SYNOPSIS

It was a wonderful experience to work in an organization which works for farmers and who is

trying to improve their standard of living. The organization name is “Green Agrevolution Pvt.

Ltd”. This company was established in 2013 who work to improve the farmer’s standard of living

and provide them one stop solution. Green Agrevolution Pvt. Ltd. Works on three things:- Agri-

input, Crop advisory and Agri-output among these crop advisory is free of cost. Green

Agrevoltuion Pvt. Ltd. Provides agri-input to the farmers at cheaper cost than others in the market

at the same time they procure the produced of the farmers and the price which was offered to the

farmers is more than what a normal aggregators offers to the farmers.

I have pursued my internship at Green Agrevolution Pvt. Ltd. (GAPL). Under this I was indulge

in DeHaat which is a sub-brand of GAPL and deals with farmers and retailers acquisition and

maintains a supply chain of agri-input and agri-output products and services.

My internship period was of two months which started from 01st April’2019 and ended on 31st

May’2019. In the first week of internship there was training sessions in which the details about

organization’s structure, working style and area of operations were explained. Basic knowledge of

agri-inputs (seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, etc) and agri-outputs, some information about common

disease of crops and type of lands suitable for different types of crops was shared.

There were many interaction sessions held for giving a clear picture about company’s work and

an intern’s strategies and proceeding to accomplish their task. Like introductory session by Adarsh

Srivastava, AVP, F&V where there were some informal discussions was held about working area

of interest and basic introduction. Session proceeded to the working model of company and

different sectors of working of company which are:

2|Page
1. Agri Input

2. Crop Advisory

3. Agri output

Likewise training sessions were taken by many experienced and talented employees such as

Prashant Kumar, P.C. Mishra, Amrendra Kumar, Nitish Shanker, Dr. K.K Singh, Amrendra

Singhand many more eminent of the company who detailed about basic agricultural terminologies,

demand and supply of farmers and problems of farmers, hierarchical and vertical structure of

company and about setup of a node and DeHaat centre. Came to know about the details of agri

input and output and 3 focus of company for farmer’s which are:

1. Farms Mechanisation

2. Credit Support

3. Crop Insurance

I have also gained knowledge about Agriculture industry and FPOs (Farmers Producer

Organisation). Visit of DeHaat node and centres of Vaishali district was arranged by company for

one day where we met Nodal Managers and DeHaati (retailers), who gave us practical working

knowledge about the company and we also saw agri-inputs and some instruments of company.

This visit was with programme manager and other interns which gave us a better understanding of

company’s work in the same week.

Job allocation was done in the very week and I was allocated Bhagalpur area for the survey of

farmers, retailers and aggregators with the aim to establish a new node/centre in Bhagalpur area.

3|Page
Phase 1- Survey in Naugachia (Bhagalpur)

I was assigned for the survey for a period of one month from 08/04/2019 to 08/05/2019 in

Naugachia block of Bhagalpur where I surveyed 305 farmers, 20 retailers and 15 aggregators

regarding all the necessary details that can be helpful in establishing a new node/centre.

Farmer’s survey was restricted towards their land holding, major crop production, yield, farming

cost, profit, preferred agri-input brand, purchasing and selling point of agri-input and agri-output

along with other crop production and their related problems and farmer’s personal details.

Retailer’s survey was restricted towards their area coverage, customer base, preferred agri-input

brand, types and varieties of agri-input, purchasing and selling point, capital, profit margin, and

profit along with their expectation with a company and their personal details.

Aggregator’s survey was restricted towards their area coverage, farmer’s base, major crops

dealing, purchasing and selling point of crops, profit margin (price paid to farmers and price taken

from company/big aggregators/market), expectation with agri-output company and their personal

details.

These surveys were conducted with the method of Random Sampling which was done manually

by us through personal meeting with each individuals and surveying them based on questionnaire

provided by company along with some required improvement in the questions wherever required.

In this I have surveyed 33 villages by taking a sample of 8-12 farmers from a village.

Phase-2 Areraj (East Champaran)

Accomplishing our task of Bhagalpur I was allocatedAreraj block of East Champaran (East

Champaran) for two weeks to promote DeHaat in that region among farmers and retailers and

4|Page
understanding the agri-output i.e. procurement process. The main motive was to understood the

basic working model of the company by being indulge in agri-input as well as agri-output.

I promoted DeHaat between retailers by meeting them personally and explaining them the

company’s working model and the process to be a part of DeHaat and offer them to become a

DeHaat centre of the new establishing branch/node. The promotion among retailers was done by

personal visit and oral communication. The promotion of DeHaat among farmers was done by

personal visit as well as by conducting two public speaking in which there were 30-40 farmers in

each meet. Here I used convenience sampling, random sampling and stratified sampling for our

methodology. I also conducted focused group discussion among local people to better understand

the mind set of local people.

Beside promotion I was also indulge in procurement process of Maize and Wheat in which we had

to compare rates of both crops from different aggregators and large farmers. I also understood the

procurement process in detail by visiting West Champaran (Bettiah) node, where procurement was

a continuous process from last 4 years. Finally with support of other team members we managed

to procure a truck of Maize (25 ton) which was procured at the rate of Rs. 1790/quintal from Laxmi

Trader, an aggregator of the same locality which distant to about 5 Km from the new node and

transported them to Hajipur.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

11 | P a g e
Farming is called the backbone of Indian economy as around 70% of India’s population is

dependent upon agriculture for their livelihood. Even after such a huge contribution of

agriculture sector in many areas like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh farmers are facing different kinds

of problem like which variety of crop should be cultivated, what should be the perfect time to

harvest the particular season crop, and also decision related to selection of fertilizers, pesticides

and manure. One of the main problem that farmer faces is that they are not getting the correct

price of their produced and due to lack of warehouse they have to sell their produced output at

much lower cost to the aggregators.

This report is the reflection of the my 2 month internship that I have completed and it is also a

main component of my summer internship program that I have to submit in Chandragupt

Institute of Management Patna. This internship was started at Green Agrevolution Pvt Ltd a

young organization that deals in agriculture products. It deals in mainly three things ie: Agri-

input, Crop advisory and Agri-output. Objective of my internship is to conduct survey among

farmers in nearby villages of Naugachia (Bhagalpur) to analyze whether that area is suitable to

open a Dehaat node or not and in my second part of internship the objective is to promote Dehaat

in Areraj (East Champaran) and to know the basic procedure of procurement process that was

started by us with the help of Dehaat team in that area. When internship has started I have set

some goals that I have achieved during internship and the goals were-

• Learn how to interact with farmers

• To understand the main problems in villages regarding farming

• To enhance my skill and knowledge for a bright career

12 | P a g e
This report is a reflection of the activities that I have performed during this 2 month internship. A

set of instruction was given by the company upon which I have to work on. First I had to conduct

survey in Bhagalpur district with my partner Satyam to analyze the findings whether Naugachia

area (Bhagalpur) is suitable to open a Dehaat node or not and in second phase I had to promote

Dehaat in Areraj (East Champaran) among retailers and farmers and also we have to understand

the procurement process of maize and wheat in that area.

13 | P a g e
CHAPTER 2: OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY

Topic assigned: Scope of node in new areas (Bhagalpur and East Champaran)

This internship was a challenge for me as we have to interact with farmers and the main

challenge in this was that farmer’s rarely trust on a new company for any kind of product

because farming is the main source of their livelihood and any kind of risk can lead to loss of

their crop. When we started survey in the villages of Naugachia block in beginning we have

faced many problems like communication gap because of the language they speak ie Angika so it

is a little difficult for us to understand every things that they speak. The problem of how to

explain them about the Dehaat as I mentioned that farmer’s do not trust on the new company so

they sometimes became hesitated while answering the questionnaire so to cope up with this

problem we started to question the farmer’s without any questionnaire in hand for this we

memories every question of questionnaire and whenever we are in front of farmers we first

introduce Dehaat and how it works and then started asking question which was in questionnaire

and they also started answering the question without any hesitation.

Some of the farmers were interested in Dehaat offerings and some seems to be very reserved

regarding this. The procurement of maize, wheat and banana were taken place in those villages

and the farmers will have to sell their output at less price to the aggregator than the price of

market so we also tell them about Dehaat procurement procedure and the expected benefits that

they will get and many of them convinced to sell their output to Dehaat if they open node here.

We also survey some of the main retailers of Naugachia block and try to know the brand of

products that they are selling. Ask them about different companies product that are available at

their store and which brand has more demand. In Areraj (East Champaran) we promote Dehaat

14 | P a g e
and try to convince the retailers to connect with Dehaat and make their shop as Dehaat centre

and also we tell them about the benefits that they will get after connecting with Dehaat.

Relevance of the Study: Business Need

This project is very important from the business point of view to Green Agrevolution Pvt Ltd.

They are planning to open Dehaat node in Bhagalpur and East Champaran in 2019 and they are

mainly focusing on selling of agri-input and procurement process from those areas. This project

will give a basic highlights to the organization that what are the merit and demerit of opening the

Dehaat node in that area. With the help of this projectorganization will come to know what are

the areas that they have to work upon and in which area they are going to get benefit. Also this

project is on analyzing the scope of Dehaat node in new areas so in future whenever organization

is planning to open a node they will also look upon this project report and can take some useful

information. This project is also relevant for understanding the mindset of farmers that under

which circumstances a farmer is switching from one brand to another if they have been offered a

valuable product than previous one. For a farmer price is nothing if the product is of good

quality. This project is also helpful in understanding the procurement process of different areas.

The price of procurement, quality of output that is to be procured and price fluctuations of output

like maize which changes everyday. This project also help the organization to achieve its

financial goal to achieve Rs 21crore revenue in financial year 2019-20 as Bhagalpur and East

Champaran both have potential farmers and if company is able to cover only half of the surveyed

farmers then only from Bhagalpur they can earn revenue around Rs 50lakh.

15 | P a g e
This project is also helpful to grow business in that area as the data of retailers and distributors

were also provided to the organization which help them to know the strength and weakness of

the competitor.

The objective of the study:

➢ To survey the farmers in Naugachia Block of Bhagalpur to know whether this area is

suitable for Dehaat node.

➢ To analyze the different types of crops that area grown in Naugachia block

➢ To know the yield of maize and wheat in Naugachia block as the company is mainly

focusing procurement of maize and wheat from that area.

➢ To analyze the find outs from the survey for the scope of opening a Dehaat node.

➢ To Promote the Dehaat in Areraj (East Champaran) as the new centre is going to open

that area within a month.

➢ To understand the procurement process of maize and wheat in Areraj.

➢ To start the procurement of maize and wheat in Areraj.

➢ To meet different aggregators in Areraj to know the procurement price of maize and

analyze the best price and procure the maize

➢ To meet farmers and retailers of Areraj and tell them about the benefit of Dehaat that they

are going to get if they connect with Dehaat.

Scope of the work:

➢ Introduction in agriculture sector

➢ To interact with farmers and retailers in Naugachia block.

➢ To ask farmers about the problems that they faces while farming.

16 | P a g e
➢ To interact with retailers and tell them about the Dehaat (working, structure and aim)

➢ To visit fields of farmer to check which type of diseases are there in crop and which

pesticides or insecticides can be used to remove those diseases.

➢ To meet farmers and retailers of Areraj block for the purpose of Dehaat promotion

➢ To interact with aggregators for the purpose of procurement of maize and wheat.

➢ To know the price of maize and wheat in Areraj block.

➢ To start the procurement process in Areraj block.

➢ Understanding the quality of maize while purchasing it from the aggregators

➢ Check the quality of wheat that are going to be procured

17 | P a g e

Agrevolution Pvt Ltd. It helps farmers from the time of sowing to harvesting. Dehaat has one

head office which is in Patna and one corporate office which is in Gurugram. Under head office

there are total 9 Dehaat nodes. A Dehaat node is a office which acts as a controller of Dehaat

centre. The work of Dehaat node is that to ensure whether there is sufficient quantity of stock of

seeds, fertilizers, manure and pesticides available in Dehaat centres to meet the demand of the

farmers. Dehaat node also provide funds to Dehaat centres whenever it is needed.

Under each Dehaat node there are 19 Dehaat centres and distance from one Dehaat centre to

another Dehaat centre is 5-6 Km of that area. Dehaat centre is operated by a person called

Dehaati who sells agri-input to the farmers and also involves in procurement of agri-output. Now

farmers are connected with Dehaat centres and each Dehaat centre is having connection with

approx 600 farmers who are now becoming a brand loyal.

20 | P a g e
CHAPTER 4: LITERATURE REVIEW

21 | P a g e
In Indian economy agriculture sector is one of the most important sector. It accounts 18% of

India Gross Domestic Product. More than half of the country workforce is employed in this

sector. With an aim to open Dehaat centre in Bhagalpur and East champaran I did some research

regarding the problems that are faced by different organization in opening agriculture centres.

Problems that many organization faces are trust issue farmers generally do not trust on new

organization entering in this field because agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the

farmers and they do not want to take risk. Another problem they face was the perfect area to set-

up as many organization finds problem in deciding the area in which they have to open the centre

because area should be not far away from the reach of the farmers and should be somewhere in

middle of the block so that distance from different villages of the centre is less. modes of

transportation is also one of the major problem that organization faces. The area in which

organization is going to set-up their centre should have the the route of transportation because if

the centre wants to necessary resources then those resources can be made available to them

easily and quickly. Selection of local for the management of centre is also a problem that

organization faces. Selection of employee is a major decision for every organization and in agri-

business the employee that an organization is selecting should be the local one because he knows

many things about the local market and even they also have prior connections with farmers as

well as retailers. The employee should be trustworthy.

Fasal (Start-up 2019)

22 | P a g e
An artificial intelligence start-up named Fasal was started by two young brains Ananda Verma

and Shailendra Tiwari. The main motive of Fasal is to help farmers in increasing their

productivity with the help of technology like Internet of things. In the report of the Fasal it is

mentioned that for first few months fasal was running on pilot mode. Fasal mainly work on

different types of crops testing, soil testing, seeds selling and advisory Initially they have

surveyed farmers from different villages of Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Fasal

is also working for the betterment of farmers and trying to increase their yield. The report also

mentioned that while surveying the farmers they also tried to ask the farmers other problems like

irrigation facility provided by government or their output selling point etc. It can be said that the

GAPL and Fasal is almost same. The only difference in these two organization was that GAPL is

not using IOT(Internet of things) technology in their business model but Fasal is using IOT in

their business model. The information regarding survey in Fasal is almost same as they have also

collected data regarding Land holding of farmers, Annual income from farming, age of farmers

etc. One difference that I found in their survey technique was that they are interested in genuine

problems of farmers other than the questions mentioned in questionnaire like irrigation facility

by the government or whether they are provided MSP (Minimum Support Price) for their output.

In the report of Indian Streams Research Journal which is on the topic “A study of Agriculture

Inputs Marketing in India” by Parthasarathi Senapati it is clearly mentioned about the marketing

of agriculture produced and agriculture inputs like fertilizers, manure, pesticides etc.

In this report the 4 Ps of marketing is defined in terms of agriculture products

• Product Strategy- To prepare a product strategy for a farmer is one of the most difficult

task. Product should be easy to use and should not be complicated while using. Product

23 | P a g e
should be packed well and should look attractive to the customer. Packaging should

contain easy instruction language.

• Price strategy- Pricing is one of the main strategy. In rural area farmers are price

sensitive. The price should be set according to the area and whether farmers of those area

can afford the product at that much price or not

• Place strategy- Level of channels and network is very important in the agriculture input

distribution system. The place should be convenient for the farmers so that they don’t

have to spend more on transportation for purchasing of agriculture input

• Promotion- To promote one should interact one to one with farmers or they can also use

pamphlets. One should use positive word of mouth so that farmers will have trust upon

the product that you are selling to them.

Our survey is also based upon some points as we have surveyed and suggested the organization

about the quality of product that should be maintained, price of product that should be

affordable, place of product that will be convenient for the farmers and promotion after the node

set-up so that every farmer will be aware about Dehaat and start using its products. Johnston and

Mellor in 1961 have said that income and population growth are the main reasons for increase in

commercial demand of agriculture produce. It is due to productivity, improvement in production,

post harvesting processing and distribution system which result in increasing marketed supply.

Brithal et al in 2007 state that art technique can be used to build efficient and effective supply

chain by this you can serve to both population and the farmers, by giving valuable food to

population and remunerative price to farmers for their produce. Tripathi and Prasad in 2009 said

that contribution of structural change in Indian agriculture is one of the main contribution for the

progress of Indian agriculture. Ramkishen in 2006 said that farmers are not getting good price for

24 | P a g e
their produced output because there is lack of food processing and storage. They have to sell the

output at the price which was fixed by aggregators. Pathak in 2006 state that agriculture sector

growth including growth of products is one of the main reason for the growth of a nation.

CHAPTER 5: METHODOLOGY

25 | P a g e
Research Design was used is descriptive research and Sub Research Design is survey,

questionnaire. I have surveyed 305 farmers regarding their land holding, income, types of crop

they grow etc. A questionnaire was prepared by us with the help of Head HR of the organization.

These questionnaire consist of different type of questions like Age of farmer, Mobile no, Land

holding. Income, Type of crop they grow etc. Source of Data is Primary Data Primary data was

collected by surveying the farmers. These data were collected to analyze the useful finding for

the purpose of opening Dehaat node. Type of sampling technique used is Simple Random

Sampling. The sampling technique that was used is simple random sampling because I have

given equal chance to each farmers to participate in the survey. I have visited every village of

Naugachia block and selected a sample of 6-7 farmers from each village. Sampling unit are

Farmers. Sample size is 305 Farmers

CHAPTER 6: RESULT ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

26 | P a g e

• Common disease of crop in Naugachia area are black insect (Banana), Green insect and

drying of roots (Maize)

• Average land holding by farmers were 8 bigha and yield of of Maize is 35-40 quintal/

Bigha and Wheat is 15-20 quintal/bigha.

• Rate of procurement :
Crop Farmer’s Price Market price

• 67% farmers have phone.

East Champaran (Areraj)

• The major crops are Maize and Wheat.

• There is hardly any difference between price of agri-outputs of farmers and aggregators.
• Market distance is close to node.
• The place of Areraj node is in the middle of the block (distance is close from nearby
villages).
• Harsiddhi, a village distant to 10 Km from node is a hub for agri-input as well as agri-
output market.
• Retailers show a positive response to join DeHaat.

• All of the agri-input retailers we met were having all sort of required licenses.
• From the last one year no new retailers are getting license for opening an agri-input retail
shop.

85%

Figure-1

• Figure 1 shows that 85% of farmers sell their output to aggregators for which they

receive 1300/ quintal for maize, 1000/quintal for wheat and 200/ bunch for bananas.

Therefore it can be concluded that if company purchases output direct from farmers by

offering them a higher price than aggregators then farmers will be ready to sell their crop

as they will receive more for their output.

Figure 2

• Figure 2 shows that 67% people uses phone which means that a major portion of sample

is using phone and can be in touch with our organization for the details related weather,

Maize and
Wheat
90%

Figure 3

• Figure 3 shows that 90% of the farmers are sowing maize and wheat. It can be concluded

that these two crops should be targeted by the organization and the organization should

focus on producing good quality seeds of these two crops so that it will give a excellent

yield to the farmers and trust of the farmers will be on the Dehaat brand. Along with

quality of seeds organization should also focus on the diseases of these two crops and

prepare a pesticide so that it will cure those diseases.

• Average annual spending of farmers on Agri-input is INR 36,542. Lets suppose that if the

organization is able to attract half of the sample taken then they will earn a great amount

of revenue from Naugachia block. It means if 150 farmer will start purchasing Dehaat

products then 150*36542= Rs 54,81,300. Organization will earn Rs 54 lakh revenue from

Naugachia block.

Analysis-Areraj

• As we have promoted Dehaat in Areraj so we came to know that farmers and retailers are

showing a positive response towards idea of Dehaat and retailers are ready to join as

Dehaat centre.

• Procurement of maize and wheat is easy in Areraj as the node of Dehaat in Areraj is in

middle of the block so the distance between different villages and node is not so far.

Transportation cost to procure agriculture output is affordable.

• Nearest node from Areraj node is Bettiah node so if there is lack of stock in any of the

node the fulfillment can be done from Bettiah node.

• Harsiddhi, a village distant to 10 Km from node is a hub for agri-input as well as agri-

output market. So this will help the organization to sell their procured crops easily and at

a reasonable price.

• All of the agri-input retailers we met were having all sort of required licenses.

CHAPTER 7: LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

• Every farmer we surveyed did not having mobile phones, the reason is either they were

not aware with mobile technology because of their old age or they do not want to adopt

the mobile technology because of risk and fraud.

• Many farmers did not wanted to participate in the survey as they were least interested for

any change that are going to place in that area.

• Some farmers get hesitated when they are asked about their land holding and annual

income due to which we have taken some of the figures on assumption as said by the

farmers.

• In some villages of Naugachia language is the main problem as they did not understand

hindi and Bhojpuri they are familiar with Angika language and I personally do know

Angika language so due to this there was a communication gap between me and the

farmers.

• Green Agrevolution Pvt Ltd. is a new organization that was going to set-up node in

Naugachia block so many farmers have trust issue as they have not listened the name of

the brand earlier.

• Some of the farmers thought that we were from government organization so they start

complaining us about the drawbacks of government which somewhat deviate us from the

main motive.

CHAPTER 8: CONCLUSION

I can say that Dehaat is working for welfare of the farmers in different part of Bihar and UP.

Currently there are 9 nodes of this organization 7 in Bihar and 2 in UP are working very

smoothly. With an aim to open its node in Bhagalpur and East Champaran organization they

have sent me and my partner intern to these to place to survey and to check whether these area

are suitable to open a Dehaat node or not.

With all the finding and analysis I can say that Naugachia block of Bhagalpur and Areraj block

of East Champaran is suitable for opening a Dehaat node because there are many finding which

are in favor to open the node that I have mentioned in finding and analysis section. If

organization will open node in these two area then it will be beneficial for the farmers as well as

for the organization. I have learnt many thing during these two month of internship. There are

various kinds of problems that farmers face in their day to day life & we cannot solve all their

problems but we can provide them a good price for their output and provide them with good

quality of products which they can use in their farming.
