and classmates.

Recommendations: Since the researcher already identified the

main factors affecting the tardiness of Mount Carmel

Students is their daily morning routine before going to

school, the researcher suggests that those students to train

themselves to prepare faster or if not prepare ahead of time

before class to prevent tardiness.; Individual motivation

and intrinsic factors affect student’s behavior towards

tardiness.; The average sleeping hours of Mount Carmel

Students as found out by the researcher is 6.04 hours, far

less than the prescribed 8 hours of sleep for adult per day.

This is the reason why students always feel sleepy in class.

To combat this problem the researcher suggest that students

should a lot at least 8 hours of sleep per day to prevent

sleepiness in class and promote going to school early

habit.; and the management of Mount Carmel College should

make sure to inculcate in their policies and guidelines on

conducting classes special activities for the students to

prevent sleepiness in class specially that the classes are

conducted during evening. Furthermore, they should also

formulate more activities for the students that will arouse

their interest to go to school. This activities should

x
include fun related activities to serve as an incentives for

the student go early in class.
