What is ServeUGA?

ServeUGA is a student organization housed in the Center for Leadership and Service that is composed
of a 5-person executive board; 21 general members called Service Ambassadors; and
approximately 40 student organizations that embrace advocacy, philanthropy, or hands-on service as
one of their primary purposes.

ServeUGA's Mission:
The mission of ServeUGA is to promote a culture of sustainable service among the student body by:
fostering educational dialogue surrounding social issues; coordinating service events that engage
students with the local Athens community; and serving as a resource to UGA student organizations
that participate in service, education, and advocacy.

How does ServeUGA promote a culture of service on


campus?
ServeUGA promotes a culture of service on campus by providing one-time and ongoing volunteer
opportunities for students to make a positive impact in the local Athens-Clarke county community.

• One time-volunteer opportunities include: Dawg Day of Service, Interfaith Day of


Service, Homecoming Week of Service, and semesterly awareness events.
• Ongoing volunteering opportunities are available through ServeUGA's Serve Athens initiative.
Through Serve Athens, ServeUGA partners with a small number of local non-profit
organizations for reoccurring volunteering opportunities. Transportation is provided for
students who participate.

Application Information:
• Applications open on November 4th and close on November 22nd, 2019 at 11:59PM.
• You can apply to be a Service Ambassador by visiting https://tinyurl.com/ServeUGA2020.
• If selected to interview, you will have a 30-minute interview between December 2nd-4th, 2019.
• You will be notified if you are selected to be a 2020 Service Ambassador by December 13th,
2019.
Service Ambassador Responsibilities:
• Applicants must commit to serving as a member from January 6th to December 4th, 2020 if
selected.
• Attend a mandatory spring onboarding retreat, held January 18th-20th, 2020.
• Attend all weekly meetings (Thursdays from 5:00-6:00PM) and all committee meetings
• Co-lead a ServeAthens team with one to two other people.
o Co-facilitate an ongoing partnership with an assigned local community non-profit
organization and lead at least three service projects for UGA students each semester.
• Serve on two signature event planning committees.
o Signature Events include the following:
§ Dawg Day of Service
§ Interfaith Day of Service
§ Fall Social Awareness Event
§ Spring Social Awareness Event
§ Spring Service Social
§ Fall Networking Conference & Homecoming Week of Service
• Attend all signature events
• Spend at least three hours per semester (6 hours per year) supporting advertising and
recruitment for ServeUGA through tabling, flyering, presenting, and other activities.
• Hold at least one office hour per week in the ServeUGA office, located in the Center for
Leadership & Service.

Service Ambassador Benefits:


By engaging as a Service Ambassador in ServeUGA, you will be able to:

• Have a better understanding of the Athens-Clarke County community, through describing and
analyzing various social issues the community faces.
• Develop recruitment and leadership skills, as well as further social issue awareness by planning
and implementing large and medium-scale events.
• Recognize the difference between positive and negative social change by engaging and
facilitating in reflection during various service and awareness events.
• Develop effective communication and collaboration skills by working alongside peers and
community partners during their year-long commitment to ServeUGA.
• Differentiate between the types of impact that single-day service events and sustainable,
recurring service opportunities have on volunteers and the community.
