This document summarizes a study on the illumination levels of streetlights on main roads at De La Salle University in Dasmariñas, Philippines. The objectives were to determine the average illumination level, identify appropriate luminaires, and familiarize with artificial lamp design to achieve standard streetlight levels. Measurement points were established along roads and illumination was measured with a lux meter. Data tables show light distribution profiles with levels ranging from 0-5 lux. Observations found the average level to be 1.30 lux, meeting standards. Recommendations focus on factors for energy savings in street lighting design and operations.

II. INTRODUCTION
The primary benefit of street
light is safety for both
pedestrian and drivers.
Decreased visibility in the dark
increases the vulnerability of
road users to accidents and
mishaps. Well-lit roads help
both pedestrians and drivers
navigate easily, alert them to
possible obstacles and
approaching vehicles. Crime is
also lower in areas with good
street lighting, as criminals
often use the cover of darkness
to harass pedestrians. Street
`

Lighting is also a boon as people

can carry on their activities in
the absence of natural light.
This includes street vendors,
hawkers, and others. This adds
another layer of security to
people on the road as criminals
are also loathe to act in well-
populated areas. Beautification
is the final benefit of area
lighting, which helps add
character to the cityscape at
night thus helping people
appreciate their city even in the
dark.
Street lighting is probably the
most important thing in any
city, it improves safety for
drivers, riders, and pedestrians.
`

Street lighting can provide

safety advantages at locations
near intersections and can also
improve safety for pedestrians,
particularly at crossing points.
These lights have the ability to
keep the cityscape lit at night.
LED Street Lighting, is the
future of street lighting. There
are many reasons why LED
Street Lights are considered
more when it comes to street
and area lighting. This is
because not only are LED lights
are environmentally friendly,
but they also have a higher
output compared to
conventional lights. These lights
are also free from hazardous
`

chemicals such as mercury and

lead which give out toxins
Ever imagined the importance
of lighting polls on the edge of
the roads? Whether it is about
brightening our surroundings
or for security reasons, it is
always important to have good
quality street lights. No need to
mention that it will become
utmost impossible to find ways
in the dark without proper
street lights. We all know how
dangerous it can be to drive at
nights if there are no proper
street lights.
Reduced lighting can cause
night-time collisions. There are
a huge number of fatalities that
`

have occurred at night because

of low visibility and poor street
lights. According to annual
global road crash statistics,
somewhere around million
1.3

people die in road crashes every

year, which means
approximately deaths per
3,287

day. These stats are self-

alarming in nature and it
becomes extremely crucial to
have long lasting and good
quality street lights.
Undoubtedly, excellent street
lighting would not only reduce
the number of accidents on the
roads, but they would also help
the people with weak eyesight.
These are the people who find it
`

difficult to go outside their

houses at nights. Solar urban
LED street lighting is one such
solution. Solar LED lights come
with rechargeable batteries and
are powered by the photovoltaic
panels. These photovoltaic
panels help in charging the
batteries in the day time, and
then they power the LED lamps
to provide optimum light in the
nights. Too much lighting can
also cause problems. The lights
can be customized to decrease
the risk of accidents. But before
doing that, it is always
important to analyze the
location and regular traffic.
`

The solar LEDs are cost

effective, and they are designed
to turn on and off automatically
according to the lighting
conditions. The inbuilt sensors
in the lights help in analyzing
the lighting condition through a
light source. These solar lights
are capable of working
throughout a night and can
extend to a couple of nights, if
required. They are also capable
of coping up with strong winds.
The chances of overheating in
Solar LEDs are also very low.
As the source of light is Sun and
not electricity. There is no
operational cost involved in
Solar LEDs.
`

Solar LED street lights help you

in doing your tasks smoothly,
even at nights. The lights are
easy to maintain and very
effective. Street lighting must
not be ignored because it can
lead to fatalities and loss of
property as well. Having quality
street lights does not only serve
the purpose of safety in the
urban areas, but they also have
a huge impact on our standard
of living.

III. MATERIALS
1. LUX METER
2. PAPER AND PENCIL
3. TAPE METER
4. CHALK METER

IV. PROCEDURE
1. Prepare the necessary materials needed for the said
activity.
2. Make a sketch in your paper that can represent the
street area to be measured.
3. Using the lux meter measure, the amount of
illumination level that strikes the area being measured.
4. record the data in your paper
5. Determine the location of the street light which will be
necessary for the calculation of the illumination level.
6. Calculate the illumination level in each area portion that
has an equivalent measurement.
7. Compute for the percent difference.

VIII. CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATION
`

While designing new

street lighting installations or
dealing with reconstructions of
the existing ones, lighting
designers usually do not take
into consideration all of the
available means for energy
savings and optimal
performance. This paper offers
a set of the most important
recommendations regarding the
relevant influencing factors for
energy savings in street lighting,
the majority of which represent
the results and conclusions of
original research.
Recommendations which result
from user needs and regard
visual quality are also briefly
presented. Taking all of these
`

recommendations into account

provides improvement of
appearance and sense of
security, as well as energy and
cost savings.
All equipment shall comply with
the product particular
requirement of the DOE
Philippine Energy Standard
and Labeling Program to be
installed by the contractor shall
be new and shall bear the
Certification Mark Philippine
Standard Quality Mark or

issued by the Department of
Trade and Industry Bureau of
Product Standards DTIBPS for

`

components of the structural

system shall be compatible with
each other including that of the
luminaires and the accessories
to be used. Items not covered by
the following specifications shall
conform with standards and or
regulations under the
Department of Public Works
and Highways Bureau of
Standards.
Adequate and working street
lights also promote business and
tourism, as residents and
officials of any big city in the
world will testify.

group 1. Pedestrians and
vulnerable road users suffer
from decreased visibility in the
dark too. For these reason, ways
of reducing the risk to all road
users during the hours of
darkness must be found.
