Trimming Calculation

This document provides an example of how to use a trimming table to calculate new drafts when weight is added to a ship. The example shows that for a ship with original aft, fore, and mean drafts of 6.0m, adding 300 tonnes of cargo to the cargo hold results in new drafts of 5.891m aft, 6.257m fore, and 6.074m mean. These new drafts are obtained by multiplying the draft change rates per unit weight in the trimming table by the amount of weight added.

Trimming Table

1) This table gives rough data for marking adjustments of a ship to have master's wanted trim
and drafts condition. Variation of fore and aft draft, give in this table is based upon the
loaded weight of proper tonnes for each tanks.

2) The following example shows how to calculate new drafts due to adding weight with "TRIMMING TABLE"

When the ship's aft, fore and mean draft is 6.0 m and 300 tonnes cargo is added in CARGO HOLD (C),
then we can obtain approximately new drafts as follows ;

ExampleCalculation
Item
Aft (m) Fore (m) Mean (m)
Original draft (EXT) 6.017 6.017 6.017
Adding weight in tank 300 tonnes
Draft change rate per unit weight -0.042 0.080 0.019
** Multiply 3 3 3
Correction value -0.126 0.240 0.057
New draft (EXT) 5.891 6.257 6.074

This value is obtained from "TRIMMING TABLE" in next page.
