Statement of Purpose

Teaching is my interest what I choose as my career option after finishing post-graduation

from IIT Roorkee. It is one noble profession where training and handling different type of
students and facing frequent challenges. In my 3 years of teaching experience (currently
working for NPIU-TEQIP project) I came to know how valuable is pursuing a Ph.D. degree
for any engineering faculty. It is my pleasure applying for Ph.D. to enhance my research
skills while benefiting my academic career.

When I started my graduation, faced so much difficulty with electrical engineering and
especially with programming like C+. But with time I came to know the beauty and the need
of electricity for the modern society living. I am very thankful to my faculty and friends
from IISc-Bangalore who helped me in understanding subject in a better way.

India is third largest producer and consumer of electricity in the world with installed capacity
of 370.11 GW as of Mar-2020 which is expected to upsurge above 500 GW by 2027. Back
in the days, state grids were inter-connected to form 5 regional grids in India that are
Northern, Eastern, Southern, Western and North-Eastern grids which enabled surplus
electricity transfer between states. However synchronisation of all regional grids will help in
optimal utilization of natural resources with the transfer of power while operating at one
frequency. This gave the idea of one nation - one grid at one frequency. These regional grids
inter-connection started back in 1991 when North-Eastern and Eastern grids are
interconnected. By 31st Dec-2013, established one National grid with the inter-connection of
Southern grid to the Central grid. Although initially inter-connected with asynchronous
HVDC back-to-back links, later these were upgraded to high capacity synchronous links.

This Indian power system network is one of the large and complex network in the world.
Growth of meshed network, high variation in power supply-demand during a day,
complexity due to bidirectional power flow, rapid growth in distributed generation are some
considerable aspects on power system. Regular monitoring of this power system is important
to improve system reliability while avoiding large area disturbances that lead to power
outages such as 2012 blackout in India which affected about half of Indian population.
Power system monitoring can achieve optimal utilisation of assets and resources that will
help the power supply-demand imbalances while maintaining system stability. Power
engineers always face challenges in maximising the use of transmission assets while
improving system reliability. The total transfer capacity (TTC) is based on thermal
limitations, voltage limitations or stability limitations of the line. Phasor measurement unit
(PMU) based wide area monitoring systems (WAMS) technology will allow available
transmission capacity based on precise real-time measurements rather than existing coarser
measurement or simulation methods. Thus if once we increase the utilization of transmission
assets, then we can even lower the energy costs to consumers.

Existing SCADA/EMS has ability to provide steady state view of power system with high
data flow latency. SCADA typical sampling is about once in 5 sec. However, WAMS which
acquire voltage, current and frequency measurements from PMU are time synchronised.
Time synchronisation is provided by global positioning systems (GPS) and allows
synchronised real-time measurement at multiple remote points on the grid. PMU can
measure 50Hz AC waveform typically at rate of 48 samples/cycle. Thus PMU based WAMS
helps in analysing dynamic events on the grid which is not possible with traditional SCADA.
WAMS pilot projects introduced in India since 2010. With these WAMS pilot projects
experience, implemented Unified Real Time Dynamic State Measurement (URTDSM)
project which is world’s largest WAMS project. A total of 1444 PMU units installed at 345
substations. Phasor data concentrators (PDC) installed at 32 state load dispatch centres
(SLDC), 5 regional load dispatch centres (RLDC) and at national load dispatch centre
(NLDC).
Power system is highly non-linear in nature constantly changing environment, loads,
generator outputs etc. Transient instability in power system will cause power oscillations.
These oscillations will cause unwanted tripping or mal-operation of distance relays there by
undesired tripping of transmission line circuit breaker. Power swing can be stable or
unstable. Power swing is stable if followed by disturbance all the machines back to
synchronous speed, and unstable if one or more machines not coming back to synchronous
speed there by losing synchronism with rest of system. This power swing must be detected
and proper action must be taken, so conventionally power swing detectors (PSD) used to
distinguish between power swing and faults. PMU information can be used to effectively
differentiate stable power swing, unstable power swing and faults thereby whether to
separate network into islands if necessary.

In B.Tech I/we worked on problem ‘Transient Stability Enhancement using TCSC

Controller’ along with my friends. Work includes simulating model in MATLAB/Simulink
and verifying its behaviour with and without TCSC controller. This is where I learned some
few basics about how to use MATLAB/Simulink and mathematical modelling in Simulink.

My M.Tech projects on high impedance fault and distribution system fault studies. For thesis
work on distribution system protection, I used PSCAD software for simulation of 25 kV
Saskatchewan radial power distribution system. And MATLAB coding was given for
importing each simulated data file one by one to train and test proposed algorithm, there by
10 different type of faults (excluding LLL-G fault) detection and location of the fault is
done. I am very thankful to my M.Tech guide prof. R. P. Maheshwari and my senior Ph.D
students who are a big help at that time in doing my project work.

My strength in my academics is mathematics and self-learning. Some good command on

using simulation platforms like PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink and Spice etc. I am good with
MATLAB coding for problems like load flow studies, fault studies, coding for applying
time-frequency transforms and using Simulink for mathematical modelling etc. Also, while
working for NPIU, it is good experience like faculty training programs on Python
Programming and Machine learning. Apart from electrical engineering, I have successfully
completed and earned badges from cognitiveclass.ai on following courses which will help
me in doing my research:
 Deep Learning
 Machine Learning with Python
 Python for Data Science
