The words they choose tell readers what the character looks like and also give an idea of the type of person he or she is. Read this description of a woman written by Australian author Jackie French. It is from the book The Secret Beach (HarperCollins, 1994). The writer has used interesting words to describe what the woman looks like, where she is and what she is doing. A woman was watching, hands on her waist. She was thin, with knobbly knees and elbows, her hair was sun-bleached, almost to the colour of sand, and was tangled and tossed by the wind. Her feet were bare, but tough and flattened-looking, as if they were often bare, not just for the beach. Her hands were long; the skin looked lizard-thin and very brown, Write a description of the boy in this picture. Imagine who he is, what he is like and the things he likes to do, * Introduce your description by telling the reader about the boy. Choose words that make the reader want to find out more about him. * Use interesting words to describe the sort of person he is. * Remember that you are describing a character, not telling a story. * Use the hints on the other side of this page to help plan your writing.
