I. WHAT TO LEARN?
Show that care for the environment contributes to health, well being and
sustainable development
There are numerous theories to show care for the environment aside from the
ecocentric model such as deep ecology, social ecology and ecofeminism to name
some.
A. Deep ecology
B. Social ecology
For this theory, ecological crisis results from authoritarian social structures.
Destroying nature is a reflection wherein few people overpower others while
exploiting the environment for profit or self interest. Social ecologists call for small
scale societies which recognize that humanity is linked with the well being of the
natural world in which human life depends. Ecological problems cannot be
understood, much less resolved, without facing social issues. ... Social
ecology emphasizes that the destiny of human life goes hand-in-hand with the
destiny of the non-human world.
C. Ecofeminism
The human desire to experience union with others is one of the strongest
motivators of human behavior and the other is the desire for survival. From these
two contradictory strivings in every human being it follows that the social structure,
its values and norms, decides which of the two becomes dominant. Culture that
fosters the greed for possession, are rooted in one human potential. Cultures that
foster being and sharing are rooted in the other potential. We must decide which
of these two potentials to cultivate (Fromm, 2013).
Some plants have medicinal properties that may aid in the removal of
pathogens in the body
Fruits and vegetables are good source of numerous vitamins and minerals.
The aesthetic properties of the environment make an excellent venue for the
various exercises and activities.
The environment is the primary source of raw resources used to make all
types of food and materials
With appropriate techniques, the environment can reproduce and regenerate
resources that have been harvested or lost.
The environment produces oxygen and carbon dioxide that are necessary
factors in the human life.
ACTIVITY #1
ACTIVITY 1
Write your thoughts and possible solution to the health problem regarding
these statement of this section.
Prudence is defined as the ability to have good judgment that allows avoidance of
dangers and risks. Meanwhile, frugality is the act of suing money or other resources
wisely and practically. These virtues or values should not just be applied in personal
setting. The environment is also in critical need of these so that it can function
efficiently and productively. People have the responsibility to exercise prudence
and frugality not just within themselves, but also in taking care of the environment.
With the new forms of technological advances that make life easier, the
seemingly simple task of demonstrating prudence and frugality towards the
environment becomes a challenge. One must realize that the processes involved
in the environment are not occurring as fast as modern technologies do. Looking
deeper, exercising prudence and frugality towards environment is both personal
and collective responsibility.
