b) Submit a design response with the Tender proposal, to include all profiles of typical conditions,
with dimensions.
c) The Tender design response shall include:
i) Samples where specified.
ii) List of Tests included.
iii) QA/QC programme.
iv) List of proposed Working Drawings.
v) Summary of deviations from the Specification.
vi) Outline technical specifications reflecting proposed materials/systems.
vii) A list of proposed suppliers and sub-contractors intended to be used.
Samples, Mock-ups, Prototypes and Quality Benchmarks
N26.1304 Mock-ups
A mock-up shall be provided in accordance with Section A.4000 as follows:
Extent and location of mock up to be agreed with the CA.
N26.1305 Prototypes
A prototype shall be provided in accordance with Section A.4000 as follows:
a) Allow for an inspection of a similar installation of a smoke curtain or provide a prototype of each,
which when accepted can be incorporated in the works.
N26.1404 Movements
a) The works shall be designed, fabricated and installed to withstand all movement of the building
structure without damage or detriment.
b) Note the requirements of the Structural Movement and Tolerances Report prepared by the
Structural Engineer.
Fire
Refer to the Fire Strategy Report.
N26.1405 Classification
It shall be ensured that the works are classified as ‘materials of limited combustibility’ as defined in
the Building Regulations. The works shall also have a Class 1 rating when tested in accordance with
BS 476: Parts 6 and 7.
N26.1407 General
The works shall be suitable for the intended use and perform satisfactorily for the full design life.
N26.2100 SYSTEMS
N26.2101 Type SPE-01 Smoke Curtains
Fire resistant fabric smoke curtains on motor activated steel roller systems with curtain casing/head
box enclosure and electronic control equipment, concealed within suspended ceiling system fitted at
finished ceiling level below the service zone as indicated on the design drawings. System to include
treated solid hardwood panel above finished ceiling level with fire resistant board behind as indicated
on the design drawings. Hardwood veneer to match appearance of timber screen IWS-01. Smoke
curtain side guide rails to be incorporated to IWS-01, refer to section H11. Ensure smoke tight seal
between curtain casing, adjacent construction and around services where they pass through the
hardwood timber panel as specified herein. Refer to section Z10 for timber joinery.
a) Fabric:
i) The curtains’ fabric shall comprise satin weave glass fibre with a special aluminium
reflective coating to provide 1 hour fire resistance and ½ hour integrity at 1000° C (to BS
476: Part 20). Colour to be confirmed by CA.
ii) A weighted bottom bar shall be attached to the foot of the fabric, which will recess into
the shadow gap (as indicated on the Design Drawings) of the suspended ceilings when in
the retracted position and shall aid gravity fail-safe during descent and control curtain
deflection when in operation.
iii) Fabric shall be tested as part of the complete assembly in the orientation and standard
use of their application and installation and shall comply with the requirements of BS
7346: Part 3 and the FR test for prEN 12101: Part 1.
b) Finish to Visible Metal Elements:
i) PVDF coated standard RAL colour. Refer to section Z32.
ii) Sample to be accepted.
N26.2200 MATERIALS
N26.2201 Framework
a) The secondary framework shall be PVDF coated mild steel supplied by the manufacturer of the
smoke curtain, to suit their system. All fixings to visible areas shall be agreed prior to
manufacture.
b) Where Site welding is required it is to be by the process known as manual metal arc fusion
welding and is to be carried out by welders tested in accordance with BS EN 1101. Welds are
to be continuous utilising material and techniques suitable to the sections being assembled.
Weld finishes shall be smooth where they are visible.
c) All fixings shall be of sufficient strength for their purpose.
d) Fabrication and erection tolerances shall be as follows:
i) Horizontal alignment shall not exceed + 0 or -3mm per 3.6 metres. This shall be non-
cumulative from the set datum line.
ii) No single piece part shall be out of alignment with any other single piece part by more
than 1mm per metre run when viewed vertically, horizontally, or laterally.
N26.2203 Metalwork
Where possible, metalwork assembly shall take place in properly equipped workshops with sitework
restricted to fixing.
N26.3100 WORKMANSHIP
N26.3101 General
Install the works in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
N26.3102 Workmanship
a) All workmanship shall be of a high standard using fully proven practices.
b) The setting out of the works shall be accurate and in accordance with the Design Drawings. All
dimensions shall be checked on site prior to manufacturing and any discrepancies notified. The
setting out of the works shall ensure that in all cases they are square to the building grid unless
otherwise indicated on the Design Drawings.
c) All joints within the works shall be horizontal or vertical, with all edges and joints square, unless
otherwise indicated on the Design Drawings.
d) The Contractor shall be responsible for ensuring that any moulding deflections and distortion
characteristics are allowed for in the pattern making so as to achieve the finished form indicated
on the Design Drawings.
N26.3103 Materials
Use materials, fixers, sealing and finishing materials that satisfy current environmental legislation and
do not give off emissions of any sort that may be considered harmful. Also, replacement should not
cause harm or nuisance to the building users.
