CHAPTER 6: Data Presentation

CHAPTER 6: DATA PRESENTATION

Data presentation is finding the best data for the research that can be

compared among other data to be analyzed critically. In order to be able to do

as such, numerical data are needed that are reliable and must have the

validity of such. These data are then used to make possible recommendation

and conclusions for the final drawing.

6.1 Introduction

In the process of the researcher, he has conducted different strategies

to gather relevant data that will influence the overall research. The first person

he contacted is Antonio Agulto from CITEM. Here, the researcher had

interview for the quality and state of the convention industry of the Philippines.

The next person the researcher contacted was Engineer Schubert

Dichos from the government of Cebu City where he went to the site in South

Road Properties (SRP). He was able to gather feasible ideas for the site and

the future plans of the government. He also took advantage of the trip to Cebu

by contacting the Cebu Investment Promotions Center where by he is able to

gather an economic fact book that largely influence critical data for the

research.

6.2 Archival Materials

6.2.1 Metric Handbook Planning and Design Data

This material is presented by the researcher as a basis for

standard that is edited by David Adler. This book summarizes the

different ideas and standards for different design problems. The

information gained from this book is invaluable as a reference of the

researcher.

6.2.2 Interpretation of Archival Materials

Based on the table shown above, the flight

domestically has dramatically increased during 2009 when it

increased almost 30 percent more flights.

CHAPTER 6: Data Presentation

Base on the table shown above the international flights going

to Cebu dramatically increases from 2007 when it moved greatly to

7000 flights.

Retail Spaces

For the retail area, there were data gathered from Philippine Retailers

Association of Cebu (PRA-Cebu) that luxury brands have expressed interest

to enter the Cebuano market. As Francis Monera, president of Ayala-led

Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI),would put it ―foreign and local luxury brands are

continuously assessing the Cebuano market and Ayala Center Cebu is one of

those malls that they are looking into.‖ In the Philippines, only Greenbelt 5,

which is owned by the Ayala Group of Companies, showcases luxury brands

like Gucci, Rolex and Louis Vuitton.

Ayala Center has already looked at the possibility of the housing the

high-class brands and have already considered putting these luxury shops as

part of the expansion of Ayala Center Cebu through its upcoming Phase 2B.

This expansion plan for Ayala Center Cebu is to complete the original

development of the Cebu Business Park‘s (CBP) 9.6-hectare super block.

CHAPTER 6: Data Presentation

Expansion and renovation of the mall is part of CHI holding company, Ayala

Land Inc.‘s efforts to stamp the Ayala mall brand in all its malls.42

In 2012, Cebu‘s retail industry is forecasted to be even more upbeat as

industry stakeholders in Cebu foresee the entry of more malls, sophisticated

brands, and expansion of existing boutiques.

According to lead officials of the Philippine Retailers Association of

Cebu (PRA-Cebu), the continued robust growth in the tourism, real estate and

business and process outsourcing (BPO) industries will have a positive ripple

effect on Cebu‘s retail sector. As Melanie Ng, the incoming Chairperson of

PRA-Cebu would say it ―We anticipate an interesting year for the retail

industry this 2012 because as we see more local mall players opening and

existing ones expanding, that means more opportunities for new brands and

sophisticated ones opening,‖

In Cebu, more malls are seen to rise within the metropolitan area this year.

Following the recent opening of the J Centre Mall in Mandaue City, the SM

chain is set to open its north-based shopping mall in Consolacion by year-

end.

Ayala Center Cebu has already began its P2-billion mall expansion in

the first quarter of 2012. The opening of the Ayala Center expansion which is

set for completion before the end of 2013, will house luxury brands like Louis

Vuitton, among others. In Cebu, retailers are now preparing for innovative

strategies to remain highly competitive.

CHAPTER 6: Data Presentation

Hotel Space

There is a need to have a supporting hotel for the convention center

since based on the number of people attending a convention, 40% actually

stays in a hotel. To supplement this number of attendees, there is now a need

to make a hotel beside the convention.

A hotel should provide the proper services to suit the needs of the

users. Such needs are to have a clean room, good food, good service and

finally value for their money. The idea of having a hotel should make it

financially viable so that it can properly support the main attraction which is

the convention center.

6.3 Observation Activity

The researcher observed both SMX and WTC (World Trade Center)

and drawed the strengths and weaknesses of both. It is crucial data to

value to the convention industry of the Philippines.

6.4 Interview Activities

CHAPTER 6: Data Presentation

6.4.1Site Interview

The researcher interviewed Engineer Schubert Dichos reagarding the

site of South Road Properties in Cebu city. He gave information regarding the

breakwater data and the eventual future development of the site. The

engineer gave the researcher the necessary documents to follow the rules

and regulation pertaining to the site. It can be said that the knowledge gained

from the trip to Cebu is worth it because the data needed to analyze the site is

netted.

6.4.2 CITEM interview

The researcher interviewed Antonio Agulto regarding the state of the

convention and events in the Philippines. His opinion on the lack of facilities

and suggested remedies help the researcher gain more idea about the

present condition of the convention industry. Antonio Agulto suggested to

research on the benchmarking famous international convention centers in

Dubai, Frankfurt and Hong Kong.

CHAPTER 6: Data Presentation

The data presented on this chapter are based on the methodology

given by the researcher. The data gathered are analyzed to tackle and show

the potential problems of the research. The data evaluated will be beneficial to

the researcher when the design part starts. The interview research is crucial

to the totality of the presentation since it gives definite and more precise

understanding of the status of the problem. The observations will help narrow

down the possible problems that hard data could not show. The archival

material is the data that will enable e the researcher to know how and where

to tackle the design problem necessary to solve the overall purpose of the

research.
