COMPARATIVES & SUPERLATIVES

Comparatives
Use the comparative form of adjectives to focus on a difference between people, places and things.

 Add the suffix ER to the 1 – 2 syllable adjective + THAN


 If the adjective ends in Y, change it for I, add the suffix ER + THAN

Tall = Taller than Old = Older than Pretty = Prettier than Funny = Funnier than
Young = Younger than Lucky = Luckier than Big = Bigger than Nice = Nicer than

I am luckier than you. / My doll is prettier than your horse. / Peter is taller than John and his brother.

 Irregular comparatives
Good = Better Bad = Worse Far = Farther
Dan is better player than John. / My colors are better than yours. / I got worse grades than you. / John’s house is farther
than yours.

 Write MORE (+) or LESS (-) before 3 syllable adjectives or longer + THAN

MORE comfortable THAN / LESS intelligent THAN / MORE amazing THAN / LESS interesting THAN

The black chair is more comfortable than the red chair / That movie was less interesting than my TV show

 Comparing with the same characteristics (adjectives with 1, 2, 3 or more syllables)

*Write AS before the adjective and AS after the adjective

AS comfortable AS / AS tall AS / AS intelligent AS / AS old AS / AS lucky AS / AS young AS / AS amazing AS

Superlatives
Use the superlative form of adjectives to single out people, places and things from other people, places and things.

 Write THE before the 1 – 2 syllable adjective and add it the suffix EST
 If the adjective ends in Y, change it for I, add the suffix EST

Tall = The tallest Old = The oldest Pretty = The prettiest Funny = The funniest
Young = The youngest Lucky = The luckiest Big = The biggest Nice = The nicest

I am luckier than you / My doll is prettier than your horse / Peter is taller than John and his brother

 Irregular comparatives
Good = The best Bad = The worst Far = The further

Dan is the best player in the team / I got the worst grades in the school/ John’s house is the further house of all

 Write THE MOST (+) or THE LEAST (-) before 3 syllable adjectives or longer

THE MOST comfortable / THE LEAST intelligent / THE MOST amazing / THE LEAST interesting

The black chair is the most comfortable chair / That movie was the least interesting movie in the festival

VERB TO CAN
The verb CAN is used to express skills and permission. It also used to express the ability and possibility of someone to
do something.

+ CAN - CANNOT / CAN’T ? CAN  Simple tense

COULD
COULD is the past form of the verb CAN. We use COULD to express possibility or past ability as well as to make
suggestions and requests. COULD is also commonly used in conditional sentences as the conditional form of CAN

* Could = Modal auxiliary - express possibility  Extreme rain could cause the river flood the city (podría)

We use BE ABLE to talk about ability, most of the time, in combination with others auxiliaries
