Heat Transfer Operation 1118062019092802 PDF

1. The question describes an experiment where a resin ball at an initial temperature of 27°C is placed in an air stream at 377°C to cure. It asks to calculate the heat transfer rate and curing time. 2. Using heat transfer correlations for a sphere, the heat transfer coefficient is calculated to be 83.69 W/m2K. 3. The heat transfer rate is then calculated to be 25.11 W using Newton's law of cooling. 4. The Biot number is calculated to be 0.71, indicating a lumped system approach can be used. Using the lumped system equation, the curing time is calculated to be 7.1

Final exam 2018-2019 Max. Marks: 100
Examiner: Dr. Hasan Issa Dawood Date: 25 105 I 2019
Answer Only Three Questions lncluding Q4
Ql/ A new experimental resin is being developed for making cannon balls. The resin which is
initially formed into a spherical-shaped ball with a diameter of D =2.54 cm and a uniform
temperatureof 27 oC is cured by suddenly placing it in an air stream with an ambient temperature
of T = 377 "C and an ambient flow velociQ of U =l0m/sec. The fluid properties are calculated at the
ambient temperature, T,. = 650 K_(P.:0.70, o = 5.895 x l0 s m2lsec, k = 0.04845 W/m.K, p,, = 3.19 x
l0-s kg/m.sec and F,, = 1.85 x lO-s kg/m.sec). The properties of the resin can be assumed to be: p, =
2500 kg/m' ; (Cp), = 1100 J/kg.K i k. = 7.5 W/m.K

Q2l Water enters the tubes of a small single-pass heat exchanger at 20"C and leaves at 40nC. On the
shell side, 25 kg/min of steam condenses at 60 nC. Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient anrl
the required flow rate of water if thc area of the exchanger is 12 m2. (The latent heat, h1*, is 2358.7
kJ/kg at 60"C and (Cp)*" 1,, = 417 4 J/kg."C).

Q3/ An electric resistance wire heater 0.0001 m in diameter is placed per-pendicular to an air flow.
It holds a temperature of 40 "C in a 20 nC air flow while it dissipates 17.8 W/m of heat to the flow.
How fast is the air flowing? P.: 0.70; u = 1.596x10-s m2lsec and at T= 30 "C (k = 0.0264 W/m.K).
