1. With neat block diagrams explain closed loop operation of Induction motor drives.

2. Derive the speed and torque expressions for a three phase semi controlled converter
connected to a separately excited dc motor. [16]
3. Draw and Explain Speed-torque characteristics of semi converter feeding a sepa-
rately excited D.C motor. [16]
4. A 220V, 190A dc series motor has armature and field resistance’s of 0.03 and 0.02
ohms respectively. Running on no load as a generator with field wining connected
to a separate source it gave following magnetization characteristics at 500rpm.

Motor is controlled in dynamic breaking by a chopper provides control of duty ratio
from 0.05 to 0.95

(a) Calculate breaking resistor so that maximum breaking speed at the armature
current of 190A will be 750 rpm
(b) Also calculate the maximum allowable motor torque for a speed of 70 rpm
with breaking resistance as calculated in (a). [16]
5. Draw a suitable circuit diagram and explain the working of slip - power recovery
scheme using commutatorless Krammer drive. [16]
6. Explain the principle of operation of self control of synchronous motor fed from
VSI source. [16]

7. A pump has a torque speed curve given by Tc = 10 3 N ,N w − m.It is proposed

to use a 240V, 50Hz , 4 pole y-connected Induction motor with the equivalent cir-
cuit parameters (referred to stator). R1 = 0.25Ω, R2 = 0.6Ω, x1 = 0.36Ω x2 =
0.36Ω xm = 17.3Ω . The pump speed N is to vary from full speed 1250 rpm to 750
rpm by voltage control using pairs of Inverse-parallel connected thyristors in the
line. Calculate range of firing angles required. [16]
8. Explain with block diagrams closed loop torque control and closed loop speed con-
trol of drives. [16]

1. Explain static motor resistance control for speed control of I.M. Draw speed &
torque charecterstics. [16]
2. Mention the reasons:
(a) Why V/f ratio is maintained constant when the motor is operated below the
base speed.
(b) Why the terminal voltage is maintained constant, when Induction motor is
operated above base speed. Draw relevant speed torque characteristics. [8+8]
3. Derive the speed and torque expressions for a three phase fully controlled converter
connected to a separately excited dc motor. [16]
4. What are the advantages of electric breaking over mechanical breaking of D.C. mo-
tors? Explain with proper circuit diagram Speed-Torque characteristics of D.C
motor under dynamic breaking, for the following types:
(a) Separately excited dc motor

5. Draw the Speed-torque characteristics at a different firing angle for a full converter
feeding a separately excited D.C motor. [16]
6. Discuss in detail about the stator voltage control scheme of Induction motor. Draw
and explain the speed torque curves pertaining Stator voltage control. [16]
7. A 230V, 960rpm and 200A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance
of 0.02Ω. The motor is fed from a chopper, which is capable of providing both
motoring and breaking operations. The source has a voltage of 230V. Assuming
continuous conduction: When motor is operated in Dynamic breaking, with Brak-
ing resistance of 2 ohms
(a) Calculate Duty ratio of chopper for a motor speed of 600 rpm and breaking
torque of twice the rated value
(b) What will be the motor speed for a duty ratio of 0.6 and motor torque equal
to twice its rated value? [16]

series motor using chopper control under

5. Describe the application of static frequency converter feeding an a.c motor for
starting and acceleration purposes. [16]

6. Discuss briefly the various methods of controlling the speed of the 3 Phase Induction
motor from stator side using solid state converters. [16]

7. A 220V 60A dc series motor having combined resistance of armature and field of
0.15Ω is controlled in regenerative breaking mode. The dc source voltage 220v.motor
constant is 0.05.The average motor armature current is rated and ripple free. For
a duty cycle of 50% determine

(a) The power returned to the supply.


(b) Minimum and maximum permissible breaking speeds
(c) Speed during regenerative breaking. [16]

8. A 3 phase, 440 V, 6 pole, 970 rpm, 50 Hz, Star connected Induction motor has the
following parameters referred to the stator.
Rs = 0.2 ohm, Rr ’ =0.15 ohm, Xs = 1.5 ohm, Xr ’= 4. The stator to rotor turns
ratio is 3.5.ohm.The motor speed is controlled by Static Scherbious drive. The
drive is designed for a speed range of 30% below the Synchronous speed. The max.
value of the firing angle is 1700 . Calculate

(a) The turns ratio of the transformer

1. What is a Chopper? Explain the Chopper control of a D.C series motor.

2. With a neat diagram, explain the operation of a dc drive in all four quadrants when
fed by a single phase dual converter with necessary waveforms and characteristics.

3. Draw the circuit diagram and explain the operation of rotor- resistance control
using chopper. Mention the advantages and disadvantages of the above method of
control. [16]
4. (a) Starting from fundamentals prove that torque developed by the Induction
motor is proportional to square of the supply voltage.
(b) Draw the speed torque curves for different voltages fed from stator voltage
controller. [8+8]
5. (a) What is a self control mode of Synchronous motor?
(b) Draw and explain the block diagram of a self controlled synchronous motor
fed from a three phase inverter. [8+8]
6. Explain the Speed torque Characteristics of a dc series motor connected to a three
phase fully controlled converter. [16]
7. With neat sketch and necessary waveforms explain how continuous current opera-
tion is obtained with single phase full controlled converter fed to separately excited
D.C drive. Also derive output current and voltage expressions. [16]
8. A three phase four pole 50 Hz Induction motor has the stator and rotor parameters
as shown below:
R1 = 0.05 Ohm, R2 ’ = 0.09 Ohm,
X1 = 0.35 Ohm, X2 ’ = 0.35 Ohm.
V =440 V.
The stator is star connected. The motor operates on a variable frequency variable
voltage supply such that V /f is constant. The motor drives a load with a torque
given by T1 = 0.009 wr 2 Nm where wr is the rotor speed in radians per second.
Determine the operating speed and torque when the motor has supply frequencies
of 5 Hz and 25 Hz. [16]
