TECHNICAL SKILLS
PROJECTS/WORK EXPERIENCE
Transparent antennas for mmWave 5G applications based on copper grid patterns aligned with the
display pixel pitch on flexible glass
Binghamton University CAMM, 2018 - Present
· Achievement: Designed 5G antennas and antenna arrays based on copper grid patterns aligned with electronic
displays’ pixel pitch on a 100 µm Willow Glass to achieve high transparency in the visible wavelengths. The
MIMO antenna array’s radiation pattern is omnidirectional with greater than 65% radiation efficiency, and with
isolation of MIMO antenna array calculated from envelope correlation coefficients (ECC) predicts by ANSYS
HFSS.
· Methods: The copper grid antenna is designed and fabricated on one side of the substrate. The linewidth of the
grid can be adjusted accordingly to meet the pixel pitch dimensions of the display resolution. The transparent
grid antenna array can be fed with a single source with power divider circuits or can be individually fed to
achieve multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) systems. MEMS true time delays can be incorporated into the
feed structure to steer beams in a specific direction. The anti-reflective coatings design is also integrated with the
transparent grid antenna to minimize reflections of electronic displays.
End-fire beam steering Vivaldi antenna array for mmWave 5G applications on flexible glass and
ultra-thin ceramic substrates
Binghamton University CAMM, sponsored by Corning Inc., NY. (S.C. Pollard, M.H. Huang, S.M. Garner, and
C.B. Daly), 2018 - Present
· Achievement: Designed a directional Vivaldi antenna array on Willow Glass and flexible ceramic substrates
for 5G wireless systems to achieve radiation gain greater than 10 dB with mutli-band resonant frequencies. The
radiation efficiency is greater than 60% of a 1 × 4 array structure.
· Methods: Impedance matching and feedline stub tuner for a Vivaldi slotline. MEMS true time delays can be
incorporated with Vivaldi antenna array’s feed structure to steer beams in a specific direction.
Transparent antennas for wireless systems based on patterned indium tin oxide and flexible glass
Binghamton University CAMM, sponsored by Corning Inc., NY. (S.C. Pollard, M.H. Huang, S.M. Garner, and
C.B. Daly), 2015 - present
· Achievement: Designed 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz ISM bands antennas with indium tin oxide on a 100 µm Willow
Glass. Radiation efficiencies were achieved 75% for 5.8 GHz antennas and 60% for 2.4 GHz antennas. The
HFSS simulation and the measured return loss and radiation gain have quantitatively good agreement which the
deviation is less than 100 MHz. The average transparency of the antenna was 81% in the visible wavelength range.
The ITO antennas’ transmission range is at least 200 meters.
· Methods: Designed a unique feeding structure and a modified patch-like radiator shape to improve radiation
efficiency and radiation gain.
