Beam LSM

The document describes the design of a beam with an effective span of 7.5m that is subjected to a uniformly distributed load of 19.4 KN/m. It calculates the maximum bending moment as 204.61 KN/m and maximum shear force as 109.1 KN. It then selects an ISLB 400 section that meets the required plastic and shear strength capacities. Deflection checks show the beam deflects less than the allowable limit. The document also provides background on beam design calculations and parameters.

Design of beam

Effective Span "L" = 7.5 m

Uniformaly distributed load "W" = 19.4 KN/m

Maximum Factored Bending Moment "M" = (1.5 WL2)/8

M = ( 1.5 x 19.4 x 7.5 x 7.5 ) / 8 = 204.61 KN/m

Maximum Factored Shear Force "V" = (1.5 WL)/2

V = ( 1.5 x 19.4 x 7.5 ) / 2 = 109.10 KN

Yield strength of material "fy" = 250 Mpa

Design bending strength, "f bd" = 250 / 1.1
= 227.27
Design Shear Strength
250 / Ö3 x 1.1 = 131.22 N/mm2

Design for Bending

Plastic section modulus, Zp required
Zp = M gmo / bb fy

gmo = 1.1 (Partial safety factor for material on yielding)

bb = 1 ( for Plastic and compact section )
Zp = ( 204.61 x 1000000 x ) / 1 x 250 = 900284 mm3
= 900.28 cm3
Section used
ISLB 400
H = 400 mm tw = 8 mm
bf = 165 mm Izz = 19306.3 cm4
Tf = 12.5 mm Zp = 1099.5 cm3
h2 = 31.9 mm
Distance from extreme fiber to root of fillet, h2 = 31.9 mm
e = Ö( (250250/ / fy ) = = 1
bf / tf = 82.5 / 12.5 = 6.6
6.6 < 9.4 e (as per IS 800:2007 Clause 3.7.2 and 3.7.4)
bf / tf should be less then 9.4 e so section is ok
d /tw = ( 400 - 31.9 x 2 ) / 8 = 42.03
42.03 < 84 e (as per IS 800:2007 Clause 3.7.2 and 3.7.4)
d /tw should be less then 84 e so section is ok

Check for Shear

Depth of section "H" = 400 mm
Theckness of web "tw" = 8 mm
Area "Av" = 3200 mm2
Shear stress induced, fs = 109100 / 3200 = 34.094 N/mm2
34.09 < 131.22 Hence Ok

Check for diflection
Maximum difflection Δ = K WL3/EI
"W" total load on the span
"L" span length
"E" young modulus of elasticity = 2.0 x 105 N/mm2 = 200 KN
"I" Moment of inertia = 19306.30 cm4
"K" coefficient depending upon distrubution of loading on the beam and condition of beam

" K " for Simply supported span = 5/384 = 0.0130

W = 19.4 x 7.5 = 145.5 KN
" L " span = 7500 mm
145.5 x 7500 3
Maximum difflection Δ = 0.0130 x( )
200 x 19306.30 x 104

= 0.0130 x ( 6.14E+13 )
3.86E+10
= 0.0130 x 1589.71 = 20.70 mm
Allowable Difflection i.e. Span / 300, 7500 / 300 = 25.00 mm
so 20.7 < 25.0 Hence OK
