1.0 INTRODUCTION
It’s well-known that increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables is good for you. A
review of studies in an article written by Montalto (2015) has shown that eating five or more
servings of fruits and vegetables a day can decrease the risk of stroke by 26%, as well as
reduce the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Montalto also stated that there was
another study done suggests that the antioxidants in fruit and vegetable juices may play an
important role in delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
The more fruits and vegetables you take, the greater the benefits. But it can be difficult for
some people to consume the recommended five or more servings in one day. This is because
they do not enjoy eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Juicing or blending fruits and vegetables into
smoothies may be a fun and easy way to get your daily servings in. Smoothies are a fairly low-
effort method to include more raw vegetables and fruits into your diet. Moreover, the making of
smoothies can also include other beneficial foods, such as protein and healthy fat. That way, they
can replace a meal if you like.
Juicing, or juice extracting, is a process where the liquid part of the fruit or vegetable is
separated from the pulp, or fiber. While blending, the whole fruit or vegetable is used: what you
put in the blender is what you consume. Either way, they will definitely ease the user and shorten
the time taken to produce a healthy smoothie. Now, no excuses can be made as you are one step
towards a healthy lifestyle!

1.1 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PRODUCT
Juicing fruits and vegetables for health has been going on for so long, but nowadays the
influence of advertisement on various platform has bring the trend into the mainstream. Majority
of people start juicing as part of a diet plan, for decontaminating the digestive system or to
recharge nutrients after an illness. However, the main benefit of juicing is that it’s one of simple
way to start consuming healthier foods you may not have ate otherwise.
With so many different juicing products on the market, it’s easier than ever to take advantage of
these health benefits. If you are serious about juicing, understanding on how juicers work is one
of the keys to selecting a good juicer. When you have an understanding of how these juicers
work, you can save money by not having to buy the juicer that does not suit your needs. While
some people might recommend you to use a blender instead of a juicer, you will find it very
difficult for you to separate the pulp from the liquid and it can be a messy process with a blender.
In simple terms, juicing refers to the process of extracting juice from fruits and vegetables. The
modern juicing trend usually refers to centrifugal, masticating and triturating juicers.

fruits or vegetables. Usually, this process is aided by a stainless steel mesh screen. Once a
produce is inserted, the auger then crushes it and juice flows directly into a bowl or cup at
the bottom.

From our previous proposal, we proposed the Robot Coupe J80 ULTRA model as the best
model. However, after we took some aspects into consideration, we decided to choose the third
model which is Pensonic PJ-57 as our product. Based on Table 1, we made comparison between
three products by taking their power, rated voltage, weight and their features into consideration.
From the market review the customers will definitely choose this product instead of the other
products. The reasons are:
ii. Lightweight
Weighting in at less than 5 kilogram, this product has the most lightweight design.
iii. Features
The model features stainless has a steel filter to extract the juice and a pusher for better
juice extraction. It also has an anti-slip rubber feet to reduce the vibration effect during
the juice extracting process.
As the name implies, juice extractor is used to extract juice from different kinds of vegetable and
fruits. It is a convenient and nutritive product that can be utilized along with the massive
awareness of clean and healthy eating. Our mission is to improve the design of the juice extractor
into a more agronomic design to the user that provide less work and energy to move the juice
extractor easily.

2.2 FUNCTION DIAGRAM
INPUT OUTPUT
i. Principle of Centrifugation:
The working principle of our product ‘Pensonic PJ-57’ is, it relies on a high-speed
centrifugal juicer which chop the fruits or vegetables with cutting blade (grater). It
simultaneously spins at a very high speed to separate the juice and the pulp. Among the
three juicer types mentioned earlier, centrifugal juicers are the best because it has large feed
hopper, allowing user to put in bigger vegetables and fruits. Thus, it helps in reducing the
prepping time. At very high speed, this juice extractor does the job extremely fast as it only
took not more than 1 minute to obtain a glass of fresh juice.
9
this juice extractor, the blade did not stop that instance. Instead, it takes up to 2 minutes to
completely stop.
iii. Pascal’s principle:
According to Pascal’s principle, pressure transmitted is undiminished throughout the fluid
and the walls of container. This principle is applied to the situation where the user inserts the
vegetables or fruits in to the feed hopper, the pressure at the feed hopper is equal to the
pressure at the spout.

2.6 PROBLEM STATEMENT
As we were discussing and analyzing this product, we came across to a problem that this
product was not provided with handle. Our chosen product ‘Pensonic PJ-57’ with the weight
of 3.50kg, is not a handy type of machine which is hard to be moved from one place to
another place. Therefore, we proposed some solutions which are adding a side holder (refer to
Appendix 1), upper holder (refer to Appendix 2), and a holder with wheels (refer to Appendix
3). Handle will be the place where customer can put their hands on while and lifting the
product. By providing handle, customer can carry the product much easier without having to
put more effort on carrying it. Meanwhile by adding the wheels, it will lessen the customer’s
effort to move the product around. Hence, to solve this problem few modifications were
suggested to increase the efficiency and reliability of the product.
We took an approach of an early design concept; this approach provides direction for everyone
on the project team and gave the big picture idea for the project. This make all future decisions
easier. Our objective is to develop the cheapest possible juice extractor with many features as
possible. The develop product need to be affordable to every household, and not too expensive
Four different conceptual designs were developed with a set of criteria. Design #1 is the
datum, the original juice extractor before improvements (Pensonic PJ-57). #2, #3 and #4 are
the proposed design concept, the product we develop. Design #2 is the juice extractor with the
side handle. Design #3 the juice extractor with upper handle and Design #4 is juice extractor
with wheels. The weights are within the range of 1 to 4. Which 4 is the most important, while
1 is the least taken into consideration. The engineering characteristics are the criteria which
need to be taken into consideration.
13
The scores are determined as below:
S = same
+ = higher
– = lower
Total score is summing the number of the scores given on each engineering characteristics. The
score given is solely based on our objectives.

5.0 DISCUSSION
As the requirement for the course Computer Aided Design (MEC435), we were assigned to
conduct a mini design project. In order to fulfil this requirement in our coursework, we have
chosen a juice extractor as our product in this project. However, before we came to the
finalisation, we first shortlisted some products based on our desired criteria. In our project, we
decided to take food process as our main concept. The main idea for this concept is the
efficiency of the product in processing food for the customer. Some of the related products
have been discussed with mutual respect on the same concept such as juice extractor, blender,
coffee grinder and baby food mixer. All of them depends on the same concept which is food
process. Then, comparison between the products had been made in order to choose the best
product among them all. During the finalisation, we decided to choose juice extractor as the
best product to be chosen in our project. After choosing juice extractor, we listed down some
possible problem statements that may occur to the customer that lead to the production of this
product. We gather information and researches were made about the product. Basic information
such as its function, features and parts are the main component in our product.
Although from the market feedbacks that we found, most of the customers reviewed that this
product is helpful and conventional to be used but there are also some critical reviews from the
customers. Based on these customers’ critical reviews, we identified the limitations of this
product and discussed on how to improve the product for a better use. Some improvements and
modifications have been decided on this product. Firstly, we decided to put handle or wheels on
the product to ease the customer to move the product from one place to another. Since the
product have a high weight, it might be burdened to the customer to carry or move it around.
We also thought of providing speed control variation into the product because in the available
product, there is no speed control button which can help customer to control the speed of the
blade. By putting such option into the product, customer can control the product speed
corresponding to their likely and thus they can control the power consumption. Unfortunately,
we are unable to provide the speed control feature due to the complexity of the feature.
18
We decided to use Pugh Method as our as concept selection. Based on Table 4 of Pugh concept,
juice extractor with side holders reached the highest weighted overall score compared to the
other two modifications thus we modified the product according to this suggestion.
6.0 CONCLUSION
At the end of this report, it can be concluded that Pensonic J-57 had been chosen as our product
in the requirement of MEC435 project. The main concept that we are looking to in this project is
food processing. Some problem statements had been discussed so that solutions can be obtained.
In order to get exposed insights to the product, we used the medium of internet to do researches
on the specifications of the product. Important aspect such as features, functions and parts have
been described in our report to give extra understanding about the chosen product. Other than
that, we were also intended to make some improvements and modifications into the available
product based on the customers’ critical reviews. The modifications made are to meet the
customers’ needs.
