SPANISH 1 SYLLABUS

Course Overview:
This course is designed to introduce the language of Spanish to students. In this course, basic
Spanish concepts will be taught to the students along with education of the Spanish culture.
We will learn about food, activities, family, school, objects, along with a variety of various
vocabulary terms and an education of how to communicate with others in the Spanish
language. Our goal is to improve our ability to read, write, speak, and understand Spanish
while gaining an appreciation of the Spanish culture! The course is divided into two different
parts over a two-trimester period. The course is divided into Spanish 1A & Spanish 1B.

Units in Class:
 Para Empezar
 Unit 1: Mis amigos y yo
 Unit 2: La escuela
 Unit 3: La comida
 Unit 4: Los pasatiempos
 Unit 5: Fiesta en familia
 Unit 6: La casa
 Unit 7: De compras
 Unit 8: Experiencias
 Unit 9: Medios de comunicación

*Para Emperzar-Unit 4 will be taught in Spanish 1A.


*Units 5-9 will be taught in Spanish 1B.

Rules of the Class:


1) Participate when asked to participate.
2) Follow all directions the first time they are given.
3) Bring all materials to class every day.
4) Be in your assigned seat with your materials when the bell rings.
5) Do not talk when I am talking, and always listen.
6) Respect me and yours peers throughout the class.

Materials:
 Notebook Paper
 Pencil, Pen
 Binder (At least 1”) & Tab Dividers for binder (You will need to keep the same binder
for both Spanish 1A and Spanish 1B.)
 Flashcards & iPad
Grading System:
 60% Summative Assessment (Tests, Oral Assessments, Projects, Quizzes)
 40% Formative Assessment (Daily Work, Exit Slips, Al Empezar’s, Homework)

 Note: Cheating includes plagiarism, the use of a web translator, cheat sheets,
looking on someone’s paper, talking during tests/quizzes. It will result in a 0 for
you and the provider.

Excused Absences/Make-Up Work & Late Work.


1) Look up the missed assignments and classwork on the class website. (the website is on
the high school’s webpage)
2) School policy states that a student returning from an excused absence will have two
days (plus one for each additional day absent) to make up the work. If it isn’t make up
following this school policy, it will count as late work.
3) Late work may be turned in the next day for up to 50% credit.

 All tests may be retaken. Retakes should take place within two weeks of the original
date of the assignment. You can receive up to half credit back on the parts of the tests
you got incorrect.

Tutoring/Help
 I will always be available in the morning from 7:30-8:00. I will also be available during
most of the week after school from 3:10-4:00 in the afternoon. Be sure to ask me
during class when you need to stay after in the afternoon for something so I can let
you know if I am available to help you. I will help you as much as I possibly can as I
want everyone to do great in the class!
