Vanilla

This document outlines a procedure to determine the amount of vanilline in a sample of vanilla essence using conductometry. It involves titrating the sample with a standard sodium hydroxide solution and measuring the conductivity after each addition. A graph of conductivity versus volume of sodium hydroxide added is plotted and used to determine the volume needed to neutralize the vanilline. Calculations are then shown to find the percentage of vanilline in the original essence sample.

AIM: To determine the amount of vanilline in sample of vanilla essence by condutometry.

REQUIREMENTS: Vanilla essence, 0.05 N KHP soln., 0.05 N NaOH, conductometer, burette,
pipette etc.

REAGENT: Sample of vanilla essence, 0.05 N KHP, 0.05 NaOH soln.

Observation:
[A] Std. of NaOH
Burette : 0.05 N NaOH soln
Flask : 10 ml 0.05 N KHP soln
Indicator : Phenolphthalein
End point : colorless to pink.

Observation table:

Normality of NaOH:
N1V1= N2V2
N1 = ‘X’ * 10
B. R.
= ______ N NaOH (A)

[A] Actual Experiment :

Burette : ___ (A) N NaOH soln.
Flask : 25 ml diluted soln. of vanilla + 25 ml D.W.
Conductivity of distill water _____ S

Observation table:
Sr. No. Conductance of Correct conductance = Specific conductance
solution conductance of solution –  = Correct conductance * cell

Procedure:
1. First std. 0.05 N NaOH soln. using 0.05 N KHP using phenolphthalein indicator.
2. Now take 5 ml of vanilla essence into a 100 ml volumetric flask and make it up to the
mark using double distilled water. take 25 ml of this diluted solution of vanilla essence
in a small beaker add 25 ml water in it and dip conductivity cell into it and measure
conductivity.
3. Now add 1 ml of 0.05 N NaOH soln., shake well and note conductivity. Repeat every
time up to about 20 ml of 0.05 N NaOH.

GRAPH:  vol. of NaOH.

CALCULATION:
From Graph
Vol. of NaOH for vanilla = 10.0 ml
1000 ml 1 N NaOH = 152.0 g vanilla
‘Y’ ml N NaOH = 152 *A *10.0
1000
= ________ g (B)

25 ml diluted soln. contains ____ (B) g of vanilline

Therefore, 100 ml solution contains B * 4 = ______ (C) g of vanilline

% of vanilline in vanilla essence = C * 100

5
= ______ %
RESULT:
1. Percentage of vanilla in essence = _____ %.
