(b) Briefly describe the phenomenon of passivity. Name two common types of alloy that
passivate.
(c) With examples, explain (i) Pitting and (ii) Stress corrosion cracking. For each case
mention one method to prevent the corrosion.

Q2 (a) Calculate atomic packing factor for the rock salt crystal structure in which rc/ra =

(b) List the factors responsible for the formation of the non-crystalline solids. Briefly
explain each of these factors.
(c) For a diamond cubic crystal, state the crystallographic coordinates of the lattice points.
Assume the origin to be one of the corners of the unit cell.

Q3 (a) Explain Vvily

i. Diamond cubic structure has less atomic packing fraction despite higher number of
atoms per unit cell.
ii. Metallic solids has lower melting point as compared to covalent solids.
iii. Energetically grain boundaries are'unstable as compared to grains.
iv. There is no end centred cubic space lattice.

(iii) the nearest neighbour distance between the atoms in the crystal structure
(d) What are first two principle reflecting planes for BCC and FCC crystal structures? (3)
In case of BCC and FCC, why do the reflections allowed only from selected planes
whereas in case of simple cubic, reflections are allowed from all possible planes.
