Chapter 2

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses how this study was undertaken. It

includes the research design utilized, the research locale and

the respondents of the study, the choice of respondents as well

as sampling procedures. This also includes the research

instruments used, the data gathering process, and the data

analysis.

Research Design

The study employed the descriptive research due to the nature and

purpose of the study.

The word descriptive itself referring to, constituting or

grounded in matters of observation or experience. From which it

involves the description, recording, analysis, and interpretation

of the present nature or the composition of phenomena.

It is defined as a research method that describes the

characteristics of the population or phenomenon that is being

studied. Hence, this methodology primarily focuses more on the

what of the research subject rather than the why of the research

subject. In other words, it describes the subject of the

research, without covering why it happens in the first place.

In addition, descriptive research attempts to collect

quantifiable information to be used for statistical analysis of

the population sample. In this method, none of the variables are

influenced in any way. It is generally a cross sectional study

where different sections belonging to the same group are studied.

The information collected from the responses of the respondents

can be statistically presented in this type of research method

for the easy interpretation of the data gathered.

In this manner, descriptive research is viewed as the most

appropriate way to be used in describing and validating this

research. Using this method will yield to proficient and

effective data gathering and interpretation in an orderly and

systematic matter. More so, it will certainly determine the

student's satisfaction about the library services of General De

Jesus College 2018-2019. In return, improved informative

materials and services will be enhanced in order to reach the

student's foremost satisfaction about the Library of General De

Jesus College.

Research Locale

The study was conducted in the high school department of General

De Jesus. It was named in honor of General Simeon de Jesus, San

Isidro's hero who was executed by the Japanese in Fort Santiago.

General De Jesus Academy was founded by the prominent citizens of

the town, namely: Paz Policarpio-Mendez, Soledad Medina,

Francisco Narciso, Teofilo P. Abello and Ricardo Odulio.

The academy was established in June 20, 1946 in a rented building

which was the former residence of the Moreno family. It started

with seven teachers, including the principal and 255 students

from first year to fourth year.

From 1946 to 1977, the school operated only the academic

secondary course. In 1978, the school board, heeding the appeal

of parents who could not or doesn't have enough money to send

their children to Manila or Cabanatuan City for college

education, opened collegiate department. And the first course

offered during school year 1978 to 1979 was Liberal Arts, and as

years pass by they continued to open several courses til 1991.

In 1992, the Pre-School and the elementary department started

serving the community, and continued to grow.

And after 50 years of service to the youth of San Isidro and

nearby towns, General De Jesus Academy came to be known as

General De Jesus College. The Securities and Exchange Commission

(SEC) approved the change in status on August 28, 1997. With

great excellence as one of its core values, General De Jesus

College strives to maintain the quality education and service it

offers to its clientele.

The school's philosophy is:

The development of a morally upright, civic-minded and

useful citizenry is the responsibility of any educational

institution.
The school's vision:

General De Jesus College as a leading learning institution

in where every learner is transformed into a God-loving and

highly-productive citizen responsive to the local, national

and global needs.

The school's mission:

General De Jesus College is committed to produce graduates who

are instilled with nationalistic, moral and spiritual values and

who are equipped with life and career competencies.

Core Values, Discipline, Integrity, Excellence for God and

Country.

Sample and Sampling Procedure

The type of sampling procedure used in this study is the

simple random sampling which is a form of probability sampling

technique. It could be more accurately called a randomly chosen

sample. Random samples are used to avoid bias and other unwanted

effects. With this type, the respondents were chosen randomly.

The researchers randomly chose 25 participants in every section.

Bueno (2016) defined simple random sampling as any form of

sampling where, in advance of the selection of the sample, each

member of the population has a calculable and non-zero chance of

selection. The relative chance of selection of any two members of

the population is not affected by knowledge of whether a third

member has or has not been selected.

The distribution of the respondents in each section is

presented in Table 1.

Description of the Respondents

The respondents of the study were different grade level

students of General De Jesus College during the school year 2018-

2019. They were asked for their consent and approval to answer

the questionnaire and test that the researchers gave them which

supply the information the researchers need.

Data Gathering Procedure

The selected respondents were given questionnaire and word

decoding test. The first part of the questionnaire sought to

provide the personal information about the students. The second

part sought to provide information about the resources and

collections of the library and its effect to the students’ level

of satisfaction about the library services. The third part is

sought to provide information about the physical set-up and

environment of the library and its effect to the students’ level

of satisfaction about the library services. The fourth part aims

to provide information about the human resources of the library

and its effect to the students’ level of satisfaction about the

library services.

Data Gathering Instrument

The instruments used by the researchers were questionnaire

and word decoding test.

1. The Questionnaire

The questionnaire was designed by the researchers after

consulting various literature and studies. After making the first

draft, this was presented to their adviser for critiquing. The

suggestions given by the research adviser served as the basis in

writing the preliminary which is composed of three parts.

Part I contains the profile of the students which includes the

respondents’ sex, age, number of years visiting the library

number of hours staying in the library per day, and frequency of

visiting the library per week.

Part II focuses on the resources and collection in the

library.

Part III includes the infrastructure of the library. Its

set-up and environment.

Part IV focuses on the human resources of the library. It

includes the services of the librarians in the school

library.

The students were asked by the researchers to answer the

questionnaire and test sincerely and religiously. They were

assured that their answers will be treated with utmost

confidentiality.

Validation of the Instrument

A letter of request and permission was written and given to the

office of the principal of the school and the other personnel

concerned to give the researchers the permission to do their

research in their school. The researchers prepared the

questionnaire anchored on their experiences, reading of different

books, related literatures and other sources. The draft was

prepared and presented to the adviser for comments and

suggestions.

Administration of the Instruments

The researchers undertook several steps in gathering the

data needed. Before administering the questionnaire to the

respondents, the researchers made a letter of request and

permission to the principal and a letter to the respondents. Upon

the approval of the request, the researchers personally

conducted the distribution and administration of the research

instruments with the help of English teachers. The respondents

were informed about the purpose of the study, the content of the

questionnaire and test, and the necessary instruction on how they

should answer it.

They were assured that their personal identities would not be

revealed for them to freely express themselves on the test and on

the questions. Sufficient time was given to the students to

answer, after which the researchers collected the word decoding

test and questionnaires from the respondents. The data obtained

were carefully tabulated and interpreted. This serves as the

bases for making conclusions and recommendations.

Statistical Treatment

All the data gathered through the use of questionnaires were

tallied, tabulated, summarized and orderly recorded.

To facilitate analysis and interpretations of data, computer

calculations and data processing were employed using Microsoft

Excel.

The following statistical tools were employed:

Slovin formula was used to calculate the sample size. It is

a systematic process to apply if the population figure (N) is

known. This is divided by the denominator composed of a constant

1 x population size x the square of the margin of error (0.05 or

0.01).
Frequency counts and percentage were the statistical tools

used in this study in order to describe the profile of the

students of General De Jesus College and to determine what

proportion of the respondents belongs to a specific category.

Formula:

% = _F_ x 100
N

Where:

% = Percentage
F = Frequency
N = Total Number of Respondents
100 = constant value

Weighted mean was used to determine the mean age and the

final weight of each item on the perceptual strengths of the

respondents. Weighted mean was computed to describe the level of

satisfaction of the respondent about the library services of

General De Jesus College.

Formula:

TWF
WM¿
N

Where:
WM = Weighted mean
TWF = Total Weighted Frequency
N = Total Number of Respondents

The scale value and verbal description was used in scoring

the items in the instrument, numerical weights were assigned to

the respondents to each of the items contained in the

questionnaire. In order to find the mean values of the items in

the Attitude Scale, the following mean range of scores was used:
