Class Policy: (1) Absences and Tardiness Rule
Class Policy: (1) Absences and Tardiness Rule
*8 absences (MWF), 6 absences (MF, TTH) (3 *consecutive absences per term is subject to Guidance and
Dean’s office awareness), NO PLACE FOR EXCUSES except: **; ***; ****; *****
****Only for valid reasons with proper documentation can students be EXCUSED from class however, is still
considered ABSENT.
*****Absence from class due to a medical emergency or participation in a University-sanctioned event may
be considered “excused” on condition that the student provide appropriate documentation. Excused remarks mean
consideration from classroom activity, quiz, or examination ONLY. An absence will be considered unexcused without
appropriate documentation. Please note that “excused” absences are at the discretion of the professor and do not
include: making up work for another class, meeting with your advisor, registering for classes, attending housing
meetings, aiding a friend or family member, routine doctor visits, etc. If you make a personal choice to miss class for
these reasons, it will be considered an unexcused absence and you will not be permitted to make up graded work
done in class or hand in late assignments. You may, however, hand in any work before it is due. Arrangements to
make up work will be made for students who participate in University events that require them to miss class
(athletics, field trips, conferences, etc.) provided that those arrangements are made in advance of the missed class
and students provide the appropriate documentation.
******3 instances in arriving late on an hour period is considered absent; 2 instances of tardiness on a one
and a half period is considered absent, … after 30 minutes be considered absent but is still welcomed to attend class
however, with a warning… there is an imputation to behavior.
(2) Practice GMRC (inside classroom, within the campus)
*DO NOT MISS CLASS ON DAYS OF YOUR RECITATIONS, REPORTING AND QUIZZES ESPECIALLY EXAMINATION
PERIODS.
*Student participation is critical for a good seminar. All students are expected to read the assignments in
advance of class, to participate in discussion, and to have data collection exercises completed and available in
class for discussion as assigned.
*I understand that some instructors of UIC are not allowed to base grades on attendance. Nevertheless, I do
not see how it is possible to successfully meet the course objectives without thoroughly preparing for each
class session, arriving to each class session on time and with all the materials needed for that session, and
actively engaging with me and your peers during the session itself. We all have been or still are teachers, so
we know what to do if we have to miss a class, arrive late, or leave early. If you’re not sure what to do, then
ask in advance, not after the fact.
(8) Submit expected outputs ON TIME. Deadlines are the deadliest deadlines.
*No haggling, no extensions unless permitted by the professor. Please try to have your work to me on time.
*Computer/printer problems are NOT a valid excuse to hand in your work late. You will know well in advance
when things will be due, so plan accordingly. I caution you to not leave your work until the last minute.
*Please read about academic honesty in your Student’s Handbook. Work that has been written, corrected and
rewritten, or translated by someone else is unacceptable and constitutes plagiarism. Plagiarists will be placed
under academic sanction and discipline.
