Dear Mr. or Ms. Employer,

First Paragraph: Introduction (1-2 sentences):

Explain why you are writing. Identify the position for which you applying. If you have a contact
within the organization or you have been referred to the position by someone, start the letter as
follows:
Ms. X suggested that I contact you regarding the position of _____.

posting). Show your enthusiasm for the position and be specific about why you are interested in
working for the organization.

Ms. Tanya Schwartzman

Sharon Music Academy
112 N. Main,
Sharon, MA 02067

Dear Ms. Schwartzman,

In response to your school’s job posting on the NEC Bridge website, I am writing to apply for
the position of piano instructor at the Sharon Music Academy. As a professional pianist with
extensive experience teaching children and adults, I am enthusiastic about the possibilities of
teaching at your school. I am enclosing my résumé in support of the position.

I started a private teaching studio in New York City teaching piano to beginning children and
adult students while doing my undergraduate degree at the Juilliard School. Since arriving in
New Haven 2 years ago, I have taught 4 secondary piano graduate students at the Yale
School of Music and 4 undergraduate piano students at Yale College. I have also coached
two Yale undergraduate chamber music ensembles and have a part-time position at The
Hamden Hall Country Day School teaching piano to middle school students. In addition, I
have taught middle school students in the New Haven Public Schools as part of Music in the
Schools, the community engagement program at the Yale School of Music.

My performance experience includes solo recitals, chamber music and orchestra. I have
given solo recitals in New York at venues including Alice Tully Hall, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art and the Morgan Library. I also have extensive chamber music experience with a
number of student ensembles at Yale and at Juilliard and attended the Norfolk Chamber
Music Festival last summer. I have also performed concerti with Yale Philharmonia and the
Juilliard Orchestra. I anticipate graduating with a Master of Music in Piano Performance
degree from the Yale School of Music in May 2014.

I am passionate about teaching music to children and adults of all levels and welcome the
opportunity to join a community-minded organization like the Sharon Music Academy as a
piano instructor. I look forward to hearing from you about the position.

Sincerely,
Patty Pianist
