CLE3007: Traffic Engineering

The document outlines student projects for a traffic engineering course. Students will complete projects analyzing either an existing road intersection or road corridor section. The projects involve collecting and analyzing traffic data, evaluating current performance, and developing recommendations to improve traffic conditions. Students are evaluated based on submitting group and individual reports, and doing a presentation on their findings and recommendations.

CLE3007: Traffic Engineering

List of Student Projects

Expected Outcomes: At the end of this project, the student will be able to
 Collect traffic data necessary to analyze traffic operations at a roadway intersection
or on a road corridor (due to COVID situation, he/she may not have a chance to go to
the field)
 Analyze traffic data to solve a given problem such as design traffic signal timing, find
whether a signal is warranted etc.
Problem 1: Evaluate the performance of an existing traffic intersection and develop
measures for improving the performance.
Each team (Group of three) chooses one intersection near their home
Task 1: Describe the intersection:
a) Draw a neat sketch with correct scale
b) Show and describe the land use surrounding the intersection
c) Describe the traffic movements in general (what type of vehicles are moving, what
are their origin-destinations, general observations, Patterns of pedestrian movement)
Task 2: Prepare a data collection plan:
a) List the data to be collected (volumes, speeds, delays, pedestrian movements, etc.)
b) Prepare a schedule of data collection
c) Justify why the above plan is appropriate for your study
Task 3: Collect data and analyze: (If going to the field is not possible, dummy values can be
taken)
a) Go to the field and collect data
b) Summarize and present in tables, figures etc.
c) Summarize traffic parameters such as speed, volume, capacity, delay, level of
service, pedestrian delay, etc.
d) Write the summary of performance of the intersection
Task 4: Develop measures to improve performance
a) List measures such as operating a new traffic signal or roundabout, modifying signal
timing, modifying geometric design (ex: putting new traffic islands), putting pedestrian
signal etc.
b) Prepare detailed design for two or three of your proposed measures. For example, If
you suggested operating a traffic signal, prepare signal timing plan; if you proposed
pedestrian signal, prepare operation plan for that, etc. Prepare AutoCAD drawing
showing traffic signs and pavement markings at the intersection.
c) Write summary of your recommendations – may include other general methods to
improve traffic conditions – ex: encouraging improvement in driver behavior,
enforcement of traffic rules etc.
Problem 2: Evaluate the performance of a section of an existing road corridor and
develop measures for improving the performance.
Each team (Group of two to three) chooses one road section near their home
Task 1: Describe the road section:
a) Draw a neat sketch (because the section is long, you have to show use different
scale for width and length). You can do it on paper, in Excel or any other platform.
b) Show and describe the land use surrounding the road
c) Describe the traffic movements in general (what type of vehicles are moving, what
are their origin-destinations, general observations, speeds, pedestrian movement
etc.)
Task 2: Prepare a data collection plan:
a) List the data to be collected (volumes, speeds, travel time, delays, pedestrian count,
pedestrian delay etc.)
b) Prepare a schedule of data collection
c) Justify why the above plan is appropriate for your study
Task 3: Collect data and analyze: (If going to the field is not feasible, dummy values can be
taken)
a) Go to the field and collect data
b) Summarize and present in tables, figures etc.
c) Summarize traffic parameters such as speed, volume, capacity, delay, level of
service, pedestrian delay etc.
d) Write the summary of performance of the road section
Task 4: Develop measures to improve performance
a) List measures to improve performance (ex: modifying geometric design, traffic control
devices, pedestrian facilities etc.)
b) Prepare detailed design for two or three of your proposed measures. For example, If
you suggested modifying geometric design, draw the new geometry. Prepare
AutoCAD drawing showing traffic signs and pavement markings along the corridor.
c) Write summary of your recommendations – may include other general methods to
improve traffic conditions – ex: encouraging improvement in driver behavior,
enforcement of traffic rules etc.
Problem three: Preparation of spreadsheets or software for one of the following
procedures:
Capacity and Level of Service estimation based on Indo HCM
Signal timing Design using IRC or standard methods
