Pre-Calculus Q2 Module 9

The document discusses applying trigonometric identities to find other trigonometric ratios. It defines the six trigonometric ratios using the mnemonic SOHCAHTOA and explains how if one ratio is known, the missing sides of a right triangle can be determined using the Pythagorean theorem to then calculate the other ratios. Students work through examples determining missing sides and ratios. They examine an example of using one given ratio to find the remaining five ratios by setting up the right triangle based on the information given.

SUBJECT: PRE-CALCULUS
QUARTER 2 – MODULE 10
Applying Trigonometric Identities to Find Other Trigonometric Ratios

Objectives:
A. Recall the six trigonometric ratios and how to find
them in a right triangle
B. Illustrate the process of finding the other trigonometric ratios
using one trigonometric ratio
C. Solve the other trigonometric ratios using one trigonometric
ratio

KEY CONCEPTS

A trigonometric ratio, in a right triangle is found using a

famous mnemonic “SohCahToaCaoShaCho”, which means
that:
o pposite side adjacent side opposite side
s∈¿
h ypotenuse
, cos ¿ hypotenuse , tan¿ adjacent side ,

adjacent side hypotenuse hypotenuse

cot ¿ , sec ¿ ,csc ¿ .
opposite side adjacent side opposite side

Basing from these ratios, if one is given, then you can solve
for the other ratios just by finding the missing side
measurement (using Pythagorean Theorem).

Pythagorean Theorem: c 2=a2+ b2 , where c is the hypotenuse and a

and b are legs of a right triangle.

REVIEW

The Perfect Trio

In groups of three assigned by the teacher, use the given for
each item to determine the missing side of the right triangle
using the Pythagorean Theorem. Take a and b as legs and c
as hypotenuse. Simplify your answer.
Example
Given: a = 3, b= 7, c = _____
c 2=a2+ b2
c 2=3 2+7 2
c 2=9+ 49
c 2=58
c= √ 58
1. a= 6, b = 4, c= _____
2. a = 7, b = ___, c= 10
3. a = _____, b= 5, c =10

INTRODUCTION

B
Based from the previous activity, what can you observe
about the three parts of the right triangle? Will you be able to
find the missing parts if only one is given?

ACTIVITY 1

Know Your Ratio

In the given figure below, Reinier identified the
six trigonometric ratios using the given mark angle. His
teacher told him that he has some items wrong. Help
him figure out his mistakes by correcting the items
which you think are wrong and changing them to the exact ratio.

ACTIVITY 2

Knowing your Ratio Together

Using Pythagorean theorem, identify the missing side in
the figure below and determine the six trigonometric
ratios using the given mark angle. Show your solution
on a separate sheet of paper. Get in touch with your
group mates, compare, and discuss your answers with
them.
