Deck Slab - Box Culvert

1) The document describes the structural design of a box culvert with a clear span of 3 meters and clear height of 2 meters. 2) Design parameters like soil properties, live and dead loads are specified. Loads include soil pressure, surcharge pressure from soil above, and wheel loads from vehicles. 3) Detailed calculations are shown for determining earth pressure, surcharge pressure, water pressure, and wheel loads on the culvert. The maximum wheel load of 200kN is reduced based on load dispersion. 4) Reinforcement details and design is based on the Indian Roads Congress code for elastic theory.

Road WC weight = 3.75 kN/m2
(0.15x25x1) Refer Clause 5
Dead load ( per unit area) = 18.75 kN/m2

Calculation of Effective Width of Dispersion

Length of Culvert (ie Road width) b = 5.5 m
Effective span of Slab lo = 3.3 m
Ratio of Width of Slab to Eff. span of Slab b/lo = 5.5/3.3
= 1.667
Constant (From Table IRC 21) α = 2.88 Clause 305.16.2
Distance of centroid of Conc. load a = 1.65 m
Breadth of conc. area of load bl = 0.5+(2*0.15)
0.8 m
Effective width of dispersion bef = αa*(1-(a/lo))+bl
= 2.88*1.65*(1-1.65/3.3)+0.8
= 3.18 m
Centre to centre distance of track = 1.8 m
Net effective width of dispersion for the tracks = 1.8+3.18 m
after allowing for overlapping = 4.98 m
Length of load in vehicle = 3.2 m
Effective length of dispersion = 3.2+2*(0.3+0.15)
= 4.1 m
Effective length of dispersion is greater than the actual span.
Hence intensity of loads needs to be reduced proportionately.
Reduced Load = 228*3.3/4.1
= 183.51 kN
Intensity of load with Train vehicle = (1+0.25)*183.51/(4.98*3.3)
= 14.0 kN/m2
Type of Vehicle = IRC Class A train vehicle

Distance of centroid of Conc. load a = 1.65 m

Effective width of dispersion of one Wheel bef = αa*(1-(a/lo))+bl

Total width of dispersion for 4 Wheels = 8.68 m
Intensity of load under wheeled vehicle = 1.25*200/(8.68*1.05)
