Corrosion Under Insulation

CUI is localized corrosion that degrades carbon steel or low alloy steel piping and equipment when the temperature is between -5°C and 150°C. External water enters insulated systems through breaks in the insulation, causing CUI. Sources of water include rain, leaks, condensation, cooling towers, and deluge systems. CUI is most severe between 60°C and 120°C, and units near cooling towers or with cycling temperatures are highly susceptible.

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI)

CUI is localized corrosion which causes degradation of piping/ equipment material when
Carbon Steel or Low Alloy Steel is the Material of Construction and when the service
temperature is in the rage from -5 oC to +150 oC.
External water enters an insulated system mainly through breaks in the insulation system
and causes CUI. The insulation system damage/ imperfections can be a result of
inadequate design, incorrect installation, mechanical abuse, or poor maintenance
practices. Sources of water may include rain, water leaks, condensation, cooling water
tower drift, and water from deluge systems.
Though CUI occurs in the range mentioned above but it is more severe in between +60
o
C to + 120 oC where the environment becomes more susceptible to CUI.
Units located near cooling towers and steam vents are highly susceptible to CUI, as are
units whose operating temperatures cycle through the dew point on a regular basis
