Exercise - 1 - Familirization With LTSPICE PDF

- LTSpice allows simulation of circuits before physical implementation through schematic editing and SPICE analysis tools. It has libraries of common passive and active components. - To use LTSpice, download the software from Analog's website based on your operating system. Install and open the GUI to begin creating schematics. - Basic schematic editing involves placing components from the toolbar, connecting them with wires, setting properties, and saving the file. Simulations include DC operating point, transient, AC, and DC sweep analyses.

LTSPICE - Importance

• SPICE simulation of circuits (before physically building the circuit on breadboard!!)

• Schematic and symbol editor

• Library of passive elements (R,L,C components) and active elements (from Linear
Technology models)

• Simulate and view waveforms

• Transient, AC and DC/Stead-state analysis, DC Operating points

How to get LTSPICE ?
• Go to https://www.analog.com/en/design-center/design-tools-and-calculators/ltspice-
simulator.html#

• Navigate to the webpage and download either windows or mac version depending on your PC
operating system
• Save the setup at desire location in your PC
LT-SPICE Installation Steps
• Right Click on the downloaded ‘LTspiceXVII.exe’ application
• Select ‘Run as administrator’
In the installation popup window
1. Select ‘Accept’
2. Click on ‘Install Now’ button to start the installation procedure
‘LTspiceXVII has been successfully installed’ popup message will appear once installation is done.

Click ‘Ok’ to proceed to LTspiceXVII GUI (graphical user interface)

LTspice XVII GUI
Getting Started – New Schematic
Navigate to following steps in LTSPICE to create a new schematic:
File → New Schematic (Ctrl+N)
Getting Started – Basic Schematic Editing
Undo: Undo the last command.
Redo: Redo the last Undo command.
Text: Annotates the schematic with information.
SPICE Directive: Place text on the schematic that will be included in the
netlist. This lets you mix schematic capture with a SPICE netlist.
SPICE Analysis: Enter/edit the simulation command.
Resistor: Place a new resistor on the schematic.
Capacitor: Place a new capacitor on the schematic.
Inductor: Place a new inductor on the schematic.
Diode: Place a new diode on the schematic.
Component: Place a new component on the schematic. The command brings up
a dialog that lets you browse and preview the symbol database.
Rotate: Rotate the sprited objects.
Mirror: Mirror the sprited objects.
Draw Wire: Click the left mouse button to start a wire. Each mouse click
will define a new wire segment.
Label Net: Specify the name of a node
Place GND: Place a GROUND symbol. This is node "0", the global circuit
common.
Delete: Delete objects by clicking on them
Move: Click on or drag a box around the objects you wish to move.
Drag: Click on or drag a box around the objects you wish to drag.
Getting Started – Toolbar
• Open a Component dialog box by Selecting Component Symbol from Toolbar or Navigate (Edit → Component F2)
• Select ‘voltage’ in the list and click ‘OK’ button
• Place voltage source symbol on schematic window by left mouse click
• Place a resistor in new schematic by selecting resistor symbol from toolbar
• Place a GROUND in new schematic by selecting GND symbol from toolbar
Draw a wire between two components to have electrical connections
Connect all components using wire
Right click on the voltage source (V1) component to modify the voltage value

Enter ’10’ as resistance value

Final circuit is connected with desired resistance and voltage

values will look like this

Right click on the

Resistor (R1)
component to
modify the
resistance value

Enter ’10’ as
resistance value
Save the schematic Draft at desired location in your PC with desired name
Simulation Commands
• To run a simulation, specify the type of analysis to be performed
• Types of analyses used in LTSPICE:
➢ Transient analysis: Perform a transient analysis. This is the most direct simulation of a circuit. It
basically computes what happens when the circuit is powered up.
➢ Small signal AC: It computes the AC complex node voltages as a function of frequency. Linearized
small signal models for all of the nonlinear devices in the circuit at DC operating point of the circuit.
The resultant linearized circuit is solved in the frequency domain over the specified range of
frequencies using independent voltage/current source(s).
➢ DC sweep: This performs a DC analysis while sweeping the DC value of a source. It is useful for
computing the DC transfer function of an amplifier or plotting the characteristic curves of a device.
➢ DC transfer function: This is an analysis mode that finds the DC small signal transfer function of a node voltage
or branch current due to small variations of an independent source.
➢ DC operating point: Perform a DC operating point solution with capacitances open circuited and inductances
short circuited.
• Simulation commands are placed on the schematic as text (dot commands)
Select on ‘DC op pnt’ (to check the values of DC Place .op command on schematic as shown in
voltages and currents) and then ‘OK’ below figure
Click on Run icon from toolbar or navigate Simulation → Run
A window appears showing the DC voltages (all nodes) and currents.
Check the values.
Step2. In Edit Simulation Command;
Step1. Add an extra resistor (R2) Select DC sweep tab
in the circuit as shown below
Specify the following
Click on Run icon from toolbar or navigate Simulation → Run
• Select the node in the circuit to observe the voltage
• Select device to see the current through that device
Applying Sinusoidal Voltage as input to circuit

Step 1: Right click on the voltage

source (V1) in schematic;
Properties popup window will be
open; Click on ‘Advanced’

Step 2: Select ‘SINE (offset Vamp

…)’

Step 3: Please specify (enter) the

values in your circuit for further
simulation
Edit Simulation Command; Select ‘Transient’ tab

Specify the following

• Click on Simulation ‘Run’
• In Waveform window; You can add each voltage or current to view the waveforms
Transient analysis of Sinusoidal input to the circuit
