Panchānga Calendar - 2010
Preface
Panchangam: Panchangam provides five basic elements of astrology, Tithi (lunar day or time taken by moon to move 12 degrees), vaara (a day from sunrise to sunrise),
Nakshtra (the Zodiac constellation in which the moon is found on particular day), yoga (half-day) and karana (angle between sun & moon). These are the main aspects calcu-
lated according to the Solar, Lunar, and earth positions. These five elements play an important role in calculating the muhurthas (auspicious days) for any Hindu rituals.
There are three prevalent methods of calculation for Panchangam used in different parts of India. Souramanam (Solar calendar - prevalent in Kerala and
Tamilnadu), Chandramanam (lunar Calendar - prevalent in Andhra, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and other states of North India), Baarhaspatyamaana
(Jupiterian calendar -which is said to be prevalent in North India).
Panchangam in India and US: The lunar movements calculate Tithi and Nakshtra, the main limbs of Panchangam. When one tithi or Nakshatram begins
and ends, it happens at the same instance all over the world, which is called universal time. After correcting for the time zones, the Tithi and Nakshatram will
begin/end on different local timings in different parts of the world. Since India has little variation in terms of sunrise/sunset, Panchangam computed for one
area of the country is generally applicable to the other parts of the country aswell. But when it comes to other parts of the world same universal time should
be translated into the corresponding local time in terms of the longitude and latitude. As North America(Pacific Time zone) is 13 ½ hours away from the In-
dian Standard Time, it is not appropriate to use the calendar, prepared for Indian local time. Keeping these aspects in mind, our astrologers and scholars
prepared Panchangam calculated to our local time, i.e. PST & PDT and the calendar brought to you with all accurate calculations and timings of all festivals
and auspicious timings to be used in Pacific Time zone. In the current Calendar we put all efforts to provide as many details as possible. For other details,
i.e. Rahu kalam, varjyam, dur-muhurtham and accurate muhurthas, please consult our scholars, personally or through Emails. Daily use of this calendar
helps the conscientious person to understand and monitor the prevailing planetary forces of every day.

Accuracy of attributes depending upon Moon's motions were considered most crucial for the reliability of a panchāngas, because Moon is fastest among all
heavenly entities shown in traditional panchāngas. Tithi, Nakshatra, Rāśi, Yoga, and Karana depend upon Moon's motions, which are five in number. There
are three popular meanings of the term panchānga. (Vedic astrology) meaning "five attributes" of the day. These are:
Tithi - Ending Moment(EM) of elongation of the Moon, the lunar day , the angular relationship between Sun and Moon (True Moon minus True Sun). One
Tithi equals 12 degree difference between Moon and Sun.
Nakshatra - EM of asterism of the day, that is, the stellar mansion in which Moon is located for an observer on Earth. One Nakshatra equals 13 degrees:20
minutes. There are 27 Nakshatra in 360 degrees.
Yoga - EM of the angular relationship between Sun and Moon (True Moon plus True Sun). One Yoga equals 13 degrees:20 minutes. There are 27 Yogas in
360 degrees.
Karana - EM of half of a Tithi. One Karaṇa equals 6 degree difference between Moon and Sun.
Rasi - the signs or Rāśi - EM of the sidereal sign of the zodiac for the Moon.
Tithi: The tithi is the longitude of the moon minus that of the sun. First tithi (prathama) begins when tithi is 0° and ends when it is 12°; 12° to 24° is dvitiya,
24° to 36° is Tritiya etc. 168° to 180° is Poornima; 180° to 192° is Dark fortnight Prathama 192° to 204° is Dvitiya.etc. 348° to 360° is Amãvãsya. So, there
are 30 tithis -15 are called suddha paksha (Bright ForTiruight or waxing phase) the other 15 bahula paksha (Dark fortnight or waning phase).
The tithi of a day is usually taken to be the tithi current at sunrise on that day. Since the moment of sunrise is not the same at all places it is to be noted that
occasionally a tithi current at sunrise at one place may not be current at sunrise at another place. It is also possible for a particular tithi to be current at sun-
rise on two successive days. So when two successive days have the same tithi associated with them, the 1st day is called Tridina. It is also likely that a tithi
may begin after sunrise and end before the next sunrise. In such a case a tithi is skipped over and that day is called AVAMA.
The concept of good timing is provided by this calendar and one can take advantage of auspicious moments by avoiding when the creative forces of this
planetary system are on the wane.

On behalf of Sri Satyanarayana Swamy Devastanam, I wish you
233. Venkata Ram & Gayatri Rajanala all a “HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!” Since we started
234. Venkata Sudhakar Simhadri this Temple in April 2007, I am taken a back that it has reached so
many Hindu people of the Bay Area this in such a short period of

time. Your co-operation, dedication, and generous donations towards
236. Venkateswar rao the improvement of the temple are very much appreciated.
237. Venkatrao Konatalapalli As a temple committee president I would like to bring up important
information: I assume that several of you are aware that the current

place where we are is not enough to meet the increasing religious and
239. Vijay & Sangeetha spiritual demands of the devotees. Furthermore, we have been get-
240. Vijay K / Renuka Chavva ting the consistent feedback and suggestions about the permanent

and a convenient place for the temple. As a reply to the feed back,
the temple committee had identified an ideal place with a transfer-
242. Vijaya L Thammineni / Janardana C able religious permit. It is conveniently located for all parts of the
243. Vijaya Nagineni / Suneel N Alam bay area, in Milpitas, adjacent to Indian Community Center.
244. Vijayaram & Bhargavi Manda
I thank the various people who have contributed $300K towards the
building fund so far, yet we need $250K to close the escrow before
245. Vimala Vemuri January 2010.
246. Vinay K Vidyala I solicit you to donate generously to this divine cause, and it would be
247. Viswanath Dhulipala
exceptionally helpful to let your family and friends know about it.
Suggested donation amounts: $216, $516, $1116 or Amount of your
248. Suryanarayana / Laxmi Duggirala choice.
249. Suman / Haritha Madadi I once again thank you all for your generous donations. I also wel-
come everyone to give their valuable suggestions to make this temple
250. Praveen / Vasundhara Dulam a great place of cultural devotion.

Humble Note
PRELIMINARIES –ABOUT YOU - DEVOTION- FAITH- DUTY.
Devotion and faith come across the humanity in multifarious ways. The moment you turn up in the TEMPLE, you assume
that you are a devotee! ARE YOU REALLY DEVOTED TO ANYTHING? The first thing that crops up is – whether you
turned up in the temple by accidental coincidence, like the event occurred somehow. Or is it on account of an auspicious –
time proclaimed to be so on account of faith or a declaration drawn from a printed calendar material-which you possess
now.
The thinking process is the first that has to be cultivated as your routine with self-discipline attached. Whatever philosophy
teaches about attachment and detachment – they are not catch words to be uttered outwordly to proclaim your personality.
The fact that you are able to sustain through some activities is by God’s grace. God’s grace is not a marketable commodity.
It is achieved by your own devotion focused on the matters at issue.
We should be proud of the vedic scholars and their enunciations to make things easily happen. However, self effort stands
above all.
Without ‘you’ nothing can be achieved. You are the primary participant. When anybody else sees you you should portray
yourself with radiance of good thoughts, deeds not proclaiming about them by yourself but by leaving the matters to others
judgment.
Always think that there are persons opposing you. It is not by developing enemity you achieve your goods.
In Latin – RES IPSA LOQUITUR means that things speak for themselves. Duty thrust on you stands as an obstacle in
many times. You have to surmount the difficulties by your efforts in proper direction.
Keep an objective to bring your enemy as your friend. Then you are a great person in real life.
The Panchangam is well-explained calendar with details of important dates and auspicious times for all occasions espe-
cially calculated and compiled for North America’s west-coast time zone.
The Panchanga Calendar in your hands, now should be held by you with accomplished values cultivated.
Rome was not built in one day. Sri Marepalli Venkata Sastry, stands as a pillar for his determinations proclaimed, enunci-
ated and achieved. You should be part of a team to achieve anything and only one person cannot do everything. Coopera-
tion and coordination are additional virtues to be developed and your presence in the temple or activities associated with
the Sri Satyanarayana Swami Devasthanam are itself of great value not only to yourself but to the HINDU community and
there by the community around you at large with similar faiths and beliefs.
If you become a partner to unify all your activities with good thoughts and similar contributions, persons around you will
trust you and the multiple of trust so cultivated by all will stand as a firm pillar to speak about us all.
Humble Devotees
Tamirisa Rama Krishna Apparao & Tamirisa Krishnaveni
