INTRODUCTION TO ICT

Definition of terms:
o Information – refers to the knowledge obtained from reading, investigation, study or
research
o Communication – act of transmitting messages and a process whereby information is
exchanged between individuals
o Technology – application of science used to solve problems

Definitions of ICT:
 Various tools and devices that are used to gather, create, edit and store
information that are communicated or exchanged by others by means of electronics.
 Used to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve information from
anywhere, anytime.
Official IBM Glossary’s definition of ICT:
“ICT is the use of computer based information systems and communications systems to
process, transmit, and store data and information.”
UK National Curriculum Document (2000)
“ICT as the technology used to handle information and aid communication.”

1. Technological Convergence – the merging of existing technologies to create

5. Artificial Intelligence – the ability of a computer or computer-controlled robot to


perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.
Examples: Self Driving Cars, Siri, Alexa

6. Robotics – field of computer science and engineering concerned with creating


devices that can move and react to sensory input

7. Virtual Reality - computer technology is used to create a simulated environment.


It is an artificial environment that is created with software and presented to the
user in such a way that the user suspends belief and accepts it as a real
environment.

8. Augmented Reality – a technology that superimposes a computer-generated


image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view. AR
apps use the phone’s camera to show a view of the real world in front of the
user, then put a layer of information, including text or images.
Examples: Pokemon Go, Snapchat Camera

9. Internet of Things (IoT) - Billions of physical devices around the world that are now
connected to the internet, collecting and sharing data.

10. Cloud computing – the process of storing and accessing data and programs
over the internet instead of your computer’s hard drive.
Examples: OneDrive (Microsoft), GoogleDrive, DropBox, iCloud
