Assignment (1) RCD

This document provides the results of a linear elastic finite element analysis of a perforated shear wall subjected to various load combinations. Key results include: 1. Tables of normal and shear stresses at the centroid of elements for different load combinations. 2. The minimum required compressive strength of concrete is 36.71 MPa based on the maximum shear stress and assumption of isotropic reinforcement. 3. Tables showing the reinforcing ratio and bar spacing in each element, with the maximum ratio found in element 1 under the 0.9G + Wu load combination. 4. The conclusion states the minimum concrete strength and that the reinforcement was designed for each element based on the different load combinations, with the maximum in element

Linear Stress Analysis

Assignment-I
Q.1. A perforated shear wall is shown in Figure-1. The wall is 175 mm thick and it is subjected to the
Dead load (including self-weight), Live load and lateral Wind load. A linear elastic finite element (FE)
model of the wall was developed and analysed to determine the distribution of stresses within the wall.
The FE mesh and element numbers are shown in Figure-1. The stress vectors at the centroid of elements
are given in Tables 1 to 3. All stresses are given in relation to the local x-y coordinate system of the
elements (see Figure-1). For normal stresses, - is compressive stress and + is tensile stress. For the sign
of shear stress, please refer to week 2 lecture.

Use the finite element results to determine the minimum required compressive strength for concrete and
design the non-flexural member based on linear stress analysis method. Assume that the wall is
isotopically reinforced with two layers of orthogonal N16 mesh, and determine the reinforcing ratio and
maximum spacing of the N16 bars in each element based on linear elastic stress analysis method.

Note: The adopted ductility demand for elements should not exceed 15o . Steel yield strength fy= 500
MPa. Note: Only consider the combination of actions related to dead G, Live Q and wind Wu load. The
wind load should be considered with both + and – signs.

Note: Please look at clause 2.2.3 and Table 2.2.3 in AS3600-2018 for the steel and concrete capacity
reduction factors, i.e. s and c.

Table-1: The stresses induced in the wall due to nominal Dead load (Permanent action)

Table-2: The stresses induced in the wall due to nominal Live load (Imposed action)

Table-3: The stresses induced in the wall due to nominal Wind load

3. Design Methodology (Assuming isotropic reinforcement) –
4. Calculation of Reinforcement in each element (assuming isotropical reinforcement)-

Table V- For 1.2G - 𝑾𝒖 + 0.4Q Load Combination

Table VI- For 1.2G + 1.5Q Load Combination

5. Conclusion-
• The Reinforcement is calculated in each section of the member as per the different load
combination. And finally, the load combination of 0.9G + 𝑊𝑢 in element 1 displays the
maximum reinforcement ration as per the methodology.
• The minimum compressive strength of the concrete member is calculated using two
assumptions, i.e., :(Ѳ= pi/4) which gives 2𝜏𝑥𝑦 = 𝑓𝑐𝑑 and assuming isotropical reinforcement,
and finally Maximum of both is selected which gives minimum compressive stress as 36.71
Mpa for the the load combination 1.2G-Wu+0.4Q.
