BANASTHALI VIDYAPITH

SCHOOL OF AUTOMATION
COURSE HANDOUT (JULY-DEC 2020)

Class: B. Tech (EE), VII SEM

Course name & code: Communication Engineering (CE), (ECE 411)

Course Objective:

 To introduce communication channel and apply both deterministic and statistical Fourier concepts to
transmission propagation, power spectral density and modulation/coding characteristics.
 To develop and compare the functional blocks of coding/modulation and demodulation/decoding for analog and
digital communication systems.
 To analyze the analog-to-digital conversion process with emphasis on Nyquist Sampling Criteria, line coding,
pulse shaping and optimum detection functions.
 To develop and compare the performance of different digital communications in the presence of noise and
interference.
 To design linear systematic block coding and its error detection/correction capability using information theory.

Learning Outcomes

The Students will able to:

 Use different modulation and demodulation techniques used in analog communication

 Identify and solve basic communication problems
 Analyze transmitter and receiver circuits
 Compare and contrast design issues, advantages, disadvantages and limitations of analog communication
systems
 Understand various spreading techniques and determine bit error performance of various digital communication
systems.
 Differentiate between different pulse modulation and demodulation techniques and signal multiplexing for
various applications
