Raksha CPVC pipes 1/2” to 2” SDR 11 & SDR 13.5 meets requirement of IS 15778 and fittings in SDR 11 as
per ASTM –D 2846 in CTS (Copper tube size). Raksha CPVC pipes are classified by pressure rating i.e. working
pressure at 27°C and 82°C. Raksha CPVC SDR 11 and SDR 13.5 pipes are made from identical composition of CPVC
compounds and have the same physical properties. SDR stands for Standard Dimension Ratio to wall thickness. The
above pipes are recommended for water temperatures ranging from +1°C to +90°C. The recommended maximum
safe working stress for these pipes is 8.6 MPa at 27°C. At higher temperature up to 90°C, the strength of the pipe
reduces and working pressure shall be modified in accordance with the following table.

Ratio Working Pressure at (In kg/cm2)

27°C 82°C
SDR 11 27.8 6.8
SDR 13.5 21.8 5.5

• Burst Pressure of these pipes are more than three times the above pressure ratings
• IS specification (IS-15778) for CPVC includes both SDR 11 and SDR 13.5 pipes

Industrial CPVC pipe is manufactured by extrusion in sizes from 2½” to 4” diameter to SCH 40, SCH 80, and
SDR dimensions. CPVC pipe for plumbing system is manufactured by extrusion in sizes 1/2” to 2” copper tube size
(CTS) dimension. The CTS plumbing products are made to copper tube outside diameter dimension, in accordance
with ASTM-D-2846 specification, and have an SDR 11 wall thickness. The pressure ratings of the CTS SDR 11
systems are 400 psi (pounds per square inch) at 73° F and 100° F. CPVC plumbing pipe is cold in both straight
length and (in small diameters) coils.

Test Method for Quality Control

Test Procedure for the Pipe:
1. Dimensional Tests: To ensure that all dimensions confirm to appropriate standards
2. Flattening Test: Sample pipes are compressed to check that despite compression, pipes do not crack
3. Burst Pressure Test: Ensures maximum internal pressure to be over three times normal pressure rating for the pipe
4. Drop Impart Test: Ensures weights are dropped on to the pipe, without cracks or failures
5. Heat Reversion Test: Ensures residual stresses left in pipe after the pipe is produced

Test Procedure for the Fittings:

1. Dimensional Test: Ensures correctness of dimensions for wall thickness, socket diameters and socket depths as per
relevant standards
2. Burst Pressure Test: Ensures maximum burst pressure of fittings must be over three times the normal pressure
rating

Applications of Raksha CPVC Pipes

Raksha CPVC piping, which is suitable for hot and cold water distribution, has a 400 psi pressure rating at room
temperature, and a 100 psi pressure rating at 180° F. The materials used in Raksha CPVC pipes are resistant to
many everyday household chemicals. Since CPVC materials do not support combustion, they cannot burn without an
external fuel source. This property makes CPVC pipe an attractive alternative to steel and copper pipe for fire sprinkler
application. CPVC fire sprinkler piping systems are approved for light hazard application and for use in single and
multifamily dwellings. Installation shall be in accordance with the NFPA section 13, 13D and 13R.

Galvanised steel pipes are outdated & are not used in most countries for plumbing application because of its inherent
problems of leaking, rusting, scaling, pitting, leaching and corrosion.

RAKSHA CPVC SOLVENT
CEMENTS

Basic Principles of Solvent Cementing

To make consistently good joints, the following points should be clearly understood:
1. The joining surfaces must be softened and made semi-fluid
2. Sufficient cement must be applied to fill gap between pipe and fitting
3. Assembly of pipe and fittings must be made while the surfaces are still wet and cement is still fluid
4. Joint strength develops as the cement dries. In the tight part of the joint the surfaces will tend to fuse together in the loose part,
the cement will bond to both surfaces. These areas must be softened and penetrated
5. Raksha Solvent cement eliminates the use of primer upto 2” only.

• NOTE : The company shall not be liable for any kind of damage(s) to the piping system, arising
out of improper use and/or faulty workmanship.

Safe Handling of Solvents

When using solvent cements, primers and cleaners there are some basic safety measures all users should keep in mind.
1. After every application of solvent on the pipe / fitting ensure to put the lid back on the solvent cement container & tighten the lid
slightly to avoid evaporation & escape of solvent
2. Avoid prolonged breathing of solvent vapors. When pipe and fitting are being joined in enclosed areas, the use of ventilating
devices are advised
3. Keep the cements, primers and cleaners away from all sources of ignition, heat, sparks and open flame
4. Keep containers of cements, primers and cleaners tightly closed except when the product is being used
5. Dispose of all rags used with solvents in a proper outdoor waste receptable
6. Avoid eye and skin contact. In case of eye contact, flush with plenty of water for 15 minutes and call a physician

09 RAKSHA - JEEVAN BHAR KI SURAKSHA

SOLVENT CEMENT JOINING PROCESS

Cutting
Cut the pipe square handsaw with suitable guide or pipe cutter.

Deburring
Chamfer or Deburr pipe, at 10-15. Remove burrs from inside & outside diameters
with a knife, file or abrasive paper. Insert the pipe into the fitting and check
that the interference occurs about 1/3rd to 2/3rd of the socket depth. Too tight
or loose filment may lead to leak, hence should be avoided. Remove any dirt,
moisture, or grease from pipe end and fitting sockets with a clean dry rag.

Cleaning
Cleaning with the cloth outside of the pipe & inside of the socket.

Solvent Cement Application

Apply cement uniformly to inside of socket and outside of pipe end with a bristle
nylon brush and a second coat of cement to pipe end. Apply cement quickly to
prevent it from drying and completely cover all jointing surface area of the pipe
and fitting. Do not apply excessive cement in bell socket.

Jointing
After applying the last coat of cement to the pipe, while cement is still wet (within
20 seconds)forcefully bottom the male end of the pipe in the socket giving pipe
or fitting 1/4th turn to distribute the cement evenly.

Wiping
Wipe with a clean dry cloth after applying the solvent.

THERMAL CONTRACTION AND EXPANSION

For CPVC pipes which are not embedded inside the wall but are carrying Hot Water from Boiler/Solar water heater,
etc it is most important to use readymade expansion loop supplied by Raksha. Use one Raksha expansion loop for
every 12ft run of the pipe, between two fixed joints.
For longer lines & longer distances between the fixed joints expansion loops can be made at site with calculations
as per the Raksha manual. Illustration for use & correct clamping is provided separately.
• Use one company supplied expansion loop between two consecutive fixed Joints (9-15 ft distance minimum)

CORRECT INSTALLATION IN SOLAR WATER HEATER LINES

• Not recommended to directly connect CPVC pipes to the water heater outlet. One meter long metal nipple should
be connected directly to the heater so that the CPVC pipe is not damaged by the buildup of excessive radiant heat
from the flue.

“ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Raksha CPVC UV Protected?
CPVC compound used for manufacturer of pipes and fittings are already UV protected. Earlier more than
45 years of use has shown that there is no deterioration in pressure withstanding capacity of Raksha CPVC
pipes which have been installed under the sunlight, even after several years of installation. However, for extra
protection for pipes which are directly under harsh sunlight, an Elastomeric water soluble paint may be used
to coat over the pipes & fittings in two layers to give the best results.

Do we need to insulate the CPVC pipes?

Thermal conductivity of Raksha CPVC pipes & fittings is 0.14 W/MK whereas of copper is 400 W/MK.Since
CPVC is a very bad conductor of heat, light insulation is recommended only for installation where there is a
continuous flow of hot water e.g solar/centralised heater. In bathrooms with independent heaters within 3
meters location insulation may not be necessary.

How to repair the punctures in the wall chasing/concealed installation?

Repair of punctured & damaged pipe due to drilling/chiseling can be done by removing the cement plaster
and using the pipe repair piece supplied by the company. clean throughly the area of pipe damaged and make
it dry. Apply solvent cement on the surface of pipe at damaged portion in the entire circumference. Also apply
solvent cement on the inner surface of pipe repair piece & snap on over damaged area. Tie a small piece of
string/binding wire around the repair piece and pipe for sometime to allow to set. This is an unique system
available with CPVC pipe where the damaged pipe need not be cut or shifted back & forth for repair. Please
conduct pressure test before replastering.

How to prevent the damage due to drilling/ hammering?

After concealing, like any other plastic/ copper pipes Raksha CPVC pipes & fittings are prone to damage &
punctures due to drilling / hammering or chiseling. To avoid such accidents, piping route/layout diagrams and
proper instruction may be given to the customer, tiling, carpentry & electrician teams, Also contrasting colour
may be added to the cement mortar used to fill the chasings.

Is the water passing through the solvent cement joints safe for drinking?
Raksha CPVC pipes & fittings are made from NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) approved raw material.
NSF is an independent non-government body in USA for water purity standard and certifies the piping system
including solvent joints to be used for potable drinking water application.

What is the expected performance of a CPVC water distribution system?

CPVC piping systems have been installed and operated since 1959, and initial installations are still performing
faultlessly. CPVC piping will not fail prematurely due to corrosion, electrolysis, or scale build-up in areas where
water, soil, and/or atmospheric conditions are aggressive and can be safely used for hot water supply.

How to support the pipeline during wall chase installations?
The installation may be supported with the help of pre-drilled 15 mm thick plywood piece, 6” long by 2”
wide. After fixing the pipe the wall chasing it may be supported by fixing the plywood piece over the pipe &
the chasing. Only 3 to 4 such support may be needed in one toilet/bathroom installation. During installation
it is best to avoid contact between pipe & nails. Properly align and firmly grout all threaded fittings inside the
chasing with strong mix of cement and sand. Pipe line ends or elbow should be laid at least 2.5 cm inside
the wall surface.

Can we use the combination of CPVC and uPVC piping system?

It is strictly advised to use CPVC pipes in all internal plumbing for both Hot & Cold water line. There has been
instances of the non-return valve failure or pressure differential in Hot & Cold water line due to which hot
water has entered in the cold line. If the cold water line pipes is not temperature resistant then it will lead to
leakage or bursting causing huge loss & inconvenience to the customer.

Why to give the expansion loops in the solar hot water line?
For CPVC pipes which are not embedded inside the wall but are carrying hot water from boiler/solar water
heater, etc it is most important to use ready made expansion loop supplied by Shand Group of Industries. Use
one ready made loop for every 9-12 ft. run of the pipe, between two fixed joints. The loops are designed for
a max & min diffrential temp of 70 C. For longer line & longer distances between the fixed joints expansion
loops can be made at site with calculation as per the Raksha manual or existing available loops can be used
after every 12 feet length of pipe.

How long can CPVC systems be exposed to sunlight?

CPVC can easily withstand the ultraviolet exposure commonly experienced during the construction phase of a
project, provided on-site inventories are turned regularly as would be anticipated. If CPVC is used in above-
ground, outdoor applications, protection from ultraviolet attack can be achieved by shielding or by painting
the system with an exterior-grade latex paint.

Should special considerations be taken to connect CPVC to a hot water heater?

In some instances, yes. However, these considerations are based on concerns regarding external sources
of heat. The hot water from the heater will not affect the CPVC. When connecting to a gas water hear, CPVC
should not be located within 6” of the heater’s flue, if the flue has no insulation. A metal nipple or flexible
appliance connector should be used. This measure eliminates the potential for damage to plastic piping that
might result from excessive radiant heat from the flue. If the flue is insulated, the instructions of the flue
manufacturer should be followed.

At what distance do we need to clamp the pipes?

Horizontal or Vertical support / pipe clamping

Protection against household hot water storage geyser temperature safety mechanism
malfunctions
Some plumbing codes contain detailed requirements for connections to gas or electric storage type water
heaters. Determine whether your code has such requirements and satisfy them. CPVC can be piped to the
electric water heaters with special metal-to-CPVC transition
fittings (photo A). For wall mounted electrical geyser connection
CPVC Pipe
always keep the inlet valve open & use flexible plastic hose pipe
to connect geyser inlet to CPVC piping system. On gas water
heaters there should be atleast 6 inches of clearance between
Metal Pipe
the exhaust flue and any CPVC piping (photo B). Twelve inch
long metal nipple or appliance connector should be connected
directly to the heater so that the CPVC pipe is not damaged by
the build-up of excessive radiant heat from the flue.An approved
temperature/ pressure (T/P) relief valve should be installed so
that the probe or sensing element is in the water at the top of
the heater. CPVC is approved by all the model codes for use as relief valve drain line piping. Use a metal-to-
CPVC transition fitting to connect to the relief valve and continue the pipe full size to the outlet. For horizontal
runs. slope the pipe toward the outlet and support it at three-foot centers or closer. The pipe must discharge
to the atmosphere at an approved location. Do not use CPVC pipe and fittings with commercial-type,non-
storage water heaters.
