1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION OF MINI RESEARCH

The Ministry of Education Matriculation Programme is a preparatory programme for

students with Malaysian Certificate of Education to qualify them for degree courses in

science, technology and the professional arts in public and private universities. Pre-university

studies take two semesters. The Ministry of Education Matriculation Programme offers three

areas of study which are science, accountancy and technical. Science stream can be divided

into three modules. Module I, module II and module III.

The pros and cons of local universities are affordable tuition. Next, have many

knowledgeable instructors. The cons of local universities are availability of classes and the

accessibility of the professors may be limited, since each professor have hundreds of

students. The pro of private universities is academic excellence where learning is the

emphasis more than the curriculum itself. The cons are demanding schedule make it difficult

to balance extra curriculum activities and social life. Furthermore, cost of tuition is high.

The advantages of studying in Malaysia are ability to get foreign degrees qualification

while fully studying in Malaysia from countries like UK, US, Australia, Canada and etc at a

much lower cost. Next, the education is established and high quality of education system and

standard. The disadvantage is not as many choices and in the manner of ranking. The benefits

of studying abroad are can rapidly advance your language skill. Next, it can advance your

academic and career trajectory. The weaknesses are expensive especially when dealing with

currency exchange and prone to homesickness which can potentially spiral into something

negative such as depression.

4
Furthermore, there are also many factors that affect the student choices. One of the

factors is programme offered. The programme must be interested by the students. Next, is

about the facilities of the university. Of course, university with the poor facilities will be less

popular among students. The ranking of the university is also important, since everyone now

looking at the ranking of the university to determine the excellent level of the university.

Lastly is about the position of the university. The university at urban area will always become

the best option compared to university in rural area.

The right choice is must in choosing university because it would effects our future.

Imagine that we choose the right university, it will guide us in achieve a flying colours result

and then bright our future, but if not, you will be on the wrong path in achieving your dream.

So, the big question here is ‘What is the choice of university after graduated from

matriculation programme’?

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH

The research is to find out whether students prefer to enrol in public university or

private university. Other than that, the researchers also like to find out where KMS students

prefer to study, local or abroad. The last objective is to find out the factors that influenced the

choice of university.

1.3 STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

Choice of university is very important for students. University with good facilities,

good environment, excellent lectures and others will really help students to study in a

comfortable condition thus will lead to achievement of good results. But, how many of us

really know how to choose the most suitable university for ourselves? As our group are

5
concerned about our future, we are finding out about the pros and cons of the local

universities and abroad universities. We are wondering, how students in KMS choose their

university after graduated from matriculation programme. Therefore, we conducted a

research to find out whether students prefer to enrol in public university or private university,

local or abroad and the factors that influenced the choice of university.

6
2.0 Literature Review

Malaysia is one of the countries that offered high level studying for students. It is shown

by many foreign students from abroad studying in Malaysia. They are interested to study in

Malaysia because of several reasons. Furthermore, Malaysia has many public and private

universities. State universities, unlike the private counterparts, are funded completely by the

public. Since the health of the universities is depend to state support, it is strictly run

according to state regulation. Most of the coursework is fairly standardised among state

universities. It also promotes collaborative learning in classroom rather than independent

studies. Hence, there are pros and cons of state universities.

According to the article entitled “The Pros and Cons of State Universities” (no

date). One of the pros of state universities is affordable tuition. It is no doubt the cheapest

path to a diploma or degree. Next, the campus is bustling at all hour, offering many social

opportunities and a varied selection of extracurricular activities. There are also on-campus

employment opportunities. These are for those who want to earn extra money for degree. One

of the cons of state universities is difficulty in finding information. This is due to large size of

universities. Next, classes available are limited. Class may fill quickly, so, chances to get the

class that you desired decrease. Furthermore, access to the professors may be limited, since

each professor has hundreds of students. Lastly, students may loss in the crowd. Students at a

larger school run a higher risk of feeling lonely and isolated. We chose this article because it

provided us with useful information about the pros and cons of state universities.

7
According to the article entitled, “Top 10 Benefits of Studying in Malaysia” (no

date). Many students prefer study in Malaysia because of the 10 reasons. The first reason is

established and high quality education system and standard. The Malaysian Qualification

Agency (MQA) under Ministry of Higher Education responsible for monitoring and

overseeing the quality assurance practices and accreditation of national higher education.

Next, the article claimed that students choose to study in Malaysia because has ability to get

foreign degree qualification studying fully in Malaysia from countries like UK, US and

Australia at a much lower cost through twinning and 3+0 degrees, as foreign university

campuses that are already setup in Malaysia. Malaysia recently have been considered as one

of the countries that are widely chosen as the country for foreign and local students to

continue their studies. This is obviously because of the numerous advantages of studying in

Malaysia. We chose this article because it gives us enough information about pros of

studying in Malaysia.

According to the article entitled “Why Study in Malaysia?”(no date) in choosing

Malaysia as a study destination, students benefits from competitive course fees and an

extensive selection of popular courses and a wide range of study options and universities and

colleges to choose from. Moreover, Malaysia has a wide usage of English, which makes

living and studying easy for students who are proficient in English while at the same time

creating an environment for those who want to pick up the language. Other than that,

Malaysia is an economically sound and socially safe country, which has a stable government

and a low serious crime rate and a geographically safe environment, with Malaysia situated in

a zone free from most natural disasters. Malaysia has many universities but there only have

some private university in our country. Private university was the right chosen private

university are each intensely unique from public university. We chose this article, because it

8
helped us in finding the needed information about the benefits of studying in Malaysia that

can help us to design our questionnaire.

According to the article entitled “The Pros and Cons of Private Universities”(no

date) One of the pros of private universities is has academic excellent. At the private

university learning is the emphasis more than the curriculum itself. The curriculum is

rigorous and the course-work is unending, but learning is the central focus at such school.

Next, it involved students. Most students are committed to their academic success. They

participate actively in classroom discussions, complete course-work and fully engaged in

classroom culture. There also have top-notch professors. One of the cons is have homogenous

populations. Next, it demanding schedule. Last but not least, tuition’s fees are expensive.

Tuition is high, even for a good education. If you think money is no objects, then go to

private university. Everyone wants to further their study after SPM, STPM or Matriculation

Programme. Whether they want to study locally or abroad? It depend on several factors,

some people want to study abroad because they want to have an experienced on expose to

diverse culture but some prefer to study locally for some reasons. We chose this article,

because it enables us to know more about the pros and cons of private universities.

According to the article entitled “Benefits of Studying Abroad”,(2013) one of the

benefit studying abroad is one can form valuable new contacts and lasting connection.

Students can make a large network of contact that includes the faculties, local academics,

program staff, and homestay families of the university. Many students draw upon the in-

country academic and professional contacts, they acquire during study abroad following their

program’s conclusion. Others stay in touch with homestay families for decade. We selected

9
these articles because it helps us to design our questionnaires. Besides that, this article also

gives some insights how to deal with the issues found in our research topic.

10
3.0 METHODOLOGY
The data for the study was obtained through a set of questionnaire and interview

sessions.

3.1 QUESTIONNAIRE
For our research, we have used the questionnaire to enquire students views on their

choice of university and the factors that influenced them. There were altogether 12 questions

in the questionnaire. Then 30 students of KMS were selected to be our respondents to

complete the questionnaire and the respondents consist of different modules in science

students and accounts students. The respondents were one day to answer all the questions.

Lastly, the researchers started to analyse the raw data once all the questionnaire sets were

collected back. All the respondents gave us good cooperation in our research.

3.2 INTERVIEW

Conducting an interview, was chosen as our second instrument to gain information

about the choice of university after graduated from matriculation programme. 6 structured

questions were prepared for interview respectively but during the interview sessions, we

would ask extra spontaneous questions if necessary. We have interview two students for our

research and we choose according to gender in KMS which is male and female. By then we

could get some different views and different opinions from different gender. We could share

information about others choice of university. Our interviewees are Jayanthi A/P Peryasamy

from module 1 and Fahmi Che Lah from module 1. An appointment was made and the date

was fixed for each interview. All the interviews were recorded and the transcript of every

interview was made after the interview sessions completed.

11
4.0 DATA ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION
The results of the research would be first presented in the non-linear forms before

discussing them in details. The data from the interview sessions would also be included in the

discussion.

5.0 CONCLUSION
5.1 SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS
Malaysia has many public and private universities. The findings of the study have

revealed the most preferred university among KMS students. The research has shown that

most students prefer public university because of the affordable tuition fees. Some of the

students chose private universities because of high career opportunities. Other than that,

majority of the students prefer local universities than universities abroad because of the

cheaper tuition fees and no franchise fees. There are many factors of why students tend to

choose the certain universities. The most popular factor is courses offered. Most of KMS

students claimed that the ranking of the universities is important because it prove how good

the universities are. Majority of the students said that they do not need to have a person they

know in the university that they are going to because they want to meet new friend and be

independent. Besides that, more than half of KMS students will not accept the course offered

that does not match with the course that they apply for because it does not suitable with them

and they have no interest to study the courses. Finally, majority of the KMS students prefer to

study at research university because it has possibility of internship and collaborative research

with experts.

5.2 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER STUDIES

It is recommended that future research should have a long duration so that researchers

have a lot of time to do research at least 3 months or the whole of semester. Now, we do not

have sufficient time to gather all the data and information for our data analysis and

discussion. Apart from that, the researchers can do some observations by snapping some

pictures. The researchers will take photos that can be used as a clearer evidence to prove the

respondents.
25
Besides, we should add some questions to get a clearer data and information at least

25 questions for the research because we think that the questionnaire for our research is

insufficient. Then, the future researchers can increase their number of respondents in about

one sixth from the whole KMS students. The feedback that we may get will give us high

satisfaction and worth it for our effort if we have more number of respondents.

On the other hand, we have fewer numbers of people to interview. So, we should have

more people to interview from different categories for instance from different courses or

modules. Next, we also do not have enough questions for interview. For future researchers

can ask extra, spontaneous questions during the interview.

5.3 CONCLUDING REMARKS

First of all, we feel so glad because we successfully finish this research within the

time given. This research benefits students who are graduated from matriculation programme.

The research will help students to choose the university that suited best for them. They will

also well-aware about what factors should be considered in choosing university.

INTERVIEWEE NAME : JAYANTHI A/P PERYASAMY(2014)
Interviewer : Good morning miss. I am here to interview you according to our research

topic that is ‘Choice Of University After Graduating From Matriculation

Programme’. Have you decided whether you want to study in public university

or private university?

Jayanthi : Yes, i have made my choice. I have decided to further my study in public

university.

Interviewer : Why do you choose to study in local university?

Jayanthi : I preferred to study in public university because it’s much cheaper when

compared to private university.

Interviewer : Which one you choose, to study abroad or local? Why?

Jayanthi: I preferred to study abroad because of the quality of the education is much

better than local university.

Interviewer : What are the factors in choosing the university?

Jayanthi : The main factor in choosing university is because the public university offer

the course that I want. Other than that, I will choose university with higher

ranking.

Interviewer : If you get an offer from university but the course offered is not match with

what you applied. Will you accept? Why?

28
Jayanthi : No, I will not accept it because I don’t think I can score when I study about a

course which don’t suite myself unless I don’t have other choice.

Interviewer : Based on my previous question, you said that you will choose university with

higher ranking, why is it so?

Jayanthi : Oh, because it somehow shows the quality of education provided.

Interviewer : Ok. We have done for our interview. Thank you for you good cooperation and

for spending your time to answer my questions.

Jayanthi : I’m most welcome.

29
TRANSCRIPT 2
INTERVIEWEE NAME : FAHMI CHE LAH (2014)
Interviewer : Good afternoon Mister Fahim. Sorry for disturbing, actually I want to ask you

something regarding our research project entitled ‘The Choice Of University

After Graduated From Matriculation Programme’. So, may I ask you some

questions?

Fahmi : Yes, you may. I will answer if I can.

Interviewer : Firstly, what is the university that you much prefer, whether it is

abroad or local? And why would you choose that?

Fahmi : For me, I more prefer abroad university. This is because I have an

ambition to further my studies in overseas since I was a child. Other than that,

I think there are more advantages if I further my studies abroad when

compared to local.

Interviewer : What are the advantages that you can get when studying in overseas?

Fahmi : One of the advantages is I can be more independent since I should manage

life by myself, without my parents’ interference. I also can learn other

cultures. Thus, boost my knowledge about something that cannot be found in

our land. Furthermore, I can improve my language skills since we are speaking

other language that we are often use in Malaysia.

30
Interviewer : My next question is will you prefer public or private university and why?

Fahmi : Of course, I will prefer public university. This is because the cost when

studying here is affordable and much cheaper than private universities. This

can reduce my parents’ burden. Public universities are always well-known

universities. Other than that, when studying in public university, you can get

benefits from the government. It is due to that public university is under

government control. Government will give support to the students and support

given is basically a financial support.

Interviewer : That is some good points. What factors that you think that can influence the

university chosen by students? And why that factor can be influence the

students’ choices?

Fahmi : I think what students really consider are the facilities, the ranking of

universities, the course offered and some may consider distance from house.

As we know, universities that have more facilities such as swimming pool,

gymnasium and many more is more preferred by students. The ranking is

important because it is a proof to show that the university is completely

excellent. The university also must have some popular costs in order to attract

more students come to the universities. Some that consider distance maybe

because they cannot be afar from their family.

Interviewer : It is such a brilliant points. So, what can you conclude about our topic?

31
Fahmi : Students should be able to determine their universities by considering the

factors in choosing it in order to get the best and suitable university for them.

Interviewer : Thank you for your cooperation that can help me to finish this research by

answering this interview question. See you later.
