Analysis Persepolis

This fragment analyzes Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel Persepolis through the lens of literary devices and symbolism. It describes a scene where gender inequality is depicted through the separation of men and women in university classrooms. The analysis notes the irony in the government attempting to control natural human behaviors like relationships. Symbols like Marjane's black clothing represent the oppression people faced, while differences in male and female dress styles highlight the lack of freedom for women. Smoking represents both adulthood and the social deprivation women experienced under such rules. Overall, the fragment examines how Satrapi used this scene to portray the social injustices faced by women in Iranian society at that time.

Analysis Persepolis

Write an analysis of the fragment. Keep in mind symbolism, imagery, allegory and all the
features studied so far (literary devices- key features and content). 800 – 1000 words

In this fragment of the text, Satrapi creates an allegory between the inequality present in
Iranian society during that time and the one present in the graphic novel as men and women
are treated differently just for the gender. In the fifth panel, women and men are divided in
university and most probably, men will have a better education than what women will. On the
other hand, the author shows the way relationships worked at that time and how the law or
religion, imposed who women could date or fell in love with as shown in the fourth panel; “Do
you think we can tell people we’re dating? -Are you crazy? Not in your life, if the
administration discovers our relationship, we'll be kicked out! To them we’re breaking the law”
This dialogue between Marjane and her boyfriend is ironic as love is something that people
cannot control and the fact that the government is trying to control something natural and
even biological, is ironic. Also, the caption of the fifth panel that says “This didn’t stop them
from throwing each other flirtation looks. Naturally, after all, law or no law, these were human
beings.” shows the irony presented by Satrapi when writing this fragment.

On the first panel, the background is white and Marjane’s clothes are black, representing the
oppression that people had to go through as they had to follow all what the law said and had
no liberty of deciding most of the things. The last panel shows how women are all wearing the
same with the veil and very similar clothing while men are all shown wearing different shirts
showing that although they do not have complete freedom, is much more than the one that
women have.

The cigarette that Marjane is holding on the second panel is a symbolism as it represents
adulthood and mature behavior that is supposed to be done after a certain age and with
responsibility. However, this is also an irony as it shows that women can smoke but cannot
choose who to date or what close to wear showing the limitation in the freedom they have. On
the other hand, it also shows the way that they could get to the same level as men and that
fighting and being consistent might bring them the freedom they want and desire. In addition,
studies have shown that smoking is highly related to social and/or economic deprivation which
is something that Satrapi wants to show through symbolism and portray the social problems
she had to go through.

In conclusion, this fragment from the second book of Persepolis explains mostly the social
injustices that Marjane had to go through during her first day at university and the way the
context she lived in did not determine she was less than a men or that she could not be an
author who she finally became.
