INTRODUCTION
Shopping at the supermarket isn’t necessarily a popular activity for students, but it is a necessary one.
As students grow older, they gain more responsibilities, responsibilities which may include helping with the
family grocery shopping or shopping for groceries on their own. In order to successfully navigate around
the supermarket, though, students need to understand the parts of a supermarket and which items can be
found where.
Supermarket Words features 216 words of items that students may find in a supermarket. Activity pages
emphasize word pronunciation, spelling, phonics, definitions, and identification. A pre/post-test is included
to determine students’ knowledge of supermarkets before and after completing the lessons. As students
work their way through the book and its exercises, they will gain knowledge that will allow them to become
more confident and independent when shopping at the supermarket. Students may find using a dictionary
with some of the activities helpful.
Supermarket Words is written at a grade 3-4 reading level. It is designed for use in grades 4-12.
